I have no experience with either so can not comment.

You might receive different views regarding this. There are many discussions pertaining to which is the best. The best is in the eye of the beholder, what ever works for you.

These links are reviews from cnet.

Internet Security

I agree with the other reply in that there are plenty of forums, discussion boards, etc. that cover this very issue. However, I will throw in my two-bits and please keep in mind that this my personal opinion based solely upon my own research and conclusions.

My McAfee update subscription was expiring in January of this year so the issue of continuing with them or looking elsewhere became relevant. In the end, and after many, many hours of research, I opted to leave McAfee (who I had been with for at least 6-years) for the latest internet security suite from Zone Alarm.

I had been using their free and then pay-for firewall application for a few years and was always very happy with the product. Between reviews and such I had read online (including one from my Consumer Reports online subscription) the Zone Alarm suite came highly recommended. For me it was an easy migration as the GUI was already familiar because it was relatively the same as with their pay-for firewall application.

Subsequent to purchasing the Zone Alarm suite they updated the virus scanning module with one done by Kapersky, who was my second choice. By purchasing the Zone Alarm product I was getting their very good firewall and Kapersky's most excellent anti-virus application.

As I continue to use XP Pro I do not know if there is a version of ZoneAlarm this is compatible with Vista, but I know they were working on the matter.

Regardless of what you decide, best of luck making a decision as it's never easy.

by pshumsker - 5/21/07 11:04 AM In reply to: Need help with a internet security for my pc by uruguay3000

i used the security suite 6.0 the spyware function and add blocking isn't the best. it's fast and doesn't slow down your computer.

Both are very good. Kaspersky rated slightly higher on the A-V defense scale, but the A-V part of Kaspersky is too "application intrusive" in my experience. (This is not the same as resource hungry, which K is not). I would go for Bit Defender on balance.

Regarding the Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6

by Davengeorge - 5/21/07 2:08 PM In reply to: Need help with a internet security for my pc by uruguay3000

I read the June PC World article "Virus Stoppers", which rated the Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 as No.1 ans best-buy. I downloaded the 30 day free trial program and installed it on one of my computers, a Dell Dimension 3000. After restarting my computer all h... broke loose. I have been a PC guru for many years and have seen all kinds of crazy things happen, but never anything like this. My computer just simply went bonkers. Error after error, windows would not work, alt-F4 did nothing, the old standby Ctrl-Alt-Del did nothing. Everything was locked up and nothing I did would free it up. I rebooted several times with different results each time, all bad. I finally had to boot into DOS, and erase all traces of Kaspersky, at least all I could find. Then I rebooted into Windows XP and tried to reload Norton, my regular anti-virus. It would not load and would not say why. I cleaned my register of all mentions of kaspersky, erased anything that was remotely connected with it and still no luck. I finally tried to reload windows XP on the C drive and start all over. Guess what? It would not load, showing some errors that I had never before seen and really didn't understand. After much trial and error I was only able to reload windows XP after switching out the C drive with the D drive. Windows loaded no problem, after which I salvaged as much as I could from the now D drive and then completely reformatted it. So far its working but I sure don't want to go thru that again. All I can tell you is beware and backup all the files you don't want to lose before loading Kaspersky.

I am a computer tech with many years experience building, troubleshooting and repairing all kinds of PCs. I have never seen anything like this before and I can't explain what went wrong. My best guess is that I run several anti-spyware and anti-malware programs along with anti-rootkit programs and Kaspersky apparently didn't like that at all. OH well, live and learn.

Be warned, and backup, just in case

Too many anti-virus

by moccoo - 5/22/07 1:28 PM In reply to: Regarding the Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 by Davengeorge

I went through the same thing a year ago.I was testing too many anti-viruses and anti-spyware programs.I uninstalled all of them and went to one at a time.I found that all programs get old and I either update or uninstall for a newer version.I am disabled and stay at home and I do a lot of updating, testing and downloading a lot of programs(one at a time).I feel bad for the working person who has little time to spend on-line.I use Secunia as a short cut to tell me if my programs are out of date.At SECUNIA they have a software inspector that checks out all my programs.A great tool.MIKE

Twas Probably "YE OLDE NORTON Hooks".

by Glenn51 - 5/26/07 3:10 AM In reply to: Regarding the Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 by Davengeorge

I had Norton system works on my machine many years ago, probably 3 or4 to be exact. I forget which version it was but I had a botched upgrade to their own (NORTON) program. I tried to completely unistall it but couldn't get it,their program to uninstall or the newest one to install. Their program kept telling me to uninstall the previous version, which the upgrade was supposed to do. To make a long story shorter, after many days of trying, I finally went to Nortons website and found a utility, Theirs, to completely remove any Norton tracks. I was finally able to complete the upgrade.
Since that time I uninstalled Norton and then switched to Zone Labs Internet Security Suite and I am extremely satisfied. I thought I was rid of Norton completely. I was trying different Registry cleanup programs and one of them, I don't recall which one, popped up and said oops we found references to Norton. At the time, I wasn't using Norton for several months and had used THE NORTON UNINSTALL PROGRAM.
In a nutshell I'm sure we all realize that the uninstall programs DON'T REMOVE EVERY LITTLE SHRED OF THE program, but it seems NORTON leaves behind, in my books anyhow, the most! Soooo it was probably the "YE OLDE NORTON HOOKS that caused your problem. I wish the uninstall programs would eradicate ALL TRACES OF THE PROGRAM LIKE IT IMPLIES!!! The install program for any program sure puts info keys in your reistry but all programs when you uninsatall them leaves behind a mess in your registry!

I have no experience with either of them. But why pay when you can go to cnet and use their downloads and get something for free?

If you don't mind paying for security software, my vote goes to Kaspersky. They update the fastest, and Kaspersky also offers rescue disk creation. Many of today's Trojans are blended with viruses to infect critical files in the system32 folder. If this happens, you might not be able to restore these files without clean copies (of course a repair install could do the trick).

Ever since McAfee added IPS (Intrusion Prevention Systems) to all their firewall products in response to the fall '06 botnet attacks, I have gone back to the free AOL Safety and Security Center. In several months (knock on wood), nothing has touched me, or any of my contacts who installed it. :D Get it here, if you're interested: http://daol.aol.com/safetycenter

If you do go for Kaspersky A-V, Steganos A-V is much cheaper in some countries and uses the Kaspersky engine. It is exactly the same A-V program in the UK.

AOL Security

by peeskieeskie - 5/26/07 7:54 AM In reply to: opinions by santuccie

I agree AOL security center could take care of most needs and problems, but since i "upgraded" to Vista Home Premium, AOL reports in their link that a Vista compatable version will soon be available, check back soon. Anybody know or have you heard when?

This does make things a bit difficult. There is one name I'm familiar with, from whom you can get all three components for free...PC Tools. Here are links to all three, if you're interested:

firewall: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

antivirus: http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/

antispyware: http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html?hl=en&gl=us

In the Google Pack you will find Spyware Doctor Starter Edition. It is a cut-down, free version of a class-leading, commercial product. It does not monitor memory, and there are several other features it omits, but it does include the new "File Guard," which will hopefully help to protect critical system files against some of today's dangerous new threats.

There are a lot of other temptations in the Google Pack as well, from which you can pick and choose by clicking the "Add or remove software" hyperlink at the bottom-right of the page. Decisions I leave to you, though I'd advise you to resist any temptation to download Norton Security Scan. It's ONLY an on-demand scanner, and I understand the updates are only good for six months. Good luck!

I use Windows Live OneCare

by 2gwm - 5/21/07 4:56 PM In reply to: Need help with a internet security for my pc by uruguay3000

This program was free after rebates and I have a 3 user license with is great for the rest of my computers.

I am running Vista Ultimate and I find that OneCare runs seamlessly with Vista and I don't have to worry about any system conflicts.

I know I have read some not-so-hot reviews of OneCare, but I haven't had any problems. It updates without any problems, backs up my computer, and had kept me free from viruses and spyware/adware perfectly!

Just my humble opinion if you are a Vista user....

live one care for xp-sp2

by moccoo - 5/22/07 1:43 PM In reply to: I use Windows Live OneCare by 2gwm

I had this for my xp-sp2 untill I got an email from Microsoft to download the new version.I deleated the message and went online with Windows Live One Care to install the new version. The worst thing I ever did.I had no problems with the old version but the new one,I couldn't update or get help online.I couldn't activate my account, which I paid for for one year.I uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times with no success.I called them on the phone, and with two technicians, they couldn't help me.I got rid of it but kept Windows Defender. If you have any problems with Windows Live One Care,do what I did.Get rid of it but keep Windows Defender.MIKE
