I've been wanting to find an alternative to the Apple iPod.
Is this a good choice?

If that isn't a good choice, do you have any recommendations?
Between now and December should see a few new units. Among them will be small changes like LED backlit displays. You may not think this is a big thing but it can be to such devices. What we are seeing today is not the cutting edge and we may see a change to better wireless use.
Hang in there if you can.

I have the Zen Vision M and I like it very much. Excellent sound. Great pic and video viewing. The FM autotune receiver works much better than my Walkman ever did. Mine is kind of slow in the search mode, but it's searching through the 6800 songs I have loaded on it. Playlists are easy to create and edit on the fly. The album art is vivid and doesn't wash out it sunlight.
The iPods don't get much use anymore!
...if you can't wait, I recommend the following viable alternatives:
Creative Zen Vision:M -- http://reviews.cnet.com/portable-video-players-pvps/creative-zen-vision-m/4505-6499_7-32165392.html?tag=lst
Toshiba Gigabeat -- http://reviews.cnet.com/portable-video-players-pvps/toshiba-gigabeat-mes30vw-30gb/4505-6499_7-31660763.html?tag=lst
Microsoft Zune -- http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players/zune-30gb-brown/4505-6490_7-32103045.html?tag=lst
Surprisingly, the last one kind of grew on me recently. I'm not a fan of "closed" digital music environments (such as iPod/iTunes, Sony walkman/Connect, and Zune/Zune Marketplace), but the Zune is a nice player with excellent sound quality, a nicely implemented FM tuner, a cool user interface, and a good screen for watching video (it auto-switches to landscape mode for that). It's missing some key things, like refined podcast support (it just mixes them in with music) and bookmarking (for audiobooks), but all-in-all, a solid player.
The Creative Zen is also fabulous in all of the above mentioned (aside from the large screen), AND includes podcast support and bookmarking, etc etc.
Hi there. I own a zen vision m 60gb and many of my friends own compeditior players including the ipod. I and everyone who has judged the player have confirmed that this is a far superior player and, is one of the most recommended digital media player on the market for the following reasons:
-Far more detailed screen (capable of displaying 262144 colours compared to the ipods 64000)
-Much more extensive video (and audio) file supportion (supports divx, xvid, mpeg 1,2, wmv etc.)
-Comes with built in FM tuner and microphone
-Programmable removable disk memory partitionage
-Freedom with graphical user interface (GUI, eg. programmable photo wallpaper, selectable themes)
-Custom EQ
-60gb version has USB host (able to download photos from cameras etc directly to player)
I have never once had a problem with the player and would highly recommend it
Good luck!
I purchased a Zune a couple of weeks ago @ best buy and they priced matched circutit city @ 199.00. First MP3 player very e-z download and marketplace is user friendly. Sound is excellent and video is very good. Wife has been listening to mine a lot so I bought a pink Zune for her. No problems with either one.
