Safari for Windows

by RugbyGod - 6/12/07 1:27 PM

Not sure whether this has been posted before, but here is what I think of Safari for Windows.

From what I read yesterday, Apple will be allowing developers to make applications for iPhone via web application using Safari. In order for iPhone applications to be developed widely, Apple need to get Safari accessible to many developers as possible whether the developers are using Mac OS X or Windows. I think this is the only reason for Apple to release Safari for Windows. I don't think that Apple is entering in the browser war with Firefox (and/or IE) with Safari for Windows.

What do you think?

Safari for Windows iPhone developer

by ClioH - 6/12/07 4:59 PM In reply to: Safari for Windows by RugbyGod

Here's my take on it...

Let's say that I'm a web app developer working on a super cool site for mobile devices on Windows. How can I ensure the app will absolutely work properly on iPhone? If there is no Safari is available, I would have to buy a Mac. This might not sound like too big of a cost for a company but if I'm just an individual developing the web app for fun, that Mac would be a bigger cost. By releasing Safari for Windows, anybody that have a computer can develop their own web app for the iPhone without any additional computer resource cost.

Just for the record, I own an iMac and no Windows machine.

Browser standards.

Why shouldn't you be able to use your Windows machine and Firefox 2, or IE 7? I think it is abhorrent to suggest that you require Safari to ensure everything is working properly. Indeed, it fails the entire premise of the internet, that is to say, no specific hardware (or in this case: software) is required to access any and all of the content.

Ideally

But every browser has it's quirks, developers test on the ones they work it to work on.

Why would I switch?

As a PC user who loves Firefox is there any reason I would prefer Safari? Can we see a Prize Fight between Firefox & Safari?

Not about switching - IMO

Prize fight might be cool. I bet Firefox will come out on the top. But, I think Apple only release it to the developers with Windows PC who wants to make programs for iPhone. I don't see any other reason for Safari PC version.

Just for the full disclosure, I am a macbook owner (running Mac OS X, Ubuntu via BootCamp, Windows XP via Parallels) who uses Firefox as the main browser.
