Should i delete IE?

by DSBtwins - 6/4/07 4:42 PM

I recently downloaded Firefox... if anyone thinks that was a seriously bad idea please tell me.

Anyways, I wanted to know if I should delete ever trace of IE from my computer or could that be hazardous or is there really no point. Thanks a lot!

...probably not

From the little knowledge I have on this subject, I don't think you should completely remove every trace of ie from your computer [presuming you have windows]
From my memory, I think doing so has side effects...the inconveniences of using windows...although I use windows myself, I am trying to learn to use linux.

No.

You can't delete IE because it is integrated into the Windows shell. I have heard of others who have deleted it, but it is a complicated process and full of risk.

In any case, you might still need IE for the odd Windows Update that you want to download manually instead of through the automatic Windows Updates, and also, some web sites still do not render properly in Firefox, and still require IE to be displayed properly.

I agree

Yes you are right Mark. I think you should just leave it and just continue using Firefox. Trying to uninstall them could cause you a trouble.

removing I.E.

by zucchim - 6/15/07 9:29 PM In reply to: Should i delete IE? by DSBtwins

make Firefox your defoult browser, but keep I.E. The only way to get windows updates (montly event) is trought the Microsoft website that only accept I.E.

Keep IE

by flashy0ne - 6/15/07 10:59 PM In reply to: Should i delete IE? by DSBtwins

Windows update is not the only site that requires IE. I have found that many financial sites require it also. Your choice for the default browser.

Should i delete IE?

by decobabe - 6/15/07 11:30 PM In reply to: Should i delete IE? by DSBtwins

No. There are places you want to go and things you need to do for which you will need the IE tab at least. My site hosts, for example, have some software within that still only work with IE. There are websites that will not load or will not load properly without it.

If you, like me, declare independence and junk it, you'll just have to go back and download it and install it again.

Firefox is very good, but because everyone doesn't plan for it, it continues to need occasional support of IE.

Firefox is better but...

by campbell2644 - 6/16/07 4:08 AM In reply to: Should i delete IE? by DSBtwins

Firefox is very much better and safer than IE but there is no need to delete IE as it takes up very little room .Others have correctly stated that its removal is more complicated than youˇd expect. Firefox has an add on that lets you view a page in IE if really necessary.Look under extensions for IE Tab

Not a good idea

by gt_alien - 6/16/07 5:32 AM In reply to: Should i delete IE? by DSBtwins

Leaving aside the fact that it IE is embedded into Windows and may cause rather disasterous happenings, it is always good to have more than one web browser. This is because if one browser happens to not work one day, you will be unable to access the Internet to download another one.

by killav - 6/16/07 5:48 AM In reply to: Not a good idea by gt_alien

trust me, thats thats the worst thing you can do. one day i got the stupids and deleted ie, when i went to restart the blue screen of death was there to greet me. thats when i discovered ie runs windows period, not just internet surfing. but luckily i keep my xp install disk handy just for such occasions.

Don't do it

by Themisive - 6/16/07 7:43 AM In reply to: deleting ie by killav

Believe me when I say that whilst many many say Firefox is superior, I stick with IE7, mainly because my ISP will stop a lot of viruses, and the firewalls I use (a hardware one on my router and a software one on my PC) as well as my anti-virus system deal with all the rest.

IE is next to impossible to remove from the O/S in any case, and even then, there is no guarantee the O/S will continue to function. As far as having 2 browsers on my PC is concerned, I keep a copy of the
Firefox installation programme to hand, so if the worst did come to the worst, and IE DID stop working, I could always install Firefox.

Keep the two browsers

by dont39350 - 6/16/07 11:17 AM In reply to: Should i delete IE? by DSBtwins

As everyone has previously stated, you will need to keep IE. Recently, having two browsers on my XP machine saved me a lot of grief. IE7 failed to open on my XP pc due to what I later discovered was a memory conflict with IE7 and a toolbar, but I was able to access the internet and obtain a solution by using my Firefox browser even though IE7 was rendered totally useless at the time. If you have a failure with your primary browser and you do not have an alternate browser, you will be dead in the water. I also run IE7 and Firefox on my Vista Ultimate laptop, but I am having issues with Firefox operating properly on many websites. The primary issue that I am having is how Firefox handles cookies on websites that require a membership login such as the Wall Street Journal website or my personal page on Yahoo. However, I feel like my issues are related to how Firefox is interacting with Norton Internet Security 2007 and the beta version of Webroot Spy Sweeper that I run on my Vista laptop. I do not have these issues when I use IE7 on my Vista Ultimate machine.

Leave IE as is

by Swartswaan - 6/16/07 12:30 PM In reply to: Should i delete IE? by DSBtwins

Hi Twins,
Installing Firefox was a seriously good idea. It has several seriously good security features built-in. Also it does not have the risk of the ActiveX backdoor. Some of IE's features are needed for other programs. Leave it as is and make Firefox the default. I also use Mozilla Thunderbird, brother to FF, for e-mail. Both open source and supported by Knowledge Bases and open forums for discussion/trouble shooting, Good community, you pay nothing for trouble shooting, advice, updates whatever. Plug-ins, extensions etc. galore! http://www.mozilla.org. Go.

Better not to

by saab 900 - 6/16/07 1:46 PM In reply to: Should i delete IE? by DSBtwins

No, I wouldn't delete IE. Some things can't be done in Firefox. Just one example that I know of - If you play Sims 1(some of us still do) you can't use anything but IE to upload or download houses/families. Firefox isn't acceptable. I'm sure there are other instances folk could quote you.
