DVD/VCR recorder advice

by professorbc - 5/31/07 8:25 PM

I just purchased a JVC DR-MV78B DVD/VCR Recorder from a shopping network. What few reviews I have found on it makes it sound like a pretty good one. However, my concern is that it does not have a tuner. I assumed it would have. Is that a good or a bad feature? Any pros or cons would be helpful.

ask yourself this question...

if it had a tuner, would you use it? if yes, then return it and grab a LG or panasonic which is more money...but has a tuner.

if your answer is no, then it is nothing to worry about.

Tuner free dvd/vcr recorder

I guess that sounds pretty simple. I have just been used to a VCR for the last 25 years, and I assumed the recorder would have a tuner built in. Since it didn't have one I thought maybe there was an advantage to not having a tuner on the recorder, but I couldn't figure out what it was. (It sounds like it just keeps the cost down.)

Digital tuners

by HTHMAN - 6/2/07 11:08 AM In reply to: Tuner free dvd/vcr recorder by professorbc

The problem is, all new DVD recorders that are manufactured must either include a digital tuner(expensive) or no tuner at all. Older models had analog tuners like VCRs and some of those may still be available. I have an onder Pioneer combo model and never use the tuner anyhow. I use it for transferring VHS to DVDs and to record off my Dish PVR using the S-video input. I am sure you still have a timer-recording setup to record from either S-vid or composite inputs, you just can not record off the air signals.

Tuner Absence No Problem...

if you have a cable or satellite box. The DR-MV78B has inputs for direct connection and recording from these tuner boxes. I think that these days a tuner in a VHS machine is superfluous for most people.
