Got It Today

by AncientNubee - 6/14/07 3:49 PM In reply to: Only because I'm a web developer by ekesqueaky

I've tried it twice today, and it's ok except for the eyestrain inducing fonts, the jerky scrolling, and the way it tends to hang on certain websites.

I'll keep it but I won't be using it until the final release.

Using it, Hating it

by Poodlez - 6/14/07 3:44 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Well, when I read in Cnet's newsletter that Apple had put out Safari for Windows, I didn't think twice to get it. I downloaded and installed it... and am hating it so far. I can't seem to browse for more than 5 minutes (it crashes) and Google looks absolutely HIDEOUS on it.

I really was expecting something more solid.

The Aqua look isn't worth it.

Apple Safari -- Not in my House!!!!

by Ron Geiken - 6/14/07 4:24 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I use Firefox about 95 to 98% of the time. I only use IE7 when actually required to view a site. Firefox 2 has all the features that I am familiar with and works just the way that I want it to. I also like all the Extensions and Themes available. Firefox 2 is the best browser that I have ever used, and I have been on the Internet since about 1994 starting with an early version of Netscape which for it's time was preferable to me over the IE from MS. I also use Thunderbird and that combination makes my Internet operation as smooth as I could want.

Also bookmarks are so much easier to set up and use vs. any other browser, there is no competition in my mind. I hate the bookmark features of IE7. I am using the Walnut Themes for both Firefox and Thunderbird, and like the looks of both. I have 13 total themes available, and have used all of them one time or another. I also have 33 extensions installed, and they all are in action at one time or another during my Internet use.

I can't even imagine using any other Browser full time.

Safari vs IE7 vs Firefox!!!!

by Ron Geiken - 6/14/07 4:47 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have read through quite a few postings on this site, and it seems obvious that the people who post to this site are more advanced computer users and seem to prefer Firefox to either of the other subject Browsers. Computer Neophytes might be content to use IE7, or perhaps Safari, but most more advanced computer users will finally opt for Firefox 2 and later versions after they have had the chance to use it. I have all the Bells and Whistles on my version of Firefox, and fortunately I have 2 gig of ram and ram usage is not particularly a problems for me. Right now I am using 1007 of 2048 meg of ram. Since you can get 2 gig of ram for about $100 right now, high memory usage shouldn't be a concern for someone with sufficient ram. I have also set up my computer to not use Swap files, so that speeds things up and my hard drive is hardly ever in action while I am using the Internet. Go for the extra ram, life is too short to get p*ssed off due to a rough running computer.

I'm an relatively advanced computer user...

by BlazeEagle - 6/15/07 9:43 PM In reply to: Safari vs IE7 vs Firefox!!!! by Ron Geiken

but I've tried Firefox for a good while now & still prefer IE. I doubt Safari offers anything I want or could use. I keep Firefox installed & twiddle around the 'Net on occasion.

Although, I might give Safari a spin when I buy my next PC, before I transfer everything to my new PC.

Would rather pour soup on my motherboard

Aside from stating that I dispise Mac's and all things Apple, I have a couple of pointed reasons as to why I won't ever touch Safari. First, I've used it on a mac and disliked it greatly. Now I could have been that the interface on the computer I was using (a generic iBook, or whatever they're called. They all look the same. Literally) was poorly designed, but I felt that using Safari was like trying to ride a housecat; it just simply is not designed to do what you need it to. Secondly, I base this opinion off my experiences with iTunes. I almost shudder to even say that name. The program itself has characteristics which are very similar to a virus. Its on half the software you go to install, and if it manages to sneak onto your computer, it embeds itself in every crevice it can find. I'm quite sure Safari would be the same way on a windows machine. I've seen an install for iTunes try to get the computer it was going on assign word documents to it for opening. I might be wrong about this, but I thought iTunes was a media program. I honestly expect Safari to want to open files meant for After Effects. My final reason as to why I don't run Safari is the same reason I don't run Firefox: I use a 64 bit computer. IE x64 v7 is the most stable option for me, and works perfectly well, without most of the security holes of its 32bit cousin.

Been There, Done That!

I tried it and Safari sucks. It's not faster than Firefox! On my computer it took longer to do simple tasks like opening a simple web page that Firefox can open in two seconds.Do not download this!!!

Yes, I'm checking it out

by cgramer - 6/14/07 7:52 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm giving Safari for Windows a try. After a few days' worth of use, about the only thing that really stands out about it is the font smoothing. It makes text easier to read. Other than that, I'll be sticking with Firefox and, on those occasions when designers are dumb enough to make sites that only work on one browser, Internet Explorer 7.

Safari

by Mr.Brilliant - 6/14/07 8:06 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I won't use it because I feel opera and firefox are much superior to safari and work better.

Great at first glance

by Mr_Hym - 6/15/07 1:27 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I downloaded the Safari browser thinking it might be a nice alternative to IE7 and Firefox, and for the first five minutes or so of using it, it seemed like it would be. Pages seemed to load a little faster, bookmarking was a snap, and I liked the privacy browsing feature. After that, it's flaws became abundantly clear. As far as I can tell, there is virtually no customization or plugin/addon options, a lot of Windows-based sites don't work to well (particularly Windows Live Mail, though I saw that coming). I understand that this is a beta, so I can't fault it too much, but if this is standard for a Mac application, I'm glad I bought a PC.

Tried It - Dumped It

by asegal - 6/15/07 2:43 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Strangely after installing Safari, a lot of my IE cookies vanished,
and a lot of my ZoneAlarm settings were missing.

It is supposed to import bookmarks the first time? Never got my
IE7 or FF bookmarks. Tried File->Import... it is looking for an
html file - won't import from folders.

I set up my PC so I can read it easily (dark blue title bar, with
white letters) -- Safari ignored that and I got gray title bar with
black letters -- contrast not good enough for me to see.

Safari seems to take a LONG time to bring up.

Safari also took over my whole screen. I like the taskbar on all the time, but Safari just convered it up.

It didn't seem faster than IE7 or FF.

No linux support, No go.

by superordenador - 6/15/07 6:41 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have used a windows for around 8 years, and have been CONSTANTLY disappointed with IE. However now I use firefox. Sure, it crashes every week, but at least i dont have to wait 12 years for it to reload the User interface (what you click, etc.)But apparently it can't be used for Linux, and as I am making the switch to Linux, I can't be bothered by Apple's weak attempts to tap into microsoft's monopoly. I won't be using windows for long, and won't even get a mac. I'll only get Linux.

It is OK, but no IE7

by dknapp - 6/15/07 7:40 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

First, it did not open new windows in tabs like I expected.
Second, it ignored the back button on my Logitech MX Laser mouse - very bad.
Third, the fonts seem blurry on all three font smoothing settings.

So, I do not dislike IE7, and Firefox is OK too. Safari may be OK, but I also did not see a way to import my IE or Firefox favorites. Another strike against it.

However, I also don't get too worked up over browsers either, so I have trouble relating to those folks who think one or the other are horrible or grand. They all have their good and bad points.

One thing

by CrowellD - 6/15/07 7:50 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

So far, the only thing I miss is a feature Firefox has. When you enter text into the address bar, it automatically goes to the "i'm feeling lucky" google result. I miss that. I have found nothing else yet that i miss from firefox.

No, I have no need...

by BlazeEagle - 6/15/07 9:29 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My current Windows XP system does everything I need & the way I like it. There's no need for me to fiddle with Safari.
