Never say never!

by jmcanty - 6/13/07 11:00 PM In reply to: Never going to happen! Apple = bad. by DonutGuy

There is an old saying "don't knock it until you try it" I recent transition from windows PC to a Mac-Mini and I am very please. The OS 10.4 system is very intelligent and there is a lot of Mac software available, and much better than some of the windows SW. The system is hassle free and with the Parallels Desktop for Mac software, I can run windows on my Mac, the best of both worlds.

Already tried it - eh...

I don't have too much of a quibble with Safari on the Mac. I use it fairly often there, although I use Firefox also. On Windows I use Firefox almost exclusively.

I *do* have problems with the Windows version. I'm not distressed that it crashes, hangs, gets REALLY SLOW, and uses way too much RAM. It is, after all, a beta.

My problem is with the choices that Apple has made for this browser:
1) They don't use ClearType, but their own font smoothing technology, so their fonts look icky and give me a headache. Yes, yes, I know that they are closer in fidelity to the design of the font. I really don't care! They hurt my head. I would buy the "closer fidelity to the font when printed" argument if this was presentation/design software. Its a web browser, and an LCD is not equivalent to a printer.

2) They completely ignore the look and feel of the Windows system that they're on. Yuck! When I run Linux, I like things to look like Linux. When I run Windows, I like things to look like Windows. When I run on the Mac, I like things to look like the Mac. Apple is horrible at following guidelines for platforms.

Frankly, the look and feel problem exists with iTunes too. I really despise that software on a PC. Its fine on the Mac. On the PC it's bloatware and sticks out like a sore thumb. I wish it wasn't *required* to use an iPhone.

My solution for the Mac fonts when I run a Mac is to increase my font sizes in my applications to the point where the fuzziness is not a problem. On my Windows box, I run with smaller fonts, and they are still legible, and don't give me a headache. I don't want to lose the benefit of my 1600x1200 LCD by increasing the font sizes. I *like* that I can cram a ton of stuff on a screen and don't want to change, just for a browser.

Still, it's nice to see what pages look like on a Mac without actually running a Mac though. :)

Hell no.

From the votes, I can see that people are fairly equally divided over this issue.

I, for one, am never touching Safari. I had enough of it from using at school, why the hell would I want to use this "crap-ware" at home? It offers no advantages to Firefox or Internet Explorer 7, maybe except to satisfy Apple fanboys.

Maybe another one of the Apple's marketing tactics to draw Windows users to Mac fold?

I don't do Windows...

by Bronzit - 6/13/07 11:12 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

... except as a career of maintaining them on networks, & since W3.1. I have never owned a PC & have no incentive to buy one (Mac owner since 3/6/84). Safari isn't the fastest but it works well. I will try it sometime on Windows. On sites which insist on MS non-standards for HTML it still does fairly well for me, as I have it set up.

When Safari for Windoz (oops) gets out of beta, it'll do fine, even though it's an uphill battle against non-standard HTML sites.

when there is something to test it out, I'll do that...

by anton.vanwamelen - 6/14/07 12:08 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

yes, we have tried both versions, the one without (cause we already having IT & QT) and all in package.

Both failed miserably, maybe we are running 64 vista and apparently that's too much for ladeedah safari...

maybe next time if all bugs are ironed out...

I did downloaded it

by monk980 - 6/14/07 1:07 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

And it is a lot faster than IE, however, I didn't like it since I cannot keep the Favorites tab open and browse from there like IE or Firefox, everytime I switch to another website I have to close the one I am using and click on the screen to go to another site....in that sense it sucks, also I cannot organize the websites the way I want bit it will automatically sort them in alphabetical order...

So after 15 minutes my downloaded Safari ended up in the Trash folder....

Safari - excellent

by BMellars - 6/14/07 1:08 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I hate Macs but have to admit that the new Safari browser seems excellent. It is very quick and knocks spots off IE. I have been using Firefox for some time but now find it has become slow and somewhat bloated so I will be using Safari now

More choice that's surely not needed

by maxpsycho - 6/14/07 1:55 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I see a lot of people putting down IE but frankly its the market norm in browsers and with new security features is pretty much all you need for your web-browsing needs. And furthermore, if you do want a more secure and more plug-in(able) browser, then you have firefox. I personally use Opera, because of the minimalist look and torrent support. So why in the name of God, would you need another browser?! They're just that - browsers!!

safari for windows

by rhoda58 - 6/14/07 2:03 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

thank god i can put safari on my toshiba laptop. when we finally decided to enter the computing world, we bought the new intel imac desktop.i did alot of reading about computers for a few years prior to taking the leap to buy one. we also bought a toshiba laptop on the same day from a big box store as the salesman said to wait until the macbooks come out with the intel chips. big mistake. i should have waited. right out of the box on first start-up the toshiba had an error message and said there was either an software or hardware problem.so everytime i boot up it has to try 2 or 3 times before it goes into windows. the first thing they said to me when i brought it to the store i bought it from, was i didn't shut it down properly.what crap. so they took it and said to check back in a week. when i got it back they said nothing was wrong with it. so to this day i have to let it gyrate 2 or 3 times to get into windows. then it works fine except for the other mysterious error messages that i ignore.
so, i just bought my niece, who just graduated from high school and is starting college in the fall and myself,2 new macbooks. the black ones. i have to start her on the right path, and i just couldn't buy her anything else. . she just loves it and her college supports apple too. i was worried about that, but alot of students are starting to use apple computers.plus apple gives student discounts and has always been in the schools.i just love our macs!!!!

i will say that i'm kinda glad i have this toshiba tho.because now i know what people are talking about the pros and cons of mac vs windows. plus i like windows media player and other apps.

Tried Safari, not useable

by moxiegm - 6/14/07 2:36 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Since I have a love hate relationship with IE7, I figured why not try the Safari beta. Hugely disappointed because I am unable to view any text or menus. I can mouse over areas and see that there is an active menu location but only gray boxes. I tried running repair with the windows installer, I downloaded a second time with the same results. I have an HP m760y media center 3.2 ghz dual core, Windows media edition, 4gb ram, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS video. So for me, I can't use it for the time being...

Safari For Windows - Firefox Is Better

by markerichannelly - 6/14/07 4:49 AM In reply to: Tried Safari, not useable by moxiegm

I have been using Firefox since version 1 and I have no plans to change.
This release of Safari just shows how great Firefox is. In safari when you are downloading something and you exit safari, your download goes with it. Its download manager is so stupid. In Firefox when you do the same thing, it keeps the download manager open. Firefox also has the ability to pause downloads. And with the MacFox 2 Theme that makes Firefox look like Safari, you get the best of both worlds, both usability and visual styling. Long live Firefox!

Safari for Windows

I might try it....

by OttifantSir - 6/14/07 2:57 AM In reply to: Poll: Will you be trying Apple's Safari for Windows? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

As the title says: I might try it. What's holding me back? I use Opera 9.21
As far as security and adherence to standards go, this is the best. And that's not my subjective opinion. I've checked it out on the Web. The security is a very easy check. A widget called Stay Secure shows how many security holes SECUNIA has found in IE, FireFox, Opera, Safari and Konqueror.

Adherence to standards is a bit trickier to check, but the last time I checked, IE had 95%(+some decimals), Firefox 96%(+decimals) and Opera had 98%(+decimals) adherence to standards. I didn't bother at the time to check Safari and Konqueror or all the other browsers, as I didn't have need to.

I might check out Safari, but I don't think I will do it with the beta. I simply don't know enough about how it works to be helpful. I know there are several things called plug-ins, CSS, ssh, cookies, XML and so on and so forth, and I pretty much know what they are good for. I just don't know, when the browser does something wrong, or doesn't do anything, what is wrong with it. I know where to find the answer, from someone more knowledgeable, within minutes. But I can't do it myself.

Besides, as I have said, I have the safest and most standards-compliant browser already, and it is by far the best "change-to-YOUR-preferences" browser I have used. (And I have tried Netscape's browsers, IE in several flavors, Firefox in several flavors, several *nix browsers and Opera since the early 90's)

So, the only reason I will be downloading Safari for PC, would be to see if it is better than Opera.

I'm not exactly an Apple fan

by mauro_vos - 6/14/07 3:10 AM In reply to: I might try it.... by OttifantSir

There is really only one reason why I'm not even thinking zbout trying Safari. It's because I hate the looks of it. I'm using for example Firefox right now, with a skin that fits me and my desktop theme (Alien GUI Darkstar). I'm shure Safari has a lot of functionality, just like software like Itunes, but that is not what would me make actually use the program.
