Any News/Info on Philips New 47" LCDs?

by the46zone - 6/1/07 11:31 AM

Does anyone have any information on the new Philips 47" LCDs? The one I'm looking at is part number 47PFL5432D/37. It is found, from what I have seen, only at Wal-Mart. It does seem to have a sister tv (47PFL7432D/37 ) that is the same except it has Ambilight and is found at Best Buy. This seems like a TV that is too good to be true. It is only like $1650 and is 1080p. Below is a link to Philips site where the only info on this that I have found is located. PLEASE HELP if you know anything about the TV or look at the specs and have an opinion. CNET has no reveiw.

IT IS MY OPINION, BUT PHILIPS (MAGNAVOX) HAVE LOST THEIR....

QUALITY OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS. The AMBILIGHT feature is an overblown gimmick, and does nothing for the picture itself.

Personally, I feel their all Magnavox's.

A FANTASTIC new LCD model, the SAMSUNG LN-4665T would certainly keep you pleased for a long while. Yes, its pricey; but you must take a gander at this suberb new HDTV!!!

Ambilight

Sure it is a gimmic, but some merit too.

I have track lighting with a dimmer above my LCD that shines on the wall directly behind the TV giving a soft glow to the wall. Everyone who has seen the TV says that the picture looks a lot better with those lights on as opposed to a completely dark room. I have read a good bit about backlighting for Plasma and LCD TVs. All the proponents say you must have a lamp with the proper color temperature for the picture to look right. Try putting a lamp with a 25 or 40W or smaller bulb with the shade off behind your TV and see if it looks better before you spend the extra for the ambilight feature. Some people have attached rope lighting to the back of the TV and claim a nice improvement. That color changing ambilight feature would drive me nuts in about 15 minutes.

Not an essential feature

Sure not a feature that would lead me to buy a Phillips product over a Panasonic or Pioneer. Everything I read says that those who own it, turn off the color thing and just use the plain white light in a very short time. Ideal viewing is supposed to be a neutral photo gray painted wall behind the set with a 6500K light source backlighting the TV. Try to convince the wife that you need a gray accent wall in your house.

GOOD POINT; THAT WOULD BE A TOUGH SELL FOR MOST.

This TV does not have ambilight. There is one that has ambilight with the same features but to me not worth it.

Any bad things about that TV or Philips (outside of ambilight). I left a link hoping someone would check it out and tell me.

UNFORTUNATELY PHILIPS SEEMS TO HAVE LOST THEIR EDGE IN HDTV,

RELYING TOO MUCH ON "AMBILIGHT", AND BASICALLY STOOD STILL. Personally I wouldn't recommend a PHILIPS to anyone in 2007. I'd sooner suggest a new SAMSUNG than a PHILIPS; though PANASONIC and SONY are my go to brands. PIONEER just too pricey for their own good; in a mass market.

Model numbers

by HTHMAN - 6/3/07 9:44 AM In reply to: Any News/Info on Philips New 47" LCDs? by the46zone

A lot of manufacturers sell the same item to different retailers under different part or model numbers so you can not get price matches. A lot of times the only difference is the trim or another feature, but the guts are all the same.

At that size and price, there are other LCDs such as Westinghouse and Vizio that you need to check out. Go to the AVS forum and search for threads on all three of these TVs for owner opinions.
