I know that there are a lot of folks that have just gone with the "free" handset and signed on for the x year contract. I also know I have paid for phones so that I would not have to be tied to a contract or because I wanted a smart phone, or other phone with special features.
I think the most I have paid was just around $200.00
With the iPhone at $600 that is a big stretch if I am looking just at cash outlay.
and that was pushing the limit.
no iphone for me
I can't imagine someone shelling out $500+ for a phone, especially without a replaceable battery. i've never had a phone battery last more than 2 years. So the iPod of the phone industry is gonna require you to buy a $500 phone every two years? Nuts!
at Kmart in 1999 (?).
I've only owned two cell phones ever.
The aforementioned purchase was a Qualcomm Sprint handset.
I currently rock a Sanyo SCP-4700 that I got for free in 2003.
Needless to say, I am in the market for a new cell phone. =)
325 dollars for the lg vx9800, it was that expensive cause i bought it without a verizon contract. It was so much money but such a great phone.
My first cell phone, 12 years ago. Not bad, but I was smarting over the monthly charges. $55/month for 30 anytime minutes, 60 night/weekend minutes or something like that. Nationwide coverage? Yeah, right. I step a toe out of my service area and I'm roaming, roaming, roaming at .40/minute.
Maybe I should have asked it that way. I realize a lot of folks get cell phones through work, and so they may not have paid for it, but it still cost someone a lot of money.
for a samsung e316 (several years ago)
~$670 (that was more than my rent (which is cheap in Houston, btw))! But that's what happens with a long-distance girlfriend and not enough minutes/text-messages in your plan... expensive lesson learned...
Best,
Shalin
The most that I payed was $300 for a krzr k1m and that was because I lost it but I really only payed $150 when I purchased it the first time with a new contract. I would never go out and spend $500 for a 4 Gig iphone with no edge connection and a battery that's a little better then expected. It also has Cingular which has bad coverage in my area. Cingular is loving the deal with Apple because one of the iphone's biggest features in the Web and to use it without being in a WiFi hotspot, you need the data plan $$$ for cingular! Also another feature is that readable voice mail; Cingular/At&t is loving this because it most likely will involve text messaging which is an extra cost. All around Cingular is loving this deal because they make money all around on top of the iphone price.
for my Treo 600 when it first came out. I can't remember exactly , as it was 4 years ago.
For my lousy Cingular 8525, December '06! At the time I needed a new phone and I really really wanted that particular phone 'cause it was the latest HTC phone in the US. I regret it now: not only does it have some problems that bother me, but now, 7 months later, its already outdated by the new T-mobile Wing and the forthcoming HTC Kaiser which are spring loaded and rockin' Windows Mobile 6.0. I need a new phone every year so from now on I'll be at "in" at the $200-$300 price point. iPhone for me? Not a chance.
