Stupid question about HDMI 1.3

by Theguywhowannaknow - 5/14/07 6:29 AM

I know i will sound stupid with my question but i dont mind as i wanna know about HDMI vs HDMI 1.3....

The new upcoming recievers from Onkyo are coming with HDMI 1.3. Are those the same size of HDMI? I mean... if i have a HD tv with HDMI (so far only Samsung is having HDMI 1.3 right?) can i plug them to this receiver? If not, what is the deal with those receivers if we cant hook them up with the present HD tv's? Are those new receivers good ONLY if you have a TV that is set with HDMI 1.3?

I plan to buy the whole set (HD TV and good receiver) this summer and i am confused... I am looking at Pioneer PRO-FHD1 as price will continue to drop with the upcoming 2007 lines and i am looking hard at Onkyo receivers. I just bought the dvd player OPPO DV-981HD for upscaling and the KEF KHT 3005 speakers but i need to know what to do about the tv. Do i really need a HDMI 1.3 on it or not?

thanks and sorry for probably asking such an easy question....

HDMI 1.3 is backwards compatible spec, but physical sizes...

by MultiMuse - 5/14/07 7:14 AM In reply to: Stupid question about HDMI 1.3 by Theguywhowannaknow

Facts say the HDMI 1.3 is a backwards compatible spec, but the pics show that the new Mini connector "OPTION" is physically smaller, and converter cables or adapters would be required to mate up the 2 different physical sizes, if a device doesn't have both size ports built in. That's no biggie problem, since we already went through the same thing with both USB and fire-wire port/plug/cables/adapters, matching up the varying sizes between various devices. I imagine same scenario for these new ports.

Not to worry, the HDMI 1.3a ia the half size plug for

by NM_Bill - 5/14/07 3:40 PM In reply to: HDMI 1.3 is backwards compatible spec, but physical sizes... by MultiMuse

camcorders. etc. The half size will just fit in one side leaving the unused space on the other side.

Mr Guy DONT STRESS 1.3 ITS A JOKE

by stewart norrie - 5/14/07 10:24 AM In reply to: Stupid question about HDMI 1.3 by Theguywhowannaknow

Also dont get sucked into buying an amp with h.d.m.i. switching just run all your vidio straight to the t.v and audio straight to the a/v/amp WHY? sometimes h.d.m.i. switching amps will not pass thrua satellite or cable signal As far as 1.3. goes once you see the steller picture you get from your satellite or cable h.d system you will see 1.3. cannot look any better than that no way it should look 70 m.m. quality and dont forget your blue ray player ha ha I have one and its to clear beyond belief good luck stewee

i feel more confused but thanks to all the help i got so far

by Theguywhowannaknow - 5/14/07 11:09 AM In reply to: Mr Guy DONT STRESS 1.3 ITS A JOKE by stewart norrie

thanks to all for quick response but i feel more confused now ???? With the hard earn money i am gonna invest in that home theater i wanna do it right as i dont plan to change it for the next 10 years or so... If people touted so much about the coming of 1.3... Satellite or cable providers arent yet sending real 1080P yet but it is coming for sure. It is sure i will buy a capable 1080P HDTV but i was wondering if i had to wait until those ones will be coming with 1.3... Now, you are telling the receiver is not that important... Oh boy i am a rookie here.... :-(

MR GUY CALM DOWN DONT STRESS

by stewart norrie - 5/14/07 1:04 PM In reply to: i feel more confused but thanks to all the help i got so far by Theguywhowannaknow

And dont worry about the new bells ans whistles coming down the road its all b.s. Hi def has come to a point of perfection and is mostly standerized and 1080I is going to stay that way everything broadcast these days is either 720, or 1080I both formats will give you a movie theater quality picture that cant be beat If you lust for a theater quality system then buy the biggest display size you can afford add your d.v.d. player and hi-def satellite system a good $250 a/v/ amp and for a speaker system that you will love for the rest of your life spend $2500 on a sweet 5.1 speaker system anything more is just overkill. I have a 72" d.l.p. set along with the new blue ray player a sweet Denon amp and a $2500 Atlantic technology speaker system and I have been in hi-def heaven for 2 years no need to upgrade anything no matter what comes out in the future its not going to do a thing to improve on a set up like that believe me please once you throw in the new Casino Reoyal on your new Blue ray player you will be thrilled to pieces stewe

hdmi 1.1-1.3

by waveacle - 6/29/07 8:19 PM In reply to: Mr Guy DONT STRESS 1.3 ITS A JOKE by stewart norrie

hdmi 1.3 carrys video and sound, hdmi 1.1 carrys video and no sound, same size plugs but the port is fully wired in 1.3 configuration! I use the optical output from cable box and oppo v971h dvd player into pioneer amp for digital audio. The pioneer has hdmi 1.1 for video only!Use audio coax into tv to use tv speakers!

Post 10 of 20

that is absolutely incorrect

by jostenmeat - 6/29/07 8:35 PM In reply to: hdmi 1.1-1.3 by waveacle

1.1 carries audio as well

DVI, on the other hand, will not carry audio.

I've posted comments in a couple of similar threads within the last month, but here's a basic list of most popular new things available with 1.3 (that aren't possible with previous versions):

- capable of handling DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD audio signals
- bandwidth capacity increased to 10 Gbps
- support for DeepColor video
- support for 2560x1440 progressive-scan (1440p) video

Here are a few threads which may be of interest:

I would suggest researching the audio codecs and DeepColor. Those are really the two main players in HDMI 1.3. If you can't make heads or tails of it, I can explain it to you, but there are plenty of resources available.

I'm a sound guy more than a video guy (though it's a tough call), so for me the audio codecs are WAY more important than DeepColor. I predict (maybe incorrectly) that DeepColor will not become a mainstream thing, at least not for a few years (I mean, think of all the folks who already have purchased an HDTV.... 99.99% don't have HDMI 1.3, and therefore no DeepColor; after dropping several thousand dollars on a tv, I doubt they're going to be eager to upgrade just for DeepColor.

Anyway, to answer the questions posted in your first message:
- HDMI ports and cables (the Standard size) are all backwards compatible, so even components with different versions can talk to each other without problems.

- Right now, the Onkyos look to be the receivers to beat in terms of value and features. It is certainly in your best interest to buy a 2007 model (the model number will be TX-SRxx5) if you want to get the most out of HD media (such as Blu-Ray and HD-DVD), particularly sound. The new Yamahas seem to be short on features, but they do make good gear, and I expect the new Denons to be up-to-date with HDMI 1.3, though probably a bit more expensive.

- Do you really NEED HDMI 1.3? That's debatable. But I'm going to go out on a limb here and say yes on the receiver and no on the TV, though you have to be the judge. I think you'll appreciate the audio features, and thus you'll need an appropriate receiver (with HDMI 1.3 and appropriate decoders), such as the new Onkyos. In terms of the TV, If I were getting a new TV now, I definitely wouldn't insist on it having 1.3, especially if it weren't a plasma. But that's just me. HDMI 1.3 won't make the TV display non-DeepColor stuff any better, just like HDMI 1.3 on a receiver won't make standard DVDs sound better; but 1.3 on a receiver will make a significant difference with HD media that has a soundtrack encoded in DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD, particularly with good speakers (and I would say that yours are certainly good enough).

Hope this helps. :)

Best,
Ben

I was leaning on buying the Pioneer Pro-FHD1 and invest on the ONKYO TX-SR605 with it so your thinking i really alike! :-) With the Kef KHT3005 speakers and the OPPO 681, it hink i should be good for awhile!!! Great info thanks!

BEN MY OPINION ONLY

by stewart norrie - 5/14/07 6:28 PM In reply to: - by ..ben

HOG WASH TO DEEP COLOR AND 1.3 I do own the blue ray player hooked up to crappy standard h.d.m.i. ha ha using my old Toshiba 73" d.l.p. set and audio using old optical cable to my Denon 3805 Flat out there is no way that 1.3. and deep color going to make any improvement period It might have better specs but I doubt any one will see or hear any difference at all. Also My old set up will go as hi as d.t.s 7.1 extended. God how good do you want it the dam thing looks as good as 70m.m. film or better rite now what you are stating there is something better than perfect ha ha. Also rite now you can own a sweet home theater system for about starting about $2000 so folks are going to wait for years because they feel they must have deep color and 1.3 STUPID stewee

Post 14 of 20

I agree

by ..ben - 5/16/07 6:24 PM In reply to: BEN MY OPINION ONLY by stewart norrie

I totally agree Stew, I think Deep Color is overrated. My interest in HDMI 1.3 lies almost wholly in the audio. And 1440p... well, we can't even get 1080p broadcasts... Me thinks some people's priorities are a bit out of order. Sure, intellectually, 1440p and DeepColor are interesting, but I question their value. How about fixing all the friggin' HDCP handshake problems first?

Anyway, I'm with you.

Best,
Ben

Yes its like saying you can buy a car rite now that will go 200m.p.h. or wait years for one to go 201 m.p.h I think its a better idea to spend all your hard earned money on speakers To me a awsome speaker system is more inportant thanb anything else in your home theater set up have a nice day all stewee
