DNS problem
by kcreek - 5/31/07 1:14 PMI have a pc that will allow HTTP traffic because of a dns problem. If I type in the ip address of the site instead of it's domain name, the site comes up fine. Network connectivity is NOT the problem. Can anyone help?

If it does, try to ping the server. Enter ping followed by the IP address. If it's not present or fails to ping contact your ISP.

...internet connection? Have you tried flushing the DNS? (Open a command prompt window and type: "ipconfig /flushdns" (without the quotes), then press the "Enter" key.)Do you run a HOSTS file or have an antispyware program that uses one? What We need more information about what you've tried to fix the problem?
Tried re-enabling with the "DNS Client" service? (If you're using a HOSTS file, make sure to disable it by renaming before enabling the "DNS Client" service.)

I flushed DNS and the HOSTS file has not been edited. All antispyware programs don't use a HOSTS file. The computer is configured as all the other hosts are on the network (gets IP and DNS information automatically). All the other hosts have no problems.

What kind of computer is it? Operating system, etc.?
You still haven't told us what you've already tried to fix the issue..
Did you open the HOSTS file and check to see if there are strange entries? Did you try renaming it to "HOSTS.txt" so it's disabled?
Checked for spyware yet? If so, which tools?
Have you disabled the firewall on your computer or router to see if that's the problem?
Tried updating the firmware on your router/modem? (Yesterday, I fixed similar problems on Vista computer which had router problems. Installed new firmware and everything works great now.)
Wireless or wired connection? Have you tried installing updated drivers for the network adapters (ethernet or wireless) on the computer?
Just for kicks, try running the WinsockXPFix utility from the link below. If there are minor issues with the Winsocks, it should fix them:
