Newbie Forums For Windows 2000

by artistjoh - 6/13/07 10:06 AM

I am a long time Mac OS X user and have no problems there. I also have an old Hewlett Packard Vectra with Windows 2000 Professional installed. Every time I try to do something on it I can never get things to work. This is my inexperience rather than a problem within the machine itself.

Can anyone recommend a good forum for newbies so I can troubleshoot my latest problem - installing - uninstalling a Sony Ericsson program so I can do an update on my Sony Ericsson phone? I find the book I have (Windows 2000 Professional for dummies) leaves out lots of the basic details when explaining these things.

I see this forum is far more advanced than is appropriate for my problem but I don't knnow where best to ask questions.

Any suggestions?

Tony

"installing - uninstalling a Sony Ericsson program so I can do an update on my Sony Ericsson phone?"

That's not enough detail for me to offer any possible fixes. In general we only need to install software, run it and then uninstall if we want. Nothing special is required.

If you had shared the error as well as told about the "program" I might comment. But a common issue today is that some software is showing up that is for XP and Vista (only.) For that issue the cure is to use a XP or Vista machine.

Sorry

The errors are complex and not the fault of the software but my fault I successfully installed Flash player but it was totally automatic.

The software is a download from the Sony Ericsson web site. The Sony software said the it is for Windows 2000 as well as XP, but needed the flash player. So far so good.

When I downloaded the .exe file it asked where to install it. I couldn't see anything that looked like an applications folder so I just selected desktop. It appeared to install successfully but 2 icons appeared on the desktop, one called "set up...." Which is what the software is supposed to do so I presume that was the program name itself.

The other icon appeared to be an alias to that software so I clicked it. It gave me a pop up window that said that program was already in use. when I shut the pop up a Sony Ericsson window opened which announced that it was going to check the internet for the latest settings so I clicked continue and within a few seconds I was clicking agree to the software licence, and all appeared to be working.

About 30 seconds later I get a pop up window that said errors had developed and it could not download settings and had the suggestion that I should download another copy of the application.

When I tried to do that I got a pop up window saying it could not install because the other version has to be uninstalled first.

You think installing on the desktop was my big mistake? Nope it was what I did next. I asked a guy if he knew how to uninstall programs. It didn't take long to discover he is a "click the nearestr option and hope for the best" type of guy. He appeared not to know what he was doing really. He uninstalled first by going to "add/uinstall program" he couldn't find the program that way so he highlighted the icon and clicked delete. The icons did disappear. He told me it was fine and left me to it. and told me to install the new copy to "c drive"

So I tried to download from the Sony Ericsson web site again, navigated to c drive and found a program files folder. It downloaded there but when I tried to install it I get a pop up window that says that it can't install as the program is already installed. When I close that window there is another one underneath it that says "Installation Aborted"

So now I appear to have a program that I can't find and a program I need to install. It is dumb newbie stuff I know and I don't know where to start for trouble shooting. I have a Windows 2000 for dummies book but it doesn't seem to help much.

Let's see what you shared.

"The errors are complex and not the fault of the software but my fault I successfully installed Flash player but it was totally automatic."

So far nothing to fix..

"The software is a download from the Sony Ericsson web site. The Sony software said the it is for Windows 2000 as well as XP, but needed the flash player. So far so good.

Actually no download from a web browser asks "where to install". It may ask where we want it to land. This is not an issue to fix.

"The other icon appeared to be an alias to that software so I clicked it. It gave me a pop up window that said that program was already in use. when I shut the pop up a Sony Ericsson window opened which announced that it was going to check the internet for the latest settings so I clicked continue and within a few seconds I was clicking agree to the software licence, and all appeared to be working."

Aha, I've seen that and that happens if we click a few too many times and launch it twice. But there is nothing to fix here.

"About 30 seconds later I get a pop up window that said errors had developed and it could not download settings and had the suggestion that I should download another copy of the application."

RIGHT THERE!!! That first error message in a quoted format ie. "error message" is what everyone will ask for.

"When I tried to do that I got a pop up window saying it could not install because the other version has to be uninstalled first.

When this happens you need to find the software's support page to ask HOW DO I MANUALLY UNINSTALL YOUR SOFTWARE?

There is NO GENERIC or BEGINNER INSTRUCTIONS on this one. But you can try a freebie called ADD REMOVE PRO (see google.com)

Sorry to read about your troubles but I can't help much since you are leaving out the good parts and disregarding the forum note (words in red.)

You can try our Newbies Forum but they'll likely ask some of the same questions.

Hewlett Packard Vectria Model DTPC-17
Windows 2000 Professional

I do not know what else I can give you to satisfy the forum note in red.

I do not know what the "good bits" are to include. The only thing I have ever done on a Windows computer before today is browse a couple of web pages so this is all new territory for me, so please be patient and inform me exactly what "good bits" you need.

The Sony Ericsson site has no support information for uninstalling their software, nor anything on how to install it beyond saying click on the icon and follow instructions. I will try phoning them when they are open tomorrow.

Meanwhile I found your Newbie forum so will ask for help there.

Be sure to try ADD REMOVE PRO

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 6/13/07 2:00 PM In reply to: Sorry Bob, I am trying here by artistjoh

Links to that fine tool are easy to find with google.com

Read http://www.pcnet-online.com/discus/messages/449/5053.html?1173691686 to see a discussion about it's use when your add/remove control panel or the software does not have a remove feature.

Add-Remove Pro

by artistjoh - 6/13/07 2:57 PM In reply to: Be sure to try ADD REMOVE PRO by R. Proffitt Moderator

Bob I installed that program Add Remove Pro without problem. It has a list of programs that can be uninstalled. The Sony Ericsson Program that is the problem is not on that list. I tried the "refresh list" button and the Sony Ericsson program still does not appear.

Yet I can see the icon for it in the Program files folder. Likewise when I go to the control panel and click on the add/remove programs icon there the Sony Ericsson program does not appear.

Yet downloading a new version gives an error message that it cannot install because it is already installed. I do not know where to go from here.

Then it's a manual remove job.

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 6/13/07 3:28 PM In reply to: Add-Remove Pro by artistjoh

It's the old search and delete method. If the .exe is found for that program we delete it. Same for it's shortcut, etc.

There is no step by step. Sorry.

Thank you

Well, I did manage to hunt down all files for the Update Service and then the fresh version installed. I placed it in the Program Files folder for lack of knowledge of where better to put it.

The software seems to be flaky. It crashed the computer once and just hung a second time, but the third time it actually worked.

Meanwhile I am reading that Windows 2000 for Dummies book from cover to cover trying to familiarize myself with this alien Windows world :-)

Again thank you for walking me through this.
