It will be a few years before any of that stuff hit's the market.
HDMI is just a transport protocol like USB and Firewire. John

Ben hit the nail right on the head in his post on

HDMI improved our theater experience greatly, and oliviated the need for multiple cables going into the back of your display, right on. So why go 1.2 to 1.3? Sure I suppose "Deep Color" is neat and all, havn't seen it personally, but the aspect that sold me on 1.3 is the "lossless" codecs TrueHD and DTS-HD. If i spent all this money to better my viewing expierence why would i not want to better my listening expierence as well. 7.1 channels of dicrete high def audio is enough reason for me to consider a 1.3 reciever over a 1.2 reciever. But not everyone is an audiophile so to each their own.

Is 1.3 cable really needed for 1.3 equipped equipment?

We have just purchased a 73" Mitsubishi 734 series HDTV that purports to have "deep color" and recommends, in its owner's manual, that category 2 HDMI cable be used when the source is a 1.3 source. I have questioned tech people at the cable company, the set-box manufacter, review the HDMI website and spoke to numerous sales people and reviewed numerous posts: Please comment on whether any or all of these items are valid:
1. Re: HDMI site: The HDMI site's FAQ responses are a bit evasive. ( I admit that I am struggling to understand any of this) It appears that any HDMI cable will handle 1080p ( as all since 1.0 have handled everything.) Speed will not be compromised in lengths under 2 meters so category 1 can handle anything category 2 can handle. "Deep color" is color up to and in excess of what the human eye can see. The do not deny 1.,or other cable less than 1.,can handle "deep color." 1.3 builds for future only.
2. Re: Cable Company and Set-Box company: Both say any HDMI cable have excess capacity and can handle anything. They do not send "deep color" signal and boxes are not 1.3 equipped anyway. Cable compnay recommends using co-axal cable and not using HDMI as it is a waste of money. Set Box co. says that unless you are gaming, forget about 1.3.

3. Sales people: All HDMI cable can handle 1.3, so don't worry If FIOS from Verizon comes to town, 1.3 may become useful as they will send with state of the art deep color, sound etc.

So, please, let me know if I can use regular HDMI cable with my HDTV after I get my Blue-Ray and FIOS installed, in the near future.

Thanks so much! Robin

HDMI cable doesn't have to be fussed about. WalMart, Sam's Club or online sources such as monoprice.com will do the job very competently for you. Pay no heed to some claim pitched to sell you a long mark up (fat profit) set for one or two hundred dollars. Don't even go there.
