Workstation 16G RAM - where to get? DELL? ElNexus,JNCS?

by FDC1961 - 6/9/07 7:59 PM

I made preliminary search of possibilities to get a workstation with 16G memory. Speed is less important, but I guess this would be 2+GHz something dual core - something like AMD (64 bit, to be able use the memory).

If anybody can give a general advise on the seller to consider, I will appreciate very much. May be I even do not know some good company; this is the options I am presently considering:

1. Electronics Nexus (elnexus.com)
Dual Core Dual AMD Opteron 2214 64-bit 22GHz 2x1MB cashe.
Memory: 16GB as 8x2GB 667MHz DDR2 Reg ECC
nVidia GeForce etc
- comes close to $4,000.00

2. DELL
Dell Precision Workstation 690
Dual Core Intel® Xeon® Processor 5140 2.33GHz, 4MB L2,1333
16GB, DDR2 SDRAM FBD Memory, 667MHz, ECC in Riser (8 DIMMS)
250GB SATA 3.0Gb/s,7200 RPM Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst Cache™
etc.
Comes around $5,500.00

3. J&N Computer Services (jncs.com)
Intel Xeon Quad-Core model 5345, 2.33Ghz, 13333FSB
16GB: 8 Fully Buffered (FB)DIMM module, DDR2-667, 2gb ea x8
1 Seagate 320 Gb SATA-II 16mb Cache
Lite-On CD-RW, DVD-RW, Dual Layer, Black
1 Asus 7100GS 128mb Turbo-Cache 512mb 1 DVI, 1 VGA

- around $4,700.00
(they have AMD too).

4. Less seriously I also consider HP (too expensive), IBM (too expensive) and COLFAX International (www.colfax-intl.com) Colfax CX900 Series Workstations (AMD based or Intel based)

Price depends somewhat on hard drive(s) size, video card, but most important and costly is of course 16G (32G is way too expensive) and decent CPU (of course 64 bit).

Thank you very much for any advise.

Dell should do, Apple too.

Apple's Mac Pro can be had right off the shelf with 16G RAM and even a pair of Quad Core Xeons. The OS is not limited like most Windows to 4GB (actually 3 to 3.5G!) as well as the applications are mostly 64 bit capable today.

It can also run Windows, Linux, etc.

No mystery here.

Apple?

Thanks. Yes, I bought a few PCs from DELL, DELL is good, though it is the first time I try to get really big RAM workstation. FNCS seems attractive by reviews. As for Apple, it's too new for me. Used it long ago when it was completely different beast. If nowdays I can install Windows Vista, Visual Studio 2005 and use it, that's interesting. Still, looking at your link (thanks) I came to something like almost $7,000.00 when 16G memory is added. Too expensive. So, I am leaning to DELL or FNCS so far.

Having seen a few go to 4GB and beyond on PCs you gotta know this.

Most are PISSED!

Be sure your selected OS and applications will use this memory space.

What are you going to do with a 16 Gb machine?

Thanks all for concerns.
I am developing algorithms for long time and know reasonably well which of my programs need memory, and how much.
There are many ways to avoid so high memory usage, but time comes when it is almost inevitable.
I do not encourage at all anybody to do same. For most applications nobody needs more than 1G RAM, not to mention that one needs to go to 64bit windows (or Linux) to use more than 2G per application.
Thanks again.

Very clear and relevant answer. I was just a little bit concerned it was a question by somebody with too much money and too less knowledge of IT. But obviously that isn't the case.

Wish you goodluck and productivity with your machine to come.

Just for fun, let's build our own as cheap as we can.

Let's find our motherboards.
http://www.bizrate.com/motherboards/maximum-supported-ram--16-gb/processor-type--xeon/products__att19--269846-43992__att7--219122-.html

Cool. Now there's a few names I've used over the years.

Remember we're going cheap.

375.00 Tyan Thunder i7520 (S5360)
2,311.12 Crucial RAM http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=S5360%2D1U+Thunder+i7520R
174.99 Raptor 150GB 10K RPM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136011 No skimping here)
29.99 DVD burner. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827152076 No need for less.
309.99 EATX Case&PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811165014

Add one CPU.

159.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117071

I get 3021.08.

You get to see if it all works together?

it's a possibility, but...

Thanks, I thought about a possibility to build it myself,
but even with the help like you provide (specs you gave) it is not for me. Upgrading memory, adding drives is one thing, but to gather whole unit, especially with good CPU and large memory is another. I know that people with more experience still spend not one hour and not even one day on such project, and then afterward try finding what went wrong.

In installing a Windows OS. It's not easy enough yet. Most of the time it's just BIOS, drivers, little things like firewalls before connecting to the internet...
