Why don't they make MP3 players with removable storage?

by pthiringer - 6/12/07 9:30 PM

Ok, somebody help me out here. When you buy a digital camera, they don't sell 2 MB, 4 MB, or 8 MB cameras. You buy a camera for it's features, then separately buy as much or as little storage as you need. It's the same with virtually every other piece of electronic equipment, except for MP3 players. Whenever you run out of storage and want more, you need to throw the baby out with the bath water and buy a new player.

Why not have an inexpensive but feature-rich player that comes with no memory and a micro SD slot? You could expand its capacity as much as you want, split your music acrosss multiple SD cards, even share one player among multiple family members. Why don't they make something like this?

Newegg.com and geeks.com. The second place is discount so stuff comes and goes. You are unlikely to find such at retail outlets.

My nephew has a Sansa with a xSD slot and I personally have a, not feature rich unit, that cost about $10 with an SD slot. So, it's out there.

Cowon D2, Sandisk E2xx

Cowon D2 is my favorite player, and it has an SD slot (that supports SDHC). I also have a Sandisk e240 with a miniSD (or is it micro? can't remember) slot.

And as the first reply pointed out, there are plenty of cheap players with removeable storage. Just keep looking.

They don't make mp3 players with the specifications you are talking about for primarily one reason:

Not enough expandable memory. Though exapandable memory is a great EXTRA fature to have on any player, if you JUST have the expandable memory without any internal memory, then you are limited to having JUST 2 GB (with microSD) on your mp3 player. That being said, if the mp3 player is loaded with features, I doubt that you will ever get to enjoy any of them since your mp3 player won't be able to accomodate most of your content. Even if the player were SD card compatible, you are still limited to 4 GB. For a feature loaded player, you'd need at least 30 GB to fully enjoy its features.

If you need an example, check out what happened to the PSP. In fact, this dilemma is a reason why the iPhone is coming with internal memory.

They do.

There are so many players with removable memory/storage. There the Cowon D2, Creative Zen Vision(:W), SanDisk Sansa e200(R), iRiver X20, and many more. If you're looking for one that completely relies on removable storage for memory, there's only one I know - the HandHeld Entertainment company's Zvue 260. It's $99.99, and comes with a 512 MB SD memory card. It is a bit bigger than the Apple iPdod, but it's not as thick and lighter. It has a 2.5 inch screen. It can only accept cards of up to 4 gb of momory, even for such a big player. For more info, go to http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9676985-1.html?tag=blog.1 . You can also go to zvue.com .

Another player

Off the top of my head, I can think of one other player that relies soley on removable memory. The SanDisk Shaker. The pink and blue wonders come with a 512 mb SD card and are targeted mainly for the kiddie population. They're kind of cute.
