How do I fix this? I'm a newbie and have read to re-install but unclear if that is the proper way, etc. when I search *.wab, there were files listed......
It would help if we knew your operating system... And the EXACT error message you're receiving would be great too.
It's always best to have a backup copy of the address book for emergency situations.. (I save mine as a .csv file) If you've got a backup of the address book and you don't have a lot of important e-mail messages, then uninstalling Outlook Express and reinstalling it should work.. After the reinstall, you can "import" the backup copy.
Hope this helps.

I do not have a backup of my address book. I do have important emails on my system. Do I have to reinstall....where do I even begin
Also, when I search files and folders I do have a .wab and address book file if that helps. I can open OE but can't create, reply or send and receive......
Open OE, then click on "File" in the upper left, choose "Export", select "Address Book". When the next page loads, click on "Comma Separated Values", then click on the "Export" button. In the next window, in the "Save Exported File As", click on the "Browse" button, make sure it shows the "My Documents" folder, then type in a name like "MyContacts", then click on the "Save" button. The path and name should now be listed in the Export window so click on "Next". At the next window, place a CHECK mark in those fields that you want to save.. You can also deselect those items that are not important to save, then click on "Finish". (You might want to write down those selections that you make.. When you "Import" them to OE after the reinstall, it should ask you similar information during the import.. Writing it down makes it easy to CHECK the same boxes to import correctly.
Once you're done, then open the "My Documents" folder, then open the "MyContacts.csv" file and make sure there is data there.

As to saving the important messages, there are a number of ways to do it depending on how much mail you're got.. If there are only a few, you can save individual messages by opening the message, click on "File", choose "Save As", then save the message as a "Mail [*.eml]" file to your desktop or special folder where they can be opened an read later. If there are lots of messages, then backing up the messages using the information in the link below is best.
How to back up and to restore Outlook Express data
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670
When you've got everything backed up, then it's time to uninstall, then reinstall OE.. Click on Start-Control Panel, then double click on the "Add or Remove Programs" icon.. When that opens, click on the "Add/Remove Windows Components" on the left side.. When that opens, scroll down and UNCHECK the box next to "Outlook Express", then click on "Next", then follow the prompts to uninstall OE..
Now restart the computer and follow the same procedures to RECHECK the box and reinstall Outlook Express.. YOu may need the Windows XP disc to reinstall OE. In some cases, you can also use the full XP SErvice Pack 2 installation file from the link below to reinstall Service Pack 2 which will also reinstall Outlook Express.. (It's a large download, about 266 MB, so you'll need a broadband internet connection to do it.. Once it's downloaded to your desktop, you might want to burn a copy to a CD if you ever want to use it again.)
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help...when I tried to export it said "Error Exporting Address Book"
...Open the address book and write down the information? If it's not too extensive, it shouldn't take long to write down all the e-mail addresses and names. It may be you're only recourse if it won't export..
By the way, have you scanned the computer with some good antispyware tools? If not, please download, install, update, then run a full system scan using the link below. Such malware can cause issues with e-mail programs.:
Ewido/AVG Antispyware 7.5 Tool
Hope this helps.

Grif,
I am scanning and now have found my address book in the C:document and setting folder...Can I export someway now to get those names back in the oe and get that up and running?
...and which address book did you find in the C:\documents and setting folder? Is it a .wab file or the .csv file you tried to create earlier?
If you haven't uninstalled OE yet, then the address book you've found is still probably corrupted.. It's probably the bad one you're having issues with. So although you "might" be able to import or export it, you wouldn't want to..
If you already have uninstalled and reinstalled, then you'll need to know whether the .wab file is your "old" address book, which contains the addresses from before, or your "new" address book which is probably blank. If it's the old one, you may or may not want to import the corrupted file..
Hope this helps.
