I have a multi-boot system. I have Windows XP Home Edition on primary drive and Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 on the slave drive. Recently, when my computer had booted up to the desktop on Windows Media Center, I received this alert: MACE SERVICE could not connect to the ACE Runtime. What is this? It appears that it is a necessary service that needs to connect to the internet but it is being prevented from doing so. I have a suspicion that Norton Anti-Virus 2005 blocks this service, so I uninstalled Norton and I am now giving Microsoft ONECARE a try. After installing ONECARE a prompt appeared indicating that it was giving ACE Runtime permission to access the internet, however the next day I again received the same warning that MACE SERVICE could not connect to the ACE Runtime. Does anyone know how to correct this? Thanks.
I'm getting the same error message. However, I do not use Norton AntiVirus, but I am running Windows XP Media Center. I do run MacAfee AntiVirus and Firewall. I have not discovered a resolution and found your posting with my inital search.
Hi Guys. I am running xp media center 05 with macafee antivirus but using xp firewall. I too found this after coming up against a brickwall as far as diy. I have reinstalled xp but it is still happening. If you find a cure before me please post it? My wife is getting fed up with me always on her pc!
I believe I have found the solution! If you have Windows Media Center Edition 2005 and you are running an ATI graphics card using Catalyst Drivers. After boot up to the desktop you receive this error message: MACE SERVICE cannot connect to the ACE Runtime. My problem was due to Windows Firewall. You will need to open the Firewall application and go to exclusions. You will then need to navigate to the folder which holds the MACE file folder (MACE stands for; Managed Access to Catalyst Environment). Click the MACE folder and add it to the Windows Firewall exclusion list. Reboot your computer and TAA DAA! No more error messages! Let me know if this has helped anyone!
I have tried your solution and it works.
At first time it does't work but i try it second time.
Finally the message Mace could not connect to Ace runtime works.
By the way thanks for your information. But I still does not understand why it happened. I guess it may be because my free edition anti virus is approaching its expiry date. I don't know.
One more thanks.
Bye
Many thank the firewall trick worked no more errors
This diagnosis is completely correct, but I see it a little differently. The firewall is doing its job, keeping unidentified programs from sending your information through the Internet without your permission. The issue, as I see it, is why does your video card need to constantly send information to the Internet? Every hole in your firewall creates one more small attack vector. The fact ATI doesn't allow you to disable this "phone home" behavior is very aggravating.
To chetlynch.
Solution worked like a dream.
Easy to follow instructions and voila! No more very annoying warnings.
Thanks a bunch
Barney
the vsolution that the ace must be added to exceptions list in windows firewall settings is the correct path to error freedom!
I rebuilt my VAIO and it worked fine with the original set up for a week or so. It's just my TV computer and I don't use it for anything other than Videos and Music. After a week, I remembered I needed to update my windows and after 89 security updates from Microsoft I started receiving this error. I tried your solution and the error is no more! Yes, I also have ATI graphics card using Catalyst. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this suggestion .I was just surfing and found this site> This message just started this morning how fornutnate I cam across this site Thank you again. James
This is a component of the ATI Catalyst drivers. Try unistalling your ATI drivers and updating to the latest ATI Catalyst drivers for Media Center (Catalyst version 6.2).
I am up to version 6-8 of the Catalyst Drivers. I tried going to 6-9 and 6-10, but those two cause graphics problem with ROME: Total War. Also tried manually setting exclusions in Norton for various ATI programs. Nothing works. Still getting tee same error message. Symantec has been less than helpful, and ATI's solutions are not solving anything. I do know that if I uninmstall Norton, the problem goes away. But I'm not about to go without antivirus and a firewall. When teh subscription runs out, I'll be trying Zone Alarm's firewall and see if that one works wit ATI.
