OK... I have an ancient 27" tv in my bedroom. It is horrible. Sooooo... I want to buy a new one. The room is nice size -- if I am sitting on the bed I am maybe 10 feet from the tv -- laying down 15 feet. This tv IS the main viewing tv. I have a 65" Hitachi projection tv in the livingroom -- the monster has not been turned on in months.
I was thinking plasma -- the Panasonic 42PX600U or the 42PX77U. They fit nicely in the budget. But I play alot of video games as well via xbox 360, so I wonder if maybe an LCD would not be a better choice -- (Sharp Aquos???) I would prefer to spend in the $1500 range. And I have certainly found each of the tv's I listed below that. BUT are they a good choice? Considering there is a good deal of movie watching(I have a dvd player but just use the 360), game playing(and I will eventually add the PS3 to the line up), sports, and network tv -- what is the best all around technology? LCD? Plasma? DLP? I am dazed and confused from looking online, at Best Buy, etc etc -- and honestly, I haven't a clue. So PLEEEAAAASSSEEE help. I would drop up to $2000 if it makes THAT big of a difference -- though I found the 42PX77U for under $1400 delivered. Hmmmm... is 37-42" even the right size for the room?
The angle of viewing is dead on straight and most viewing and gaming is done in the evening. not a whole lot of light with the blinds closed.
Its what you feed it "O' vidio games and the d.v.d. are nice but to truly enjoy your movie quality t.v. You Must set up a hi-def cable or satellite system its a must once you order the hi-def package you will have programming thats beyond belief and a true 1080I picture once you check out Planet earth on discovery h.d. theater you will be in hi-def heaven also all the other hi-def channels with the hi-def package will give you the most awsome programs yopu have ever seen to me the sat system is just as important as the t.v good luck steweeee
I have the HDTV package from comcast already. The livingroom tv is Hi def. I also have a JBL cinemapro surround sound system. I personally watch very little tv. Mainly dvd's -- and most of my tv exposure is when playing games. When considering the gaming... and the movies... and the gf's desire to watch network tv -- what IS the best all around, general purpose technology?

If you’re wondering what is best for you considering size of the room and viewing distance then perhaps you should take one of CNET's free online courses. If you go to Tips and Tricks, look left hand side and up it will say online courses; click home entertainment. Scroll down to HDTV 101, this class has already started but you can just read the assignments to get the info you need. Hope this helps.
We have a Panasonic 50" 50PX60U, which is very similar to the 42PX600U you mentioned, and we couldn't be happier. It is the previous generation model, with the silver trim (which doesn't bother us), and it's selling for under $1500 online in various places.
Good luck with your search.
You have a lot of questions. Maybe this will help...
SCREEN SIZING
At 10 feet away, I think a 37" would be fine, but at 15 feet away a 50" screen is preferred. I have written a blog regarding proper sizing. It also gives an idea when 1080p is worthwhile. There are many sizes & viewing distances where you can't tell the difference between 1080p and 720p. You can check out my blog below, which include a nice handy recommendation chart:

BEST OVERALL TV TYPE
You mention the use of video games, which can involve quick motion. Also, you are in a room that can keep light low. If you are considering a 50" display, you may want to lean toward a plasma. It does not have the quick motion blurring that can be seen with LCDs. The plasma has great blacks and colors, and works well in a low light room. Sounds like a match.
Now, you also mentioned that the angle of viewing is dead on straight. If you don't mind a little depth (10" to 16"), then a projection television (microdisplay) may not be a bad choice. You'll get a lot more screen for the buck. The major issue with these projections is that if you're not at eye level vertically, the screen apprearance will deteriorate. Between the different projection TVs, I would recommend a DLP or Sony SXRD for your application.
I have a blog that goes through a comparison of different TV types. You may find it helpful:

The best all-around TV type is difficult to determine. They all have advantages and disadvantages. You must first determine if flat panel is important or rear projection will do. This will help you narrow it down. Best of luck!
