I have a TV tuner in my main PC. I use it to record lots of television shows and movies my son and I enjoy watching. I then archive the show/movie. This takes tons and tons of drive space. To satisfy that need, I have:
Internal 320GB WD SATA
Intennal 200GB WD SATA
Internal 120GB WD SATA
External 400GB WD USB
External 250GB WD USB
External 160GB ST USB
External 160GB ST USB
Find yourself and your son a productive hobby... there's nothing wrong in watching some TV but if you do something crafty together, I'm sure he'll remember it more fondly when he grows up. It's definitely better than him saying "me and my dad used to watch a lot of TV together..." someday.
I'm sorry if I offended you by telling you how to bring up your child, but think carefully about how your consumerist interests might affect a child who needs to be taught things like values and how to think. You can never teach a child those things too much.
How dare you presume to make assumptions on the lifestyle of my son and I from one CNET post:
1) We have lots of hobbies, only one of which is to record televisions shows we both enjoy.
2) What are these consumerist interests you allude to? My post mentions nothing on this issue.
3) Finally to make jugdements regarding "values and how to think" based on the comments I made was completely uncalled for.
GET A LIFE, MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND STOP MAKING MORAL JUDGEMENTS YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO MAKE.
Well I wasn't expecting the world to become a better place by giving you a suggestion... so I can't say I'm dissapointed in your reply.
If you're a father who values morals and thinking then one would expect you to find some merits in my thoughts on that subject rather than get worked up by them... so you be the judge.
Good grief man, calm down. you shouldn't presume that he's judging you entire life off one post either.
My main computer holds four hard drives whith three OP's ( Windows.XP.Pro, Windows XP x64. Pro. Windows Vista Ultimate) one drive left for auto-backup from all three drives. Also got a Metal Gear Box for external use trough five hard drives. All together: internal drive space:760GB. External drive space: close to 1TB. As a OEM I need space for client storage backups just in case and I offer that service for free. I take pride in servicing my costomers well.

It is not very much in today standard.
I think everyone here has it extremely lucky with their computers here compared to me. I've only gotten 15 Gigs of hard disk space on two hard drives, (one is 12 Gigs and the other is 3), and 128 Megs of RAM! I am running Windows XP also, which you are supposed to have at least 256 Megs of RAM to run, so I guess you can imagine how slow my computer is going right now, and not to talk about the very little space I have on my computer to store all of my favorite games and programs! I am hoping a lot to get a brand new computer at a store, or even at least upgrade my computer's RAM and buy a big, (space-wise), external hard drive. I've got a long way to go to catch up with today's modern technology. All of you guys are very lucky!
Props to brewster2005 for using a configuration like that for this long! You've demonstrated true technical endurance, my friend!
I wonder if there's a Guinness World Record for using the same PC configuration for the longest time period. I have a feeling that it's easier now than before since the speed improvements of components are mostly used as an ad hoc solution for user incompetence. Also PCs haven't been able to do anything newer, in recent times, to make old systems truly obsolete. People can still easily do real (non-fancy) personal computing work with a 10 year old PC, as long as the hardware is in working order.
1x 250GB HD
1x 300GB Personal Media drive (External HD)
I have 40 GB on the C drive, which I use mainly for the Operating System. Other than the OS, I try to keep only anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall and other essential programs on the C drive. I have everything else on the 100 gb E hard drive, including downloaded programs and programs in use. I have 4 gb virtual memeory (which may be a bit much, but it works for me), and a maximum of 2g RAM.
The dedicated OS drive seems to make it easier for the system to perform because it doesn't frag so bad and keeps more RAM free for processing. Since all other programs are on the E drive, they don't frag as badly either. I also use flash drives to store programs which I don't use very often and they're always right there when I need them. I am planning to store working personal, private programs on a newer, larger flash drive, maybe 4 - 8 gb, reason being, if the whole machine dies and I need to re-install Windows, my data will still be intact. All I need do is restore the program and current files.
I defrag and remove unneeded programs and files regularly.
I also have a program which does a secure erase on unneeded files rather than Windows just pushing around erased files for much needed space.
I set maintenance programs to run on a regular basis and sometimes I run them more often manually if needed.
Got to keep it clean. If the computer doesn't work, the daily grind becomes a lot more difficult and time consuming.
1.5 TB across 3 500GB SATA drives in RAID 0+1
Sorry to mention this, but these surveys are not only fun, they are useful! So it was really surprising to see that the survey then asked about storage on main computer only. Not so surprising was the fact that many respondents included NAS and External HDD in the total even though this will have skewed the results.
Come on cNet - a survey is a survey even if it is a quick poll. Either think about the questions more carefully and maybe include more than one "quick" question or scrap this part of the newsletter which is otherwise mostly great!
I have one 160GB hard drive, which is only a quarter full after a year's usage
Server: 80 GB boot drive for XP Pro; 5x 250 GB with 4 active in a RAID 5 array and 1 as hot spare.
PC#1: 250 GB with XP Home, 80 GB with Ubuntu, 160 with various data in NTFS volume.
PC#2: company laptop Lenovo T60 with 100 GB in XP Pro
PC#3: 40 GB boot drive for XP Pro
PC#4: 250 GB boot drive for XP MCE; additional 250 GB for video storage.
Altogether 1.25 TB on the server and another 1.1 TB or so scattered about the house.
This does not include my modded Xbox (160GB) or my modded Replay (200 GB).
