You needed another category

by JimEdwards - 6/14/07 6:01 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

That being "Just not interested." For what I need, IE works fine. There is no reason for me to switch browsers. I have yet to understand why the tech media goes gaga every time Steve Jobs passes gas.

Safari

by danm_50 - 6/14/07 6:02 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have tried it and have found a couple of 'bugs' and one thing that I don't like that may not be a bug. It won't let me save multiple homepages which is a feature I use on all my other tabbed browsers. I really like the way it renders most pages and it is a bit faster than some I think. I also like Netscape navigator, Netscape 8, and Opera but generally use Firefox However I think I may be using Netscape Navigator more and more and will certainly be keeping up with the new releases of Safari for Windows. Really wish programs that open browsers didn't usually insist on opening IE because that is the only time I ever use it.
I know someone who is a dedicated Apple person and they used to use Safari but now prefer Firefox over Safari so Apple probably has some work to do on both platforms.

Just OK

by mlcgruhlke - 6/14/07 6:03 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I tried out Apple's new web browser Safari on my PC for about one week. I normally use Firefox and a bit of Explorer. Safari isn't as fast as Steve Jobs says it is, while a bit faster than Explorer, Firefox wins this contest hands down. If you're looking to move to an Apple product for web browsing, don't....stick with Firefox.

Visually appealing and quite fast, but buggy

by wclark2048 - 6/14/07 6:10 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've taken it out for a spin; generally quite speedy in comparison to IE (and even Firefox), and the visual style is appealing. I've found few compatibility issues with Javascript and DOM code. However, I've had several freezes (all available CPU consumed by Safari), so it's not ready for prime time.

Love the Speed Bookmark Handling Still Sucks

by gkendrick - 6/14/07 7:00 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

For those who would never try Apple products you are missing out on wonderful stress free computing. That said Safari's new Beta release is great with speed and fairly stable but unlike Firefox or Opera does a horrible job, just like the old Safari, in handling Bookmarks. Firefox, to date, has set the standard for bookmark handling and this feature alone or lack of it in the new Safari, will mean that Firefox continues to be my Browser of choice and primary Browser. With the Bookmark feature addressed and improved though Safari could easily become my new browser of choice be it on Apple platforms or Windows.

I suppose the right option is "I've tried using it."

by Ben Feldman - 6/14/07 7:00 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Okay, I'm not an Apple hater. I'm moreso a Windows hater, so I use Linux 95% of the time with Windows on a separate partition for those "programs you can't live without," AKA Adobe CS3.

Anyway, the second I heard Steve Jobs announce that Safari would be available for Windows I went straight to the download page on Apple.com and downloaded it.

Suffice to say, it's not up to par. It's extremely slow, even though according to Apple it's 2x faster than IE7 and 1.5 or 1.6x faster than Firefox 2. It's not even close to being nearly as fast as even IE7!

It crashed way too often, even when I was doing something like checking CNN.com or checking my Gmail.

Plus, it's a serious memory hog. I saw one person's screenshot of his Task Manager with Firefox and Safari open with the same websites. Safari was using like 10 times more memory. I've had the same experience -- and people call Firefox a memory hog! :p

Then again, it IS a beta. I'd call it an alpha, though.

I have a Mac as well... and Safari doesn't exactly give the best experience on its native system either...

Plus, do Windows users need another choice when it comes to browsing? IE7, Firefox, Opera, and now Safari? Even Microsoft realized its attempt to put its official browser on Macs was a failure.

Poser webrowser...

by Kutusov - 6/14/07 7:21 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

For some reason only Freud would have known, I’m always eager for a chance to move away from Firefox. This browser is far better than any other around and it does everything better, faster and in a more reliable way than IE or Opera. When I heard of Safari I had to try it! Apple software? It must be very good! Alas…. It’s crap! I don’t even know about other issues posted on this forum… I have the advanced search google page as my home page (yes, its silly, I know…). It just takes a single tap on the keyboard for Safari to crash! For God sakes, I know it’s a Beta, but what on earth is this!? If I wanted to use a faulty product like this one, I would be buying one of those old Alfa Romeus! What a joy, to have a car always stuck in the garage! But now… Behold!! I have a cool looking browser on my desktop…. And that is the only thing it does… just stays there, looking cool…

Already tried it and already uninstalled it...

by whizkid454 - 6/14/07 7:44 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

So much for the "Safari is 2 times faster than IE7 comment." It took me 5 extra seconds to open a web page in Safari than it did in IE7! The interface is horrible. Would never use it again, unless Apple fixes it up. Also, Apple's got a long road ahead of them to protect this thing. They're so used to a safe and secure OS that now since this thing is on Windows, they might not be ready to protect it like IE "sort of" is. I have already spotted 6 vulnerabilities on a CNET report yesterday so I don't feel compelled to use it right now.

With all these Mac apps coming to Windows, eventually, this will lead to Mac OS X "wild cat's name" on Windows...

Im ashamed of it but....

by say592 - 6/14/07 7:55 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I am on the saffari browser right now. I like it. I hate Macs. I hate apple. Im terribly ashamed of it, but I like the browser.

It does load faster. It loads sites that I had ads blocked on firefox, FASTER than it does on firefox. This is with ads!

I to write websites like several others. Mine are in PHP though. Not that big of a deal for cross compatability.

In the end, I will use the browser. I will follow it and see how it turns out. I miss my adblock. I dont like the fact that on certain pages it locks up solid. BUT its in beta. It will get better. Its fast. Thats whats important to me and many others. Give it a try, no matter how loyale you are to your browser. You can always go back.

PS:
I have been experiencing issues on the alltel site. It may be the computer Im on, its pretty old (im waiting on a new mobo for my other computer).

Did and done.

by ranron - 6/14/07 8:06 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Let's drop the OSX vs. Windows thing for a second.

Macs are good. They look nice and are indeed stable. Their applications are built for the OS, so everything is integrated well.

Now Safari is a nice browser, but this is the Windows world we are talking about and Apple and Microsoft don't work well together. I wouldn't use iTunes if I didn't make the mistake of buying a couple hundred songs on proprietary software.

So this browser is tried and done. Back Firefox.

Safari is a simple and elegant browser that works great

by michaelcvoigt - 6/14/07 8:12 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

A lot of people will enjoy this browser's lightweight elegant usage. The speed that it renders pages is very apparent, it is much faster then Firefox.

A lot of people will forget it is BETA before bashing it.

Apple haters will hate it, so continue with IE.

open source all the way

by shadzofsilver - 6/14/07 8:52 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I use Firefox. It's by far the best browser I've ever used. I'm a big fan of open source, so why would I use a corporate browser? Many people will say "HAY BUT APPLE ISN'T MICROSOFT LOL", but Apple, like Microsoft, is a corporation. I just like the idea of a free (free as in freedom, and free in the monetary sense) piece of software.

I tried it, and it stunk

by TrackStar1682 - 6/14/07 9:06 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

It ran OK, but the features and options were totally barebones! I couldn't add new search providers at all, and the back button on my mouse was functionless, just to start. I know mac users who even prefer Firefox, so I'm not surprised that I do either.

It sucks

by raveesh1243 - 6/14/07 9:32 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

first of all it works slower then IE on my vista 64-bit
secondly even though the browser looks great the sites take a hell of a time to load and quite frankly the sites too are sometimes not displayed properly,
event the FF3 alpha is better than it

i am sticking to FF!
