Help: What is Draft N (wireless) and USB 2.0 on Apple TV

by defensorfortis - 1/10/07 9:00 AM

Could someone explain to me the wireless N-draft compared to a probable wirelss N standard? Would the N-draft become outdated by the N standard when released?

Also regarding Apple TV, many speculated the USB port on the device could house an external harddrive. Clearly, Steve did not make any announcement of this because it has a 40g hdd built-in. On Apple's website, the USB port is explained for services and diagnosis. So does this mean you cannot hook up an external hdd?

who knows the expandability of the USB port?

it could later offer EyeTV integration, a HD, a mouse and keyboard, who knows.

N is N.

it's been around for at least a year, just not in an official form. it is backward compatible to G, so I can't see it having an issue with any final N draft.

Unlikely you'll get an extra drive through the USB

Because that means that you could bypass the proper DRM channels and load whatever you wanted. As for the Draft N wifi? Nothing special about it other than it is merely an implementation of the new wifi standard which has not been totally ratified by the IEEE yet. It could, in theory, prove to be a mistake if the IEEE discovers security vulnerabilities or other bad stuff and rewrite the standard, possibly rendering all Draft N devices buggy/incomatible/useless. It's unlikely though.

when will it be finalized

Do you or anyone else here know when the N standard is going to be finalized and be set?

I've seen quite a number of products include the hardware, even in laptops.

Thanks

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.11#802.11n

For now I use what's out there such as 802.11g without any fuss. But I might be a little more in tune with what's going on as to security.

If you care,

Leo Laporte and most of the guys on TWiT swear by their 802.11n routers...

Post 8 of 8

they swear by their gigabit ethernet too...

by benanzo - 1/10/07 2:08 PM In reply to: If you care, by Ravensblood

as do I. A well-placed gigabit ethernet cable is better in performance/reliablity/speed speed speed/security, etc. I do like public wifi though.
