GPS, yes; Cellphones NO!

by ps4u - 5/30/07 5:51 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

The GPS is useful and a great alternative to a driver trying to figure out where he is and where he should go. They give you voice commands to help you that are very accurate. A heck of a lot better than the driver that crosses two lanes of traffic to catch the off ramp at the last minute. If you are a driver, and have to enter commands, of course you have to pull over. If you have a traveling companion, they can enter the info for you.

The cellphone is a constant distraction when you are using it. Love the person in the fast lane that hits his brakes to answer his cellphone, or worst yet, tried to dial. (Yes, I am guilty of using it too, but I am breaking myself of the habit.)

Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars?

by drjoebdavis - 5/30/07 5:52 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

Oh yes, I forgot to mention. Auto manufacturers are trying to include, or at least press the sale of, hands-free cell phones in cars. In spite of the lies the salesman or advertising may espouse, they're just as dangerous as hand-held cell phones. Why would an auto manufacturer include a distracting and dangerous accessory? It's the money, folks! So what if you total the car while talking on the phone. That's not an injured customer, that's ANOTHER AUTO SALE!

No but how do you uset it

by tuomoks - 5/30/07 5:52 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

Different than most cell users I had my first in car 1984 and no problems. Even at that time you got the hands free operation. In (field) support I did drive 50K+/yr miles from customer to customer and cell was invaluable ( and sometimes a problem when you did want to go home and not to the next customer ) Anyway, anything that distracts the driving is dangerous, is it your girlfriend, a passenger or badly designed GPS device. I think it is up to the driver to drive and if not feasible, bad weather, bad traffic, whatever, not get distracted. But laws can not do that, education can ( IMHO )

Abusing technology

by hanselthecaretaker - 5/30/07 5:53 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

One must realize that there's no excuse to neglect your attention to the road. Sure, we live in a fast paced world but if it's gotten to the point where you can't wait to take a call til after you're out of traffic (or off the road altogether) then something needs to change. 9 times out of 10 when someone does something stupid on the road it's because there's a cell phone involved. I think it should be treated no differently than drunk driving. No matter how your attention is diverted from driving, it is an act of recklessness.

against cell phones in cars

by alicechamp - 5/30/07 5:53 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

I think it's everyone's responsibility to be extremely cautious with cell phones. It should not distract in any way. Roads are suppose to be safe and if you are concentrating on the conversation of your cell phone just a lack a judgement could cause an accident. True of not using cell phones but why take a chance. It should be used for emergency purposes only (accident, flat tire, or your late for an appointment just move to the soft shoulder then resume your drive) As for GPS good idea if you are going on long trips and not sure of the way but it should be a distraction either.

GPS and Cell Phones in Cars

by Oldrivers - 5/30/07 5:53 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

My 2005 pickup truck just turned 245,000 mile. Yes I drive a lot, and I wouldn't leave the drive way without my GPS. I not only use it for directions, I use it to locate eating places along my route; I use it to keep track of the number of miles and hours that I drive in a particular period of time; and I use my GPS to record "waypoints" of places I want to re-visit.

I use approximately 1200 minutes a month worth of cell phone service and the majority of those minutes are used while I am driving.

I also eat, talk, and read as I drive.

I can honestly say that I have driven more than 2 million miles without an accident, and have only been the victim of "road rage" from other drivers a couple of times.

Did I memtion that I also pray as I drive.... that's important.

To many distractions already!!!

by greenbmwrider - 5/30/07 5:54 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

I am not against a GPS or a cell phone in the car as long as you are not interacting with either device. There are enough other distractions both in and out of the car to keep us busy driving and looking out for the other drivers that are using their GPS and cell phones, etc. The same thing can also be said for eating, tuning the radio, scolding the kids in the back seat, etc.

I agree!!!!

by Frank Shepherd - 5/30/07 6:04 PM In reply to: To many distractions already!!! by greenbmwrider

I work for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. A coworker and friend was killed this last January when he was run over (he was 15ft from the road at the time) by a driver who reached over to answer his cell phone. Working on and alogn the Interstates and roads of this state for 14 years has taught me that while yes, other things can distract- but nothing so compleatly as a cell phone and the resulting conversation. I carry two cell phones. One state owned and one personal. When my phone rings, I pull over to the side of the road and come to a stop before yacking away if more than a yes or no and goodby is required.

I,m against

by Fish - 5/30/07 5:57 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

cell phone use while your vehicle is moving.First off your attention is distacted from the road to the phone.Example no.1=texting requires
you to divert the eyes and the mind.Example no.2= Your call may involve an argument or some disasterous news which will surely take your mind off traffic and your hand off the wheel.
For the record,I do not use or own a cell phone nor does the wife.
I understand the required surgury to have a phone removed from the ear is quite expensive.I guess this is why most users never remove them. :-) >))))*>

I am for allowing phone and GPS use in cars.

by nelsonj3 - 5/30/07 5:57 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

I think that cell phones should be legal in cars as long as you are using a hands free device. Both hands should be able to be on the wheel. I use a Bluetooth headset with my phone and wouldn't talk with out it even when I am not driving. California law now requires hands free devices for phones while driving.
As far as GPS devices go, a well designed GPS used correctly will prevent people looking at maps constantly. I will be getting a GPS unit for my laptop shortly here so that I don't constantly look at maps when I am on the road. I am training to be a real estate appraiser and am on the road every day. Maps are my biggest distraction right now, but if I had a computer audibly telling me where to go it would help a lot.

I'm all for it

by coreyadavis - 5/30/07 6:02 PM In reply to: I am for allowing phone and GPS use in cars. by nelsonj3

I think that they should be allowed in vehicles because if used properly they are both great tools to have. In my truck I have the hands free bluetooth box connected in with my stereo and i love it. Now as far as the GPS goes that is a very valubale tool to me because I work offshore and I am always having to go to diffrent docks between Mobile, AL and Galveston, TX so the GPS is very benificial to me because it guides me right to the dock where I won't be late or get lost trying to get there.

For the record

by nelsonj3 - 5/30/07 6:04 PM In reply to: I am for allowing phone and GPS use in cars. by nelsonj3

Just for the record, I wait to call or check my maps until I am not in a tricky situation with traffic. Driving comes first. I frequently tell people I can't talk while I change lanes etc. even with the Bluetooth. When I get the GPS I won't fiddle with it while I drive. I will set my route before leaving and pull over if I have to change it. I just don't think they should be banned outright.

Distracted by the phone?....try hooking up the hands free!

by masterworx - 5/30/07 6:00 PM In reply to: Are you for or against GPS and cell phones in cars? by wcunning CNET staff

Very much against regulation....BUT some folks just don't know their limitations! I can do a lot of different things while driving-I was an outside sales rep for a while! I see a lot of folks who simply can
t! I once rode with a tow truck driver that literally had to STOP the truck to answer the phone! That would have been fine if he had pulled over first!

Heavy fines for those that cause accidents are fine.but how do you prove it?

A sticky problem, no doubt.
