What is GSM?

by Gatorned - 5/8/07 6:53 PM

I want to buy a phone (HTC p4000) and after doing some research, i found out theres a GSM version of the unit, called HTC p4350.
What is a GSM (phone) ?
If my phone is now GSM, can I change it to GSM?
So then what version is the p4000?
Whats a CDMA carrier?

What kinda of phone will I need if I want to be able to use it all over the world?

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

So GSM and CDMA are just networks.

Is there anyway to use a CDMA with GSM?

No.

It's a technically different way of communicating.

A layman's comparison: you can't use an AM radio to receive an FM broadcast. You can't use an analog TV to receive a digital broadcast. You can't use a GSM telephone to talk with an CDMA network. You can't use Chinese to communicate with your neighbour. Got the picture?

Is CDMA a older network?
When i go on E-bay i dont see any CMDA phones, just GSM.
Is GSM more common?

In a word, Yes

GSM you can say is more common. The majority of the world uses GSM networks. The majority of CDMA phones / network thrives in the U.S. thanks to Verizon and Sprint. The reason why you see a lot more GSM phones is the fact that they can be used around the world so more people purchase these phones.

I hope that makes sense. I think I confused myself! haha

GSM

Gatorned,

GSM = Global System for Mobile Communications - which uses "TDMA"
TDMA = Time Division Multiple Access
CDMA = Code Division Multiple Access

The two networks use different ways to "share" or "Divide" a single voice channel among many phones at the same time. The sharing reduces cost for carriers and you.

As stated above, Cingular (i.e. ATT) and T-Mobile (US branch of Deutsch Telecom of Germany) are the primary US/Canada GSM carriers - there are a few other smaller carriers (i.e. Rogers).

But MOST carriers in the US and Canada use CDMA. (Sprint, Verizon, Alltel, Sprint).

Also, Japan decided to be even more different so they have a third network type.

So, if you want to use a phone world wide, your best bet is GSM.
CDMA is pretty much limited to North America

As for your phone, HTC is based in Taiwan, so *most* of their products, especially if HTC branded, are GSM. Check their website if unsure (www.htc.com).

Now for my experiences:

I travel extensively to Asia and use Cingular, with an unlocked Cingular 8525 (AKA HTC TyTN). When I get where I am going, I buy a local prepaid SIM card and swap it in. This is MUCH cheaper. For example, in Malasia I buy a card a a small sundry shop in the airport, for 8.5 Ringet - about $2.50. And it comes with 50 min of time. I can buy refills all over for about 2.8 cents per minute - and that includes calls back to the US!! (they use VOIP to keep the cost down).

And, a little known tid bit - Apparently Congress passed a law last year that requires carriers to supply their customers with the code needed to unlock their GSM phones for international use. That is how I got the code for my current phone. My previous phone (Nokia) i had to do on my own as they refused to help - that was a year ago, so apparently the law is real.

Good luck!

GSM info

some already answered but I'll add my piece. GSM is cingular and t-mobile. CDMA is Sprint and Verizon. You can't interchange networks. so you cannot use a cdma phone on gsm. you can't use a gsm phone on cdma. Unlocked phones are gsm phones with no carrier restrictions. in theory, unlocked phones are more useful around the world. say you have an unlocked gsm phone that you use with t-mobile. if you want to switch to cingular and don't want to buy a new phone, just sign up with cingular and put the new sim card in the phone. A SIM card is sorta kinda the "ON" button for GSM phones. the mobile number, messages, contacts are on that card. always make sure the phone you want is compatible on your current network
