problem on startup

by flindar - 6/5/07 8:58 PM

I'm having a problem while trying to start up. Everything is fine until my desktop appears and an anti-virus program immediately tries to automatically start. I simply need to know if I can stop this prgram from automatically starting each time I boot up and, if so, how?

Any help would be appreciated, thankyou .

Probably...

Probably depends on what anti-virus program you have cookin'. I'm running the paid edition of AVG and I can stop it from doing its scan anytime I want by right clicking and selecting either pause or stop.

While it means leaving your computer on 24/7, perhaps the best way is to have your anti-virus do its daily update and system scan when you're not using the computer (such as like 3 am.)

Most AV Programs Have a Setting......

often in "Scheduling" to set when scans run. They usually also have the option to NOT run automatically by unchecking auto on start-up/shutdown or other. Have a wander thru your AV's assorted settings with an eye out for what you need.
Effectively this means you do your scans manually when you like. I also prefer this manual method for updates.
Depends on which AV & which version you have.

I'm assuming you mean a legit AV you installed not a Smit-fraud or Vundo
Trojan drive-by install that pops up fake warnings. If those are the type you mean please post back with full description of what your seeing. We have links to remove them. Good Luck! :-)

What do you mean by "an anti-virus program immediately tries to automatically start"?

1] Is this an anti-virus program you are unaware of, (you said, "an", instead of "my")?

2] If it is your anti-virus program, what do you mean by "automatically start"?

Are you aware that most genuine anti-virus programs automatically load when the computer is turned on and then run silently in the background, protecting the computer whilst it is connected to the internet.

Is this what you mean? If so, why do you want to disable that?

3] If not, then is the anti-virus program attempting to scan your computer for viruses at startup?

If that is the case look in the programs settings, usually in Tools > Options, or Preferences or similar for Scheduled Tasks.

problem on startup

It sounds to me like it is not just the antivirus causing the problems but that the real culprit is that your system has too many programs running at boot and your system does not have enough ram to support it thus causing a memory error that forces the computer to restart in order to replenish its resources.

Remember the msconfig in the prior post, run it again and while looking at the folder called startup, remove all checkmarks next to all programs including the antivirus. Then click apply then close then reboot. This should fix your problem.

After rebooting and seeing that the problem(s) is gone, you need to open the configuration utility and enable your antivirus. If you're not sure which program is your antivirus, leave this configuration window open and then surf to a website http://sysinfo.org/startuplist.php and enter the name of the program found in the configuration utility and click search.

When completed, click apply then close then reboot.
