Windows XP Pro

by Themisive - 5/31/07 8:42 AM

I've just upgraded my machine to XP Pro 64 bit edition. At the momen I have AVG Free Antivirus, though to be honest, I don't think much of it.

I would like to get a decent Anti-virus suite (NOT Norton/Symantec) and a good anti-spyware system. The programmes in place are:

AVG Free anti-virus
Ad-aware SE v1.06r1
Spybot S & D
Spywareblaster

I haven't changed my profile as yet, but PC Cillin will not work on this O/S, and neither will Grisoft's Anti-Spyware.

It came highly reccommended. I have a MAC so I haven't used it.
I understand it's about $50.

Hope that helps.

You miss the point

Whilst I appreciate you taking the time to contact me, as I said, I don't think much of AVG anti-virus. I grant you that I have a firewall in my router, but I'd also like one a bit better than the Windows firewall as well, there are other things I want, such as e-mail scanning as well as general anti-virus protection and anti-spam protection.

One of the problems with AVG is that it appends to ALL e-mails, incoming or outgoing, the results of it's scan, surely that's MY business! Incidentally, wilst Trend Micro did scan the mails, the ONLY person who was informed was me.

Trend Micro were at least consistant, but unfortunately I've ended up with a programme I don't care for, since Trend Micro don't do a 64 bit system. Check my profile for the updated system specs, but remember, XP Pro 64 bit is NOT the same as Vista 64 bit.

Hmm, I just went and turned that off. You could have but I find today that many are losing control of their software. Some will explode as you show them that what they had did what they asked.

Avast

Try Avast Antivirus. I find it is a lot better than Trend Micro or AVG. It has a web scanner, network scanner, mail scanner, IM scanner, and a few other live scanners. The cost: free

To ssavoy0329:

I've downloaded Avast, installed and registered it, and got rid of that AVG programme as well.

I order - and pay for my groceries online (it's cheaper thatn going to the shop!). However, both the store and myself have been trying to find out the problem, and betwwen us we think we've narrowed it down to Avast Home. Most other anti-virus systems I know of allow you to list sites and/or addresses you wish to contact, as far as I can tell, Avast doesn't do this.

Whilst the situation has been partially resolved, I would much prefer a solution that worked. I used to have XP Home SP2 32 bit, but have changed this to XP Pro SP2 64 bit, my old anti-virus system, Trend Micro cannot help me, though they do one for Vista! This means I'm trying to find a programme that WILL work with XP Pro SP2 64 bit and also allow me to log on to sites WITHOUT having to use an accessibility option to connect properly.

As you will agree, what I want is a good anti-virus system that will work with XP Pro SP2 64 bit AND will allow me to state which trusted sites I can allow.

I doubt it is Avast that is the problem ...

by Edward ODaniel - 2/10/08 4:14 PM In reply to: Oops, I spoke too soon! by Themisive

can you buy and pay online for other merchandise? (Why, because I also use Avast and XP PRO x64 and have no problems.)

Check your browser's security settings and cookie permissions. Is the store using SSL or TLS and how is your browser set for them?

Did you install Java or does the store not make use of it?

Windows Script Host installed and updated?

What Firewall are you using and how is it set with regard to the store requirements? (Avast doesn't include one)

DISABLE ALL 7 of the Avast "Providers" and see if you can place and pay for your order - if not Avast has nothing to do with the problem. If you can place and pay for your order, next time you try to place an order only turn off one provider turned off - if the order goes through that was the culprit, if not turn it back on and turn off a different one until you can.

I did see a small blank window come up and a "blunk" noise when it did. I did get a full window that said thanx for loading AVAST, but where is it? New puter is Dell, Optiplex 745 with Profession XP 2 pack. Not that I know what any of that means... Tried reading Dell info guide, that was scary! Help please. Just want to be able to use anti virus. Thanx

HI,

you downloaded Avast Home Edition to your desktop?? Or where did you SAFE it? You have to install it before you can run it.

Could it be, you saved it into your Documents folder?

Avast has a pdf file for the installation, IF you want to read it before installing. You will find it here:

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

under SUPPORT > Avast! Installation Guide.

Before I check out Avast, should I completely remove the AVG free that I have installed now, or can they run together?
