I can't tell if you have the usual issue of motherboard drivers, but will walk you through it but not buried in someone else's post. Be sure to note the laptop make and model, and gritty details about the OS, who installed it, what version, etc.

My Audigy 2ZS Sound card has a Firewire connection..
..
How do you know your PC is IEEE1394 Firewire equipped??
There is a painful workaround to this problem ...
1. Reinstall Windows XP. Must be a new install. Do not install XP SP2 yet.
2. Attach your Canon ZR500 and allow XP to autodetect it and load the driver.
3. Test the connection. Should work.
4. Upgrade to XP SP2
The problem seems to be the driver not being able to install for the first time in SP2. It has to be installed prior to SP2. I could not get the driver to work at XP SP1 even after uninstalling the driver in SP2, removing SP2 and then trying to get it to load in XP SP1. I found the offending registry entries that were left behind by SP2 upon uninstall of the driver ... but windows would not allow me to clean them up.
Painful, but now it works.
Good luck.
