Happy be-lated Birthday!
I wanted to ask you how your are enjoying your new HDTV. Have you calibrated yours with one of the DVD disc yet?
Looking forward to your reply,
hyghwayman
for the b-day wishes.
I am loving the xbr970. It is ironic. I seemed to find all the time in the world to research the world of HDTV and what not. But now that I finally bought the sony, I've all of sudden got really busy and have not had as much time to play with my new toy.
I have calibrated the tv once using the original Avia disc. I don't think I did it right though and as lame it might sound, I am really not understanding what is supposed to be one of the more easy calibration discs out there. Also, there is supposed to be a Avia II calibration disc released next month that is more current (Avia I was made in 1996/97) and more geared towards HD content and has more test patterns. Unfortunatley, I think there is a disc (at about $50 each) for every type of input, i.e. blu ray, hddvd, etc. And if I am having this much probelm with the 1st, I should expect the same with the second.
So, I think I'll try to calibrate again with Avia I maybe later tonight. I really want to avoid hiring an ISF calibrator and maybe spend close to the same amount that I paid for the tv!!! But it might be a good idea given the difficulty I seem to be having.
Did you calibrate by eye? How did that go for you?
On other note, I am having lots of fun with new(ish) sony. Ps3 games and BR movies look great. I am rediscovering my sd dvds with my oppo dv-970. I finally got around to hooking up my xbox last night and it looked great as well. SD cable looks better than I thought it would. I want to research getting a HD antenna. I live out in the boondocks so to speak about 20 miles from the nearest metro city. So I am not sure (because I have not gotten off my butt and researched) if that is too far away to get a good HD signal.
I'll let you know what I decide to do about calibration. And please feel free to drop me line with any questions/suggestions/etc.
James
So nice to see someone that plays blue ray movies I have the stand alone player and have a question for you Ok Iam running a h.d.m.i. cable straight from the player to t.v. and audio straight to the amp using optical audio cable Blue ray movies look beautiful on my 72" d.l.p. set but standard d.v.d.s have very poor picture quality I have tried changing every setting and went as far as trying it with componit vidio cables but no luckHow does your ps-3 look with standard d.v.d.s? In closing I now own 4 blue ray movies and the one that really pops is Casino Real awsome picture and sound please reply sounds like a awsome t.v. good luck stewee
In case of the ps3, there is no upscaling for sdvds (as of current). I have read that other stand alone br players do better job with sd dvds and then some don't. I have not tried any sd dvds on the ps3 because I knew that it would not upscale. So I bought an oppo dv-970 and have both it and ps3 running through a sima 3x1 HDMI switcher. Was not my first choice. I'd rather had it hooked up directly to the tv. But my sony only has 1 HDMI input. It all seems to work well. So in my case, my only real option for watching upconverted SD dvds was to buy a seperate dvd player. I was fortunate to have that option. Sounds like to me you've have tried everything as far as settings, cables, etc. If you have the $$, maybe consider a new dvd player for your sd dvds as I did. There may be BR players out there now or in future that will be able to upconvert sd dvds, but if you already know that yours won't, I can't think of any other option. Buying a new BR player is out of the question. In case of the PS3 there may be a future firmware update that may enable it to do this function. But I did not want to wait around for this.
Sorry, I don't know if that helps much...James
Boy did I screw up my old Denon 2910 player put out a stunning standard d.v.d. picture, but I sold it to one of the c.net guys. for $150.00 Now it looks like I will have to buy another player and add a h.d.m.i. switcher since I use both h.d.m.i. ports on my Toshiba I will check out the oppo player does it have a h.d.m.i. output port? bad picture quality really shows up on my 72" display thanks for your input stewee
I think I misread the part of a seperate disc for each input. It does not seem be like that after all.

calibration is still something I'm learning about like I said

Now does this mean you can't just buy an already-made antenna instead? Or do you have to make one?
James
check the antenna.org site to see if you need big time help with fringe reception before dismissing easily available & affordable (40 bucks or so) ready made antennas. Most will not have to consider making one.
Actually I would prefer not to have to build antenna. I was not sure if it would be necessary because I live fair distance away from metro area and there's lots of tree near house. So I was thinking a ready-made antenna might not fit the bill. I'm still exploring this subject. I will check that website again (I looked at it breifly but was distracted)
Thanks again
James
Radio shack cheapie Please dont laugh, San Francisco stations about 70 miles and they all come in at 92% and when I want to see the local san jose stations which are in the oposite direction I put some vice grips on the pole and run outside and twist the mast so cheap did not buy a rotor o well its only a mobil home ha ha stewe
My apologies.
This started as a question to me from Hyghwayman about calibration and the sony kd34xbr970. Sorry about that Hyghwayman. Hope to hear from you soon as I need help/advice on how to calibrate.
James
I just have been so busy playing Halo2 and now Halo3 Beta on my Sony. I have never really done a thing to my TV. When playing games I use the Vivid mode and when I'm watching videos or OTA broadcast I use the Pro mode. I would love to have this thing cali. but just can't justify spending that much money on my TV when the PQ is already so good!
Did you see that Sony is no longer selling this awsome TV per thier web site?

As far as calibration goes, I have not really done more than that first 'trial' with avia i and then adjusted by eyesight. I've been most pleased and also don't really see the need for a professional ISF calibration. I'm glad I jumped at this tv when I had the chance.
The PS3 looks great. In fact with the last firmware update the PS3 is able to upconvert SD DVDs and ps1 and ps2 games. I am somewhat kicking myself as I feel the ps3 does just as good and really a better job of making my sd dvds looking better than my Oppo!!
I may try calibration again when the avia ii is available (it may be out I'd have to check) but for now everything looks great. I only have HD content with blu ray movies, games.
On another note, I have developed an addiction to buying blu ray movies. I now own about 27 blu ray movies and 4 ps3 games. I feel like a kid at the candy store when I am at BB (although its cheaper online) and can't seem to stop buying blu ray titles.
In short (pun intended as I know this is turning into a long post), I am very pleased with XBR970 choice as it satisfied most if not all of needs. Not an easy thing to do for an avid gamer's demands. I am with you in wanting to wait a few years for the LCDs and plasmas to continue to get better.
And I must know, how is Halo III? I bought the 1st xbox almost immediately after playing Halo I and I still play it and halo II from time to time.
Godd to hear from you...James
so fricken awsome. The final game release in September will be out of this world. Bungie has done such a great job with the graphics for the Beta and I have read that the final version will be much better.
There is just too much to talk about that I'l just give you the link to Bungie.net so you can read it there.

My new XboxLive Gamertag is; hyghwayman
If you do a search for me you will see how much I have played. I also got the Custom games working through a glitch in the Beta. Sweet controls in the Customs too.
