I love technology and I love it in the car. As long as it does not get in the way of driving.
1. Make it all hands free. If it's not, you can't use it. Hands free cell phones. Voice activated GPS. Radios that you can tell what station.
2. Make folks use the stuff when they take a driving test. If you can't do it during the test than you are not allowed to do it period. Your license should state that you are qualified to eat french fries, talk on a cell phone and look through the glove box, all at once. If not than you should get a ticket for doing it. ![]()
It's common sense realy like walking and chewing gum at the same time?
[ 1 ]Common sense tells us to obtain a hands free devise if recieving calls whilst in traffic ?
[ 2 ] If dialing pull over and stop and then dial and then re enter traffic using a hands free device?
[ 3 ]Use a speaker phone setup for a two way activation the same as a on computer ?
Regarding your G.P.S. Device if their are two in the car ?
That is what navigators are for?
If not ?
Pull over get the directions and then once again rejoin the common flow of he trtaffic ??
Common sense once again ?
Common sense.....that's the problem, how many people do you know these days that have it. You may, and I'd sure like to think that I do, but I see so many people these days that don't and there lie's (sp) the problem. I guess they missed the "class on common sense", because they obviously weren't born with it!
There is no common sense anymore. You see a guy cheat on his wife, then move in with his affair only to be shocked she's cheating on him. He loses his family, his money, his life, and everyone thinks he is scum, and he sits there cluelessly wondering why it all happened. No, there really isn't any common sense in America at all.
The reason no one has common sense is easy. You are not born with it, you are taught it by your parents. Point being, most parents didn't parent. Or did parents, but were a horrible example. I know one girl whose mother never married, went from boy friend to boy friend, had huge fights, had police coming to throw out her out of control boy friend... and her mother is shocked the girl is hooked on drugs, slicing her wrist, moving in with boy after boy (just like her), and can't figure it out. No... common... sense.
The problem here as it relates to this thread is, I know you can't mandate "common sense", and making a bunch of laws will only make it so honest people get nailed, while dangerous drivers still roam free.
Again, make people responsible for their actions. That's all that is required. When someone crashes for any reason (other than weather or mechanical failures) Nail them to the wall.
And don't go the "hate crime" route either. Do not make it some doing a bad thing *THIS WAY* is worse than doing a bad thing another way. Do not have a law like "if you crash while having a cell phone within twenty five feet of your line of sight, then the punishment is double". That's retarded and ignorant of people harmed or killed because the driver was just plain bad. "oh my sister was killed by someone not using a cell phone so he just got a fine" no no no no...
Just hold people accountable for what they do. End of story.
all good to have
I think when cell phones all go hands-free because that is the only way they can be used legally, many of the problems they cause will be diminished. Those caused by operator error will continue,no matter what initiatives are in place.
We have a voice- command GPS. Took it along on a visit to Texas. Once our home base was nailed down it was tremendously helpful in getting us back no matter where we went. But the thing I liked most about it was the tremendous advantage it affords while driving in the dark. It is sometimes very hard, almost impossible to spot street signs as you try to find your way. The voice on the GPS tells you when to turn, no need to be trying to peer into the darkness to see where you are.
This is a tremendous advance in driving safely in "uncharted waters."
I am against all forms of gadetry that distracts driver's attention from the road. In Australia it is illegal to use mobile phones whilst driving unless they are handsfree, but I am even against that as it still detracts the driver's attention. We have enough other distractions without gadetry adding to the problem. How many times have we heard 'I was changing the cd when I had the accident". There are advertisements showing a young woman txt messaging and hitting the car in front. Enough is enough!!!!
Ban phone and radios! I was hit by a guy just changing radio stations. Ban them all!
But I was also hit by a guy who was distracted by someone in the car, so ban passengers!
But I have a friend who was hit by a guy who was just a plain and simple horrible driver!!
BAN CARS!!! No one will EVER GET HIT AGAIN!
Or we can just make people accountable for their actions. I'm voting for that.
Cell phones when used as necessary are handy and very convenient. I remember the days before cell phones, when I was in my car and had to make a phone call. The only choice was to look for a public phone. Yes, there are times when you have to make a call. The problem nowadays, is that lots of people seem to grab the cell phone as soon as they get in the car. Cell phone use in cars is necessary to make important calls. But it is not for everyone. Some people cannot talk and drive at the same time, because they get easily distracted. I read an inquiry in my local Sunday’s newspaper about using cell phones in cars. Some people think the problem is drivers using just one hand on the steering wheel, could cause accidents. I do not think this is the problem, because if some cannot drive well with one hand, that person should not be driving any way. There are people that have just one hand, and they drive well. I am for cell phone use in cars. They are a necessity to me, and I should have the right to use it. Maybe, people should be tested for the ability to use cell phones while doing other tasks.
I'm not against a cell-phone in a car. It's always a usefull tool. But I must disagree about talking and driving at the same time: My point is not about driving skills, which are supposed to be evaluated when you get your driving license. It's about importance.
If a phone-call is so important you need to attend it during your trip, it should get your whole attention. Your whole attention.
Driving is a potentialy dangerous activity. Not because of you. You're an experienced, savvy and careful driver. But we don't live and drive in a perfect world. Your surroundings can be a source of problems: The other drivers, accidents or obstacles on the road,...
Driving deserves your complete attention. If you're talking by phone, a half of your attention (or more) goes to the person at the phone.
Driving and important phone-call deserve your complete attention. Drive or talk by phone, just one thing at the time.
Sincerely yours
Let's get a life folks, really! Pretty soon, the government (local, state, or federal) will totally control everything we do, if we continue to legislate all of our Constitutionally mandated rights into oblivion. The government already restricts us in so many ways. I agree with several people who not only advocate that we each accept our individual responsibility for how safely we drive.
I've personally experienced times when talking on the phone was too distracting, and voluntarily shut it off, but I will fight vigorously for my right to take advantage of the captive time I spend in a car that I can use to multitask safely. Eating food, drinking hot coffee, smoking cigarettes, watching videos, even carrying on extended conversations are ALL extremely distracting activities, especially when there are several people in a car and multiple distractions occurring at the same time.
Are these anti-cell phone nuts going to make it illegal to eat, drink, smoke or talk in your car next? Because if they outlaw cell phones, then all those activities should also be outlawed! Every person is different, and their reaction to distractions is different. What we all need to do is KNOW OUR LIMITATIONS, and then observe safe driving practices at all times based on our own limitations and abilities.
ANYTHING that distracts a driver from paying 100% of his/her attention to the task of driving should be limited and practiced with discretion! However, when you want to start outlawing my freedom of speech, then I am going to draw a line in the sand. I spend a lot of time in my car, as a person who travels for a living, and I can get a lot of business done in that "captive" time spent driving when I can't do anything else.
I agree with you 100%. The bottom line is responsibility. I have a cell phone with speaker and also a blue tooth for the phone. I also use a GPS system in my vehicle. I know my limits, dial using voice recognition and program the GPS prior to my vehicle moving on any road. I have seen people with two hands on the wheel, no distractions except mind distractions run stop signs, miss emergency vehicle sirens until they were literally pushed to the side of the road. So, it is as I stated responsible driving. It is not the phone or GPS device but the lack of sound judgement by the driver that causes accidents. I have seen people on cell phones, reading maps, newspapers, etc. veer all over the road. They are the idiots who were given a drivers license and abuse the privilege. Use caution and smart judgement when driving! We don't need more laws and Big Brother controlling us for every little thing.
I have no problem with sat nav in vehicles, can be very useful or even a curse, but it all depends on how responsable the driver of the vehicle is. I personall dont use my phone in car if it goes of I ignore it, but since I purchased my new sat nav, that picks up my calls and I can even answer the phone by pushing one button. Having said that though I still do not use that facility, because I honestly feel that if you are talking on a mobile you are more interested in what you are sayiing or what is being said to you, that it is totally impossable to be concentrating on driving 100%, and any one that says they are still totally focused driving and talking on the phone in my opinion are liars.
Only this morning I have seen 4 drivers using hand held phones whilst their vehicle is in motion, this is against the law, but these people seem to think they are above the law, one of the drivers I saw was actually going round a round about with a phone in hand, they could so easily kill or seriously maim someone. I bet if these people who still drive holding their phones, had a son or daugher killed by someone using a phone whilst driving the boot would then be on the other foot.
My response to the survey question about GPS and Cellphones:
Just yesterday, here in Oklahoma, another child was killed
while trying to cross the street because some man in a pickup
was looking down to reach for his cellphone. That child will
never come back. Will never hug her mama. He not only killed
her but also broke the hearts of family members as well.
This is just another incident where the smart assed driver
"thought" he had control! He didn't. The little girl
was only SIX INCHES away from the curb when he struck and killed
her. He even admitted he was reaching for his cellphone at the
time of impact!
Ban the use of cellphones in automobiles or get off the road!
ok DMB will you ban children in the cars, too??? I got into an accident once long time ago because one of my own children distracted me. Cell phones don't kill children, careless people do. So let's just punish ALL people for the mistakes of some careless people.
