Olympus 3.2 megapixel and a Canon 30D + 580EX flash.

by Scorpioso69 - 5/30/07 12:27 AM In reply to: Canon S3 IS by dmdm

When my son was born 5 years ago I got the Olympus, mainly because it was cheap and had a sliding cover over the lens, so it was in essence kiddy-proof!

But it got stolen middle of last year in a burglary at my house.

I had wanted a decent Canon SLR for a LOOOOOOONG time, so I decided now was the time to take the plunge, I took out a LOAN! and got the Canon 30D 8.2 megapixel, 5 frames/sec, with the 17 - 85mm IS USM lens (much better than the stock 18 - 55mm lens, and the 580EX flash as well.

Have enjoyed it for nearly a year now, and love it to bits. Quick to setup, excellent at high ISO's, and yes, I have been is a situation where my sister's D70s with 3 fr/sec was slow and my 5fr/sec made a significant difference. Want to get the 70 - 300mm IS USM lens, very expensive, but from what I've seen worth it. Have friends with the normal 70 - 300 4.6, and it's not impressive at all. Luckily RAW mode allows one to tweak the brightness and contrast and sharpness significantly, but I'd prefer a lens that gives great shots straight away.

canon a540

by rabbit6_99 - 5/15/07 9:13 PM In reply to: What brand of digital camera do you own? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have a Canon A540 digital camera that I use quite often. Even though I like to shoot film best, I also use my digital camera and enjoy using it.

I own a Sony Cyber-shot 10.1 mega pixel and it is excellent, I am sure that it is able to do more than I realize. But I am very satisfied. It takes beautiful pictures.

Konika Minolta Z6 and Olympus D500

by jijo272 - 5/17/07 2:59 PM In reply to: What brand of digital camera do you own? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I use the Konika Minolta Z6 the most and find it works very good. Sometimes I go back to "old faithful" as I call my Olympus D500. It's a very good camera - but very slow.

Sony

by anand_dh - 5/19/07 12:38 AM In reply to: What brand of digital camera do you own? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm a big sony fan. I have three now and all of them are Sony

I got the Sony DSC-F505V back in 2000. Thats a great camera. It is only 3.3 megapixels but at that time that was the highest I think. I finaly got a new one in 2006 the Sony DSC-H2 which is again a great camera - 6 MP and 12x optical zoom and great pictures. I recently got a Sony DSC-T100, this one was just too good to be true at that size. I got it because of the size - I can carry it around everywhere.

Samsung S730

by kjunprncez - 5/19/07 12:28 PM In reply to: What brand of digital camera do you own? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I don't take that many digital pictures and had a 35mm film camera that did the job for years, but I finally took the plunge and bought the Samsung on a professional photographer's word. She told me that she keeps this particular camera in her purse for pictures when she's out and doesn't want to lug around her professional equipment. I love it and the pictures are really good. The price was definitely right and for the hobbyist or normal birthday party pictures, this little camera performs well.

NIKON

by premnas - 5/19/07 2:31 PM In reply to: What brand of digital camera do you own? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have two Nikon D200's and a Nikon D70 with an assortment of lenses. While the D200's take great wedding/glamour pictures I find the D70 is the better choice when doing sports or nature photography when having to set up for a picture quickly or risk losing the opportunity.

What brand of digital camera do you own?

by greggc15 - 5/20/07 6:25 AM In reply to: What brand of digital camera do you own? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My wife and I both have Olympus cameras. I own an SP-350 and am mostly happy with it.
My only complaints would be about the lack of an image stabilizer for taking photos, and the cost of the batteries it uses. Oddly enough, it has image stabilization for the movie function, just not for photos.

My wife has an Olympus Stylus 710, which is small, and easily fits into her purse (even in the case I got to go with it), and it is weather resistant. She got it last week as a Mother's Day gift from my daughters, and I.
Her camera has image stabilization for both photos and movies. Another feature the Stylus 710 has, that my SP-350 doesn't is a rechargeable battery pack. My SP-350 uses rather expensive CRV-3 batteries. She hasn't used it much yet, having only had it for one week. But so far it seems to be a decent camera and will probably suit her needs well.

SONY DSC-P1

by jizwiz - 5/21/07 2:58 AM In reply to: What brand of digital camera do you own? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

First digital camera I ever bought and till have to this very day. One big problem is that I never received a recall notice that the connection to recharge the battery was faulty. Now if I need to take a pic I need to hook the charger up in order to have power. This was probably the biggest waste of money Ive ever spent.

Unrepairable Olympus C-730 Ultra Zoom

by kyeagle - 6/2/07 10:25 PM In reply to: What brand of digital camera do you own? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I bought an Olympus C-730 Ultra Zoom in December 2002. Earlier this year it started putting purple and black in the viewfinder and pictures. I found a service advisory at the Olympus web site about my problem and it stated the camera was eligible for repairs.

I called the support line and the bottom line after talking to a supervisor, was... sorry, but they no longer had parts available to repair my camera. But they offered a trade-in program. They described a camera comparable to mine, but the price they offered to sell me a replacement for was the slightly higher than I could buy it for on the web. I was told that they have no control over what others sell their products for.

End result.... I paid over $400 for a camera that lasted 4 years and 3 months. A camera the factory said had problems. But one they could not repair or offer a replacement at a REASONABLE cost.

When I purchased Olympus, I felt the product would be of good quality and last me until I was ready to upgrade. But I was wrong!

Buy at your own risk!

Canon S1IS - the worst I had

by brunole - 6/5/07 12:19 AM In reply to: What brand of digital camera do you own? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

A great tele lens and a clever rotating LCD panel, but nothing else - under average colour restitution, and appalling macro capabilities and manual focus. I could not believe this 500$ camera, highly recommended by reviews, could be so inefficient. It will need a big effort from Canon to sell me again a camera. Now happy with a Lumix TZ1 !

Sony DSC-N1

by F_demon - 6/16/07 5:35 AM In reply to: What brand of digital camera do you own? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Proud and happy owner of a Sony DSC-N1. It's 8 mexapixel, has the possibility of manual setting and a 3 inch touchscreen.

A nice tight good looking camera, that takes great pictures, but does have it's flaws like any camera.

I am very happy with the touchscreen, because it enables me to quickly manually alter settings like exposure, diafragma and shutter speed.
