Windows 2000 lan problem
by Faffnir - 6/1/07 6:26 AMI am using Windows 2000 with a lan connection to the internet, but all of the sudden, the connection doesn't work anymore. It's not the hardware (I've got a Linux installation on the same computer, and it works fine), so I just wondered, if anyone knew this problem and a possible solution.

Also exactly how the connection doesn't work any more (you haven't mentioned whether FTP still functions or whether you are not getting an IP address or whether tracert functions, etc.). You haven't mentioned any firewall, browser, etc.
Without knowing more I will suggest that you first try rebuilding yourWinsock then if that doesn't work re-install your NIC drivers, and if that doesn't work uninstall then reboot and reinstall TCP/IP.

I will try the winsocket fixing program.
I really don't know all those things, but I've shutdown the firewall, tried both Firefox and Internet Explorer (sould I try Opera?), don't know about ftp and ip address, but i suppose the latter is in order (I think the router/lan modem or what it's called) handles the IP (anyway I got one in linux)

Oh yes by the way. I've got two parallel Win 2000 installs (i tried to reinstall, but instead it installed a new copy beside the old one). in the newest, it worked for some time, but suddenly disappeared (I've never used that instal for anything)
that's about all I know about that.

If you did a parallel install of Windows and the new one failed, then the old one probably won't work correctly either.. In situations such as your's, I make a backup of all my important files, (I always have a backup anyway), then place the Windows CD in the drive, restart the computer, then follow the prompts to delete the partition, create a new one, then format and reinstall Windows.. It's usually the better part of valor.
Because it will wipe the drive completely, you'll need to have all the drivers and program installers available to install afterward but the clean install is normally the best way to proceed.

after having rebuild the tcp/ip (or something like that), it works fine.
About the double installs, they are both correctly installed. The reason for it to happen, was that my first install is an upgrade from win98, and the system folder's name is Windows instead of WinNT. when installing win2000 again, it installed in a winnt directory.
