XP home Cd gone missing.

by shafiqkhan31 - 6/8/07 5:41 AM

Hi There,
I downloaded IE7 which caused some issues. I removed it, but could not launch IE6. Then I read Bob's excellent piece on the subject and decided to repair the XP installation, absolutely sure that I have the XP disk.
I had removed the the items to get the xp disk in to do the repair, before looking for the cd
.
I can not find my XP home CD to repair my IE6.

However after removing some bits I find that my IE6 is back though it is changed it is not the same as before. It does not say Internet Explorer 6 on top but it works fine.

Two issues:
1. Where can I find a replacement dick? I have the code number, It is working on my computer and I can install Vista if I decide to go that way.
2. I can not properly defragment my hard disk drive. After going through the process I end up with disk with quite large chunks of red mass on the analysis. It covers about one third of the disk. Which brings me back to reparing my XP.
Please help.
My PC is P4,1Gig Ram,Vista Adviser reports that it is ok for vista installation,it has nominal 60Gig disk though it stores about 55Gig at the moment with around 20 GB available.
Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.
Should I go for Vista or can I repair my XP without the disk?
Shafiq

XP home Cd gone missing.

You can use your friend's xp-cd to fix this problem. If you have a Dell, I suggest finding someone that has a Dell also and using their xp-cd. The same goes for Gateway and all the other computer manufacturers.

Notes...

* If you registered XP with Microsoft you can order a replacement CD for a nominal fee. On the other hand, if the OS was pre-installed you must call the manufacturer instead and order a system recovery set from them.

* You can borrow the CD from someone else and use your product key. If you have a retail copy of XP you need a retail CD, whereas if XP was preinstalled you must borrow a disk from the same make/model.

* Repairing XP likely will do nothing about the fragmentation issue. Instead, I would try using a third-part defragmenter. Diskeeper Lite is a free option, and the software the Windows defragmenter is based on.

Hope this helps,
John

Response to your PM...

"Thank you for your advice to help [defrag] issues with XP home. I have not bought it yet, it keeps trying (according to the Zonealarm) "Diskeeper service is trying to act as a server" I have thus far denied access. What is this about. If I allow it, what does it mean?

Shafiq,

That is a requirement for Diskeeper support technicians to offer remote assistance. Copied from the Diskeeper FAQs:

"A Note About Firewalls:
As a normal part of its operation, the Diskeeper Service (DkService.exe) acts as a server on your system. If you are running a hardware or software firewall, you may see messages indicating Diskeeper Service is trying to act as a server. These messages are expected; you can safely allow these events. This functionality is designed to allow for support for network operations (e.g. Remote Control) via Diskeeper Administrator.

You may also be notified that Diskeeper is trying to access the Internet. It is important to note that Diskeeper does not access the Internet (except when you specifically use the Check for Updates feature), but it does use Windows mechanisms that may trigger these alerts from your firewall. Again, these messages are expected and you can safely allow the events. If networkability or automatic update checking is not required, you can safely disable this.
"

Hope this helps,
John

I also lost my XP [standalone], and I'm about to order

by drpruner - 6/22/07 11:18 PM In reply to: Response to your PM... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

the replacement; got all my numbers, three personal references, background check, and fingerprint card ready for Mr. Gates. :-)

I did notice some reference here to defragging. Long ago I had problems with Win's built-in app, so I went outside, first to Diskeeper, then to Norton Systemworks (2004). I used the latter ever since my 98SE version developed digital asthma or some such, and it works fine. Will it work with XP, AFAUK? I liked Diskeeper (older version), so it's not good to read that it's the basis for any Win app, since they've been so poor in the past. (Even when they work they're slow.)
What do you think?

Microsoft USA&UK siblings!

by shafiqkhan31 - 6/23/07 4:12 AM In reply to: I also lost my XP [standalone], and I'm about to order by drpruner

There could not be more different siblings.
I get prompt response from M/S USA, saying I should get in touch with M/S UK. It is impossible to reach M/S UK or urge them to respond to any request to help.

I am very disappointed with UK based entity.

You got to jump through the hoops to no avail.

I have not been able to get any response.
Any suggestions.

As it is an OEM

by MarkFlax Moderator - 6/23/07 4:18 AM In reply to: Microsoft USA&UK siblings! by shafiqkhan31

I doubt that Microsoft will help.

Did you tell Microsoft USA that it was an OEM but that the computer maker was now out of business? If so, what was their response to this?

Here's some relevant info from US site:

by drpruner - 6/23/07 10:33 AM In reply to: Microsoft USA&UK siblings! by shafiqkhan31

"If you purchased your software from a system builder that is no longer in business, you can fill out the following appropriate replacement form and submit it by fax to the number indicated. Note that there will be a $30.00 U.S. charge (plus applicable tax) for media replacement.• United States, Canada, Latin America, or South America a. Download the replacement request form from the following Web site:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/a/b/babc90a1-b794-4a94-84f5-cbc37827ddca/Americas%20End%20User%20Media%20Replacement%20Form.pdf
b. Submit the media replacement form by fax to (661) 244-4401.

• Asia-Pacific (all countries except China and Japan) a. Download the replacement request form from the following Web site:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/4/8/a4859ac9-4d13-493b-90c0-59fa5137ccbd/APOC End User Media Replacement Form-FINAL.doc
b. Submit the media replacement form by fax to (65) 6779 2481."

I did notice there was no mention of the UK on the US site. "There will always be an England." -maybe not!

Now MY problem is that I don't have the product ID number, which I need to qualify for free support. (Instead of $59 US!)
