Panasonic TH-42PH9UK or Pioneer PDP-4270HD?? (same price)

by seattlecharlie - 5/23/07 8:25 AM

I'm facing quite the dilemma right now. I can't decide between the Panasonic professional series TH-42PH9UK or the Pioneer PDP-4270HD.

After buying a stand and a couple HDMI inputs for the panasonic, it is essentially the same price as the pioneer. (I have found both of them on sale in different places). Both TVs are members of highly rated plasma families, have excellent picture quality and have their own strongholds: The Panasonic is praised for its minimalist looks, professional quality, and I can get it with a free 5 year warranty. Pioneer's panels receive rave reviews and this set includes a tuner, a stand, multiple HDMI inputs, etc. I know the Panasonic would be the enthusiast's choice and you dont really need a tuner because you'll probably have the comcast HD-DVR box and I'll always have a stereo/receiver for audio.

Please help me decide! Are the pioneer's included extra's a better package or should I go with the panasonic?

Try another one maybe... Vizio

Before you jump at these two you might want to consider the television from the most successful company in the last two years, which is the VIZIO. (www.vizio.com) Price is great and quality kicks butt.

If you are determined to choose between the two the Panasonic 4270 would be my choice. Pioneer's quality doesn't really transend to the flat-screen technology. The Panasonic is awesome with picture quality and reliability.

Thanks for the advice. I like that about the Panasonic: it comes with a 5 year warranty and has so much less that can possibly break inside.

Vizio?

Pioneer and Panasonic are on a whole other level than Vizio. Definitely get either the Pioneer or the Panasonic. Traditionally, Pioneer sets the standard for plasmas under $10,000.

One more Thing...

Just another thought to consider, but generally speaking, most people still watch much more standard definition programming than they do HD programming. Which one of these panels will display SD the best? I really appreciate the help!

I own a TH-42PH9UK and I couldn't be happier. My friend has the 50" model with the SDI card and it is truly awesome!

go w/ the Pioneer. Not that Panny isn't great. But, its a Pioneer. Resale should be easier and better, I would imagine, if that ever became an issue as well. People don't know about commercial models, but they sure know Pioneer....

Decision

So, I went ahead and got the Panasonic. I realized I couldn't go wrong with either panel. In the end, the free 5 year warranty and minimalist looks of the Panasonic swayed me (also, it ended up being slightly cheaper, about $100). My hopes with the Panasonic are that it will be a tv that can grow with me; and, if I ever move into a place where I can mount it on the wall, it would look much better on the wall than the Pioneer. Also, I've realized I'm never going to have a set-up without a DVR, I love my TiVo- so not having a tuner on the Panasonic isn't a problem at all. And again, a free 5 year warranty! Thanks for the help.

Hey do you mind telling me the store where you bought it from. I remember at the end of last year, I was posting all the time for others' benefit about this place in Seattle that sold commercial grade Pannys with a free 5-yr bonus that expired on New Year's Day. Thing is I can't remember the name of the website. I bet its the same as where you got yours....

I have a couple of friends looking for a new tv..... thanks.

Congrats!

The Internet

by seattlecharlie - 5/24/07 9:56 PM In reply to: Congrats Charlie by jostenmeat

I wanted to get it from web-retailer in Seattle called Visual Apex (and I could have picked it up and avoided freight charges), but they were all sold out of the 42" model and a 50" is just too big for me. So once I finally decided on the Panasonic I searched the web looking for it and actually found it in several other places for about $150-$200 less. However, it took calling about 5 places because most of the retailers who advertised having it in stock actually did not have it. Also, I wanted one that would be shipped in from the West coast and not back east. I finally found it in stock at MacMall.com which is based out of Southern California. They had it for $969 plus freight. A good deal in my opinion. All I need to buy now are a stand and an HDMI module. I cant wait for it to come!

PS: If Visual Apex had it in stock I would have bought it from them, they were extremely helpful and knowledgeable over the phone and I intend to give them business in the future.
