Driving Cell Phones NO!!! GPS...It's a possibility?

by jdspoon - 5/30/07 6:18 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

TOO MANY people seem too attached to their cell phones. They think it's their life line. My umbilicus was severed 50 some odd years ago. Don't want a phone for distraction while I'm driving. If I did possess one...some other drivers probably wouldn't appreciate my using it to alert authorities to their careless and imprudent, too often intoxicated progress on the highways. (I seem to attract these sorts, no matter what the time or location.) If folks gotta talk on the phone...let 'em stay home with their cord or cordless in the comfort of their home, where they WON'T BE A THREAT to me, you or themselves while driving!

As for GPS...it could be a distraction to someone that's more "in-tune" to today's electronic marvels and gets lost in their own neighborhood. PULL OVER if there's a need to "tweak" the unit or double check function/status of trip progress. That puts them out of harms way. The up-side...the trip services with "turn-by-turn" audio instructions can save time and money (time is money?...oh well!) and allow "directionally-impaired" folks an opportunity to reach their destination the first time (higher probability of "on-time"), -vs- having to go to the next exit or a worse case, turn around in the middle of the road because they were/are flustered that they missed their turn/exit. BAD thing about these electronic travel guides is that they're only as good as their software is current. Lots of ever-changing road construction to deal with. Try taking US HWY 40/I-64 in downtown St Louis for the next couple years. Yikes! And of course...we've all seen the idiot on the reality TV, that's backing up against the flow of high-speed traffic to backtrack to the exit he just blew past. (He was probably jammin to the tunes on his i-Pod or MP3.)

Want to use a phone. PULL OVER, get clear of traffic and knock your silly self out. That's all for now and remember... Drive safe...the life you save could be MINE!

cell phones in the car

by bkbhimani - 5/30/07 6:18 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

cell phones are very convenient and an essential tool for emergencies. They should be allowed in the car but hands free only and should be used for essential thngs. They do create a most dangerous weapon when used indiscriminately. Bad drivers are going to be bad drivers no matter what. no one has control over them.

Against Phones? and GPS?

by LynneM - 5/30/07 6:19 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

I am definitely against phones in the cars. The GPS would be better if it were verbal, all the way. Some people could really use this, especially in showing them the way HOME. lol
I am against the distraction of using phones while driving, there is too much going on while you are driving, and we don't need someone's inattention to the road and traffic to compound the problem.
A GPS that could be activated by voice commands (like some of the old tape recorders were) and that would verbalize the directions MIGHT be all right, but having to take your eyes off the road to look at a unit is dangerous. It only takes a second for something to come onto the path that you are following and if you are looking at your GPS instead of the roadway, you could get into a very bad accident.

For it to a certain degree!

by ftballtw - 5/30/07 6:19 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

I have a friend that has GPS on a laptop that speaks the directions and when to turn etc, and shows a red dot where you are at the time, so you could glance at it. Otherwise, it would be wise to stop and get your bearings and the cell phone thing is a big problem. You can use some kind of hands free device or speaker phone. I use a cell in the car but do not make many calls and try to stay very alert. People just have to use good judgment.

Glad no one has ever noticed me watching my satellite TV on my in-dash DVD screen in my Hummer whilst motoring home from work. GOD, it's great to be an American!

There are always distracted drivers...

by peyiks - 5/30/07 6:20 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

I've been a professional bus driver since I was 20, and I'm 55 now. Never an accident, in a bus or my own car. And I chalk this up to "paying attention" on the road, which counts for more than skill or even dumb luck. Don't allow yourself to be distracted. In my own car, I do not drive with the radio on...period. I cannot pay attention to traffic and my surroundings when part of my mind is tied up listening to a political debate or even admiring the violins of Strauss. I do like listening, particularly my 60's-70's real old school rock, but I do it while parked. I do not use a cell phone in the car... anyone calling me can wait. No business offer or latest gossip (which most people use it for anyway) is worth my life or injuring others. I've seen drunk drivers in better control than cell-phone users! I watched from my high bus seat as a driver in a big older classic Mercedes fumbled his cell phone, swerved across two lanes in front of me at 60 MPH as he bent to pick it up, then continued his chat as though nothing ever happened... when I gave him a horn blast, he gave me the finger... not putting his phone down to do it. We don't need more distractions. We DO need better driver education, and better consequences for poor drivers.

Cell phones and driving

by s0568036 - 5/30/07 6:20 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

Using cell phone when driving....Bad!!!!!!!!!
I do one the average of 40 estimates for repair of Motorcycles each summer. 9 out of 10 Motorcycle rider have told me that the person who hit, broadsided them, skidded into them or ran a traffic light or stop sign was talking on a cell phone..... I personally have had them pull some very crazy stunts when they were talking away..oh so you think I making this up(?) Take a look at my pickup..was mint and now has some paint damage due to a nut case taking on a cell phone in her left ear and holding a cup of coffee in her left hand. She was concerned that when she swerved she spilled her coffee (HOT) in her lap...Did not give a D==n about the whit paint from her SUV being on my fender and right mirror, just her coffee. Cell phone are exelent to carry for emergencies WHEN YOU ARE STOPPED AND NOT DRIVING ALONG FOOL!!!!! iF IT SOUNDS LIKE I AM DOWN ON CELL PHONES BEING USED WHILE DRIVING....YOU ARE RIGHT!!!!!!!

Prius Doesn't Let You (or Your Passenger) Use GPS While Driv

by lambanlaa - 5/30/07 6:21 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

How's that for dumbing down what could have been a useful feature. The driver can handle it!

As for cell phones, I pull over if I don't have my bluetooth headset on. Handsfree works for me.

GPS and cell phones in cars

by bperegoy - 5/30/07 6:23 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

I am an appliance installation contractor and cover a 100 mile radius from base. Local paper maps are so out of date that they are useless.
I use a GPS with audio directions to find addresses in new sub-divisions and unfamiliar areas. I program the address before going on the road and don't have to look at the display while driving.
I favor this type of aid in cars as I don't have to fumble with paper maps, slow traffic while I'm trying to find a street name or house number. The GPS usually gets me within 50 feet of the address
I also use my GPS for vacation trips as it gives me advance warning of turns and freeway exits I might miss.
I would NOT want to use a GPS without verbal directions especially in heavy traffic. Trying to read the display while driving CAN be a distraction.

I limit the use of cell phone while driving and usually pull off the road if possible.

GPS should be built-in in every car sold

by milansabata1958 - 5/30/07 6:26 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

I drive about 70K miles a year. Rather than looking for small print in Thomas's Map book while driving, I get my directions from GPS. I think GPS should be made standard equipment in every car sold. I truly believe that "product cycle" will take care of my wish in very near future. If there is somebody who doesn't have GPS yet - than get one, you won't be disappointed !

Cars and gadgets in cars

by nomadd74 - 5/30/07 6:26 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

I am completely against all devices in cars. I think stereo systems and c.d. players are bad, since they drown out the traffic coming up behind you. I also dislike cell phones, and guiding devices, as they also distract the driver.
In today's world with high traffic density driving is not for pleasure and fun, it's a very serious business, except in isolated areas. The days of looking at the scenery as you drive along are long gone. Keep your eyes on the road. When you wish to view the sights, stop the car and look.
I have got rid of my car and now ride a 50cc motor scooter. I need to have my full attention, thinking about those behind me and those on the left and right. I am forced to just concentrate on riding my scooter, that is how all driving should be.
Accidents are caused by careless and thoughtless idiots on the road.
If you really feel the need to have all the above gadgets. Why not get yourself a chauffeur.

For GPS

by willybgh - 5/30/07 6:26 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

I am for the GPS but for the ones that speak to you so that the driver does not have to take their eyes off the road or look for street signs as the GPS (Such as the one I have, TOMTOM 910) will guide you via voice and also has blue tooth for the [phone if you absolutely need to be in touch at all times.

I am against all distractions

by fdms71 - 5/30/07 6:29 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

It has become very obvious that cell phones have become a terrible thing in cars. Everytime I notice a car driving two slow, moving all over the lanes not using a signal, etc. 98% of the time the driver is on the phone. I have a cell phone I know it is a pain to operate while walking let alone driving. Cell phones require much attention to operate. mixed with a car is very bad. I also own a gps unit. Which can be distracting if you let. But if you program it and just listen to the directions it is no worse than the person next to you reading the directions of a map. To prevent the peaking at the screan I face it away from my view. I feel there should be a much stricter ban on cell phone use in a car. I think the phone should be taken away a heavy fine and points should be appiled to the driver. What will be the outcome when someones family is killed because another driver was on the phone yelling at his wife or yapping with a friend. It is just as bad as driving drunk you know someone is going to be hurt.
