I actually don't mean that in any mean-spirited way. I'm just trying to write a proper thread title in the true spirit of Digg or a blogger. I love the show. I simply wanted to offer up my opinion as a long-time listener and I'm curious to see if I'm not alone on this.
Has anyone else (even you Cnet folks who have to cover it) grown a little weary of the seemingly endless coverage and rumors/speculation on a single product that's still a couple weeks from its launch? Cool as it might or might not be, it is just another gadget after all. I realize with the WWDC conference and another appearance from his holiness this week that the marketing and hype machine is cranking into overdrive. But this orgy of coverage has been going on since January and it seems like the volume is now getting overwhelming. I can't remember the last time I heard this much hype or media coverage for a tech launch. Vista, the Wii/PS3, Google's IPO. Those are some of the biggest in recent history that immediately spring to mind (and some of them far more important in the grander scale) yet they all seem to pale by comparison.
You guys are actually doing a pretty good job of covering this (it is 'buzz' after all.) And I share some of you skepticism about the product itself. All I ask is keep trying to keep the coverage at a reasonable volume. Please don't let it overshadow all the other tech news.
But I have absolutely no problem with it.
In fact, just because they mention iPhone in every episode: it's not dominating them. You're just being oversensitive because you're tired of the product. But what else could you expect from a phone that people have been hyping years before existence?

"pro-bono" or a natural reaction to the amazing teasing skillz that Apple has? hmm....
Apple is so good at the "tease"...partly because they repeatedly make amazing products and many wonder and *speculated* "what's next?" and also, just the way they market their product by advertising the *experience*...of which they mean to manage to a fair extent, IMO...
ya know?

I think Apple's 'amazing teasing skills' are as much a function of a rabid, core fanbase that WANTS to be teased and actually becomes part of the teasing process itself by constantly seeking out and wildly promoting the tiniest hint of information or rumor. The quality (or potential quality) of the product seems to be largely irrelevant. It's the culture and identity with the brand's style that seems to matter most.
This is all well and good for Apple. They've definitely got a great brand identity. All I'm saying is I hope the show doesn't fall prey to the hype machine by spending a lot of time covering every little rumor and detail. Keep it in the proper perspective and don't shortchange the rest of the news.
Seriously guys, when has Apple not had the whole rumour/hype thing going? It's been like this for years, they're probably the only tech company that's really managed to do that. And the iPhone is very innovative, its the first phone that i've looked at and thought wow, i have to get one of those. And even with all the stuff that they didn't do, it's still a lot in one product.
Also, in TMV's defense, they have been sympathetic to those who are tired of the iPhone news.

The iPhone is having the most amount of rumours, it is one of the very few tech items being covered in the mainstreet press, Apple is a good company with a cult following.
Much of the iPhone coverage is very much like the Paris coverage. Really nothing new, just a new wrinkle here and there, Vapid is the word I use most often.
Then again what else would we expect? This is technology news not real important news. Nothing about the iPhone will increase the likelyhood of world peace or reduce US poverty.
Read page 6 or TMZand you see the same type of stuff. Frankly I love it but never take it seriously.
and BOL is in sympathetic resonance.
Can you wait for every tidbit to be confirmed/dissected before reporting it? Sometimes you get the scoop and sometimes you fall into the "Engadget syndrome."
Also, how many entities are more fun to make fun of; Microsoft, Sony, MPAA, RIAA, US Government? OK, there's quite a few, but the more the merrier!
I thought Veronica was doing a daily iPhone news segment anyhow. The bulk of the stories and interested parties should go there (guess it's not me 'caus I don't even know if her segment aired yet - sorry VB.)
The iPhone has gotten way too much air time as of late on BOL. But in BOL's defense the hype is inescapable.
I couldn't agree with you more. How about a separate 5 min. podcast on the iPhone?
It's been kind of obvious in the past, but thanks for the acknowledgment in today's show that you guys are also getting a bit weary of the subject. And also thanks for the advice to skip ahead. I wasn't going to at first, but I actually did. ![]()
Like I said, I know you guys can't not cover it. It is news/buzz after all. I just like listening to your show for the diversity of topics covered. It's a great sampler for all things tech and I like hearing about a lot of stuff - even if some of it is occasionally off the wall stuff.
Keep up the good work.
It's a valid point that the iPhone is in every podcast. It's what's making the news. The #1 theme is DRM but that's in the news consistantly. Meanwhile as a short time listener I've watched the PS3 come and go, the Wii come and go. Several Trade shows come and go. The iPhone will also come and go. Google, Microsoft, Apple etc. are persistant but the product and ideas from each also come and go.
Apple is pretty good at the hype machine. Anyway Buzz responds to the market as it responds to what's going on.
One last thought. It's not so much that the iPhone overshadows other tech news as there are only so many news spots out there and the iPhone has replaced whatever else would be making the news if the iPhone wasn't there. But the same can be said for whatever the flavor of the moment is.
I told my wife the other day that the iPhone will be released on the 29th June. Her response was...
Huh?
David
Well it is isn't it? I mean just as Harry Potter fans are counting down they days till the release (34) and are analyzing and reanalyzing all the information they have about the new book...Even the security is similar!
It's funny, i'm sure many of us would laugh at the idea of counting the days to a book release. Is it that different from counting down the days to a phone release? (Granted the iPhone is "more than a phone".)
