No Problems Here..But...

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 5/17/07 8:04 AM In reply to: lol by leeroybrowwn

...you'll need to make sure the boot order is correct in the BIOS so ANY boot disc will load. There is also a possibility the "Native SATA" support selection needs to be disabled on some BIOS versions as well.

Hope this helps.

Your question about the Recovery Discs has already been answered once.

Do it.. After wiping with Dban, you should be able to load XP using those discs and following all the various instructions in this thread.

Hope this helps.

SATA problems

by tomyka08 - 9/29/07 9:04 PM In reply to: No Problems Here..But... by Grif Thomas Moderator

Hi, i am having problems, i have been reading the comments for about 2 days now, the only problem is that i can't find the native SATA support part in my BIOS.
I have a dv9520tx, could anyone help please?

It May Not Be There...

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 9/30/07 8:06 AM In reply to: SATA problems by tomyka08

And if that's the case, then you wipe the drive with a program like Dban which should eliminate all issues with drive recognition, then install the SATA drivers during the XP install. (Make sure to create your Recovery Discs BEFORE wiping the drive.

You don't mention which processor you have, Intel or AMD, but the AMD machines have a different BIOS than Intel and as such, must be handled differently.

Hope this helps.

reboot computer with xp disc in it, hit f12 and select boot from cdrom. you are still going to have to find all drivers, not easy, still working on mine.

Success reverting HP dv9207us to XP

by DaveAtFraud - 5/21/07 7:59 AM In reply to: also downgrading by chkm8

Just a quick note that will hopefully get indexed. I was able to revert to XP on my wife's HP dv9207us. The first step was to turn off "Native SATA support" in the BIOS since XP couldn't find the hard drive with this on. Once past this hurdle all went well until it was time to configure the system at which point I discovered that XP didn't support either the wired or wireless NICs. I was able to find the driver for the wireless NIC (Intel Pro Wireless 3945 ABG) which got me connected to my AP.

Once I had LAN connectivity I was able to work my way through the finding the remaining drivers and software. The wired LAN card is also Intel but a PCI-Express 1000. The only part that was tricky was the sound card. I tried installing the Conexant driver listed earlier in this thread but it wouldn't install. I then installed the Windows UAA package which then recognized the sound device and grabbed and installed the appropriate driver from somewhere.

The system appears to be fully functional with XP although I didn't attempt to set up the web-cam or the TV tuner. My wife will be using this system at work so she doesn't need these. I should hear from her later today as to whether reverting to XP solved the compatibility problems she was having with software she needs to do her job (probably).

Cheers,
Dave

Need help.....

by alu4e - 5/21/07 5:14 PM In reply to: Success reverting HP dv9207us to XP by DaveAtFraud

I have the HP pavilion DV6000 series.
I'm planning to remove the vista and install the XP instead because the softwares that I use for my study does not run correctly on the vista.

I think I have A PL ATA HD, do I have to disable the SATA in the BIOS.
Also, do I have to remove the partition that has the recovery files before installing the XP?
Thanks.

No to both...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 5/21/07 5:26 PM In reply to: Need help..... by alu4e

* A PATA hard drive actually simplifies things since you don't need to worry about the possibility of a SATA driver being required during installation. There's no need to adjust the BIOS settings.

* No, you can leave the hidden recovery partition right where it is if you like. You should, however, burn the recovery DVDs so that you can reinstall Vista down the road.

Hope this helps,
John

From Vista to XP on HP dv6000t

by the2cooks - 5/22/07 9:37 AM In reply to: No to both... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I have a dv6000t and like many other dvXXXX owners I was greeted with a high-pitched noise when I started using my brand new Vista laptop. HP posted a tech doc (http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/docDisplay.do?docLocale=en&docId=emr_na-c00965412-1) saying to update your BIOS and turn off CPU C4 function. That barely reduced the noise. Other users were saying to install XP and you will completely get rid of the noise. I did the later and it worked. I then found out through the help of this thread that the noise is not related to Vista but to the Intel SATA AHCI controller. During the install, I had to disable SATA native support. XP installed with the Intel SATA controller vs the SATA AHCI controller. After installing, I did some research on how to re-enable SATA native support in the BIOS and came across this thread. One of the posts led me to a link that showed how to re-install the SATA AHCI controller in XP using WinRAR and MagicISO to extract the files because the HP SoftPaq was requiring a floppy which I did not have. As soon as I installed the AHCI controller and enabled SATA native support in the BIOS the NOISE was back. It really got loud when I upgraded the Ricoh controller driver which I think is tied to the SATA controller. The SATA AHCI controller gives some performance boost using command queueing but nothing worth the peace of not having to listen to that annoying sound. Can anyone relate? All the other devices are working in XP. I did not bother installing the driver for HP QuickLaunch/QuickPlay because I did not want that feature. After running the Driver Scan at driveragent.com, the only out of date driver is the Ricoh controller, not a big deal, and my Photosmart 7850 driver. I may try Vista in a year. Hopefully by then HP will either recall my laptop or come out with a driver fix for this SATA controller. Until then, my ears are thanking me.

alu4e, Please Check Again...

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 5/22/07 1:04 PM In reply to: Need help..... by alu4e

Most of the DV6000 series use a SATA hard drive.. If it's PATA, then you don't need to disable the SATA support..

You'll need to check your BIOS to see if the "Native SATA support" is listed. Usually, of those using an Intel processor, you'll need to disable SATA support in the BIOS.. For those using an AMD processor, it may not be there.. Either way, you'll want to look.. Generally, if you don't disable SATA support in the BIOS, then the XP CD won't find the hard drive and install.

Personally, I recommend wiping the hard drive completely so the XP installation will work correctly. It may not be required in some situations but I prefer it that way. Nothing from Vista remains to clog up the system.. BEFORE doing that, you can create Recovery discs of the Vista setup which will work instead of the partition.. IF you ever decide to go back to the Vista operating system on the computer, use the Recovery discs.

Here's a link to my post above where I reverted my DV6205us to XP..

Thank God, I'm now running XP

by alu4e - 5/22/07 5:34 PM In reply to: alu4e, Please Check Again... by Grif Thomas Moderator

I'm writing this from my DV6025US notebook running XP PRO/SP2.
Thank you Grif.
But just to mention that, I didn't use the DBAN software and didn't follow the order to install the drivers mentioned in another posting.
I disabled the SATA from the BIOS, as you mentioned and used the XP CD to delete the partitions and format the HD.
But should I enable the SATA again?
Thanks again.

It's Your Choice But It May Not Be Possible...

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 5/23/07 9:57 AM In reply to: Thank God, I'm now running XP by alu4e

...unless you installed the SATA drivers with XP.. Most often, if you haven't installed the SATA drivers during the XP install and you try to re-enable "SATA support" in the BIOS, you'll get a blue screen after you reboot.. ON the few machines I tried it, it didn't work.. Still, in my case, I wiped the drives with DBAN. IN your case, you didn't.. Maybe there's a difference.

And since I find no difference between having the SATA support enabled vs disabled, I leave it disabled.

Hope this helps.

Grif

I'll leave it disabled.

by alu4e - 5/24/07 4:00 PM In reply to: It's Your Choice But It May Not Be Possible... by Grif Thomas Moderator

In that case I'll leave it disabled.
The machine is so far so good.
Installed all the softwares and it is running great.
Thanks again.
