CAPTCHA and MySpace

by johnorourke1951 - 5/3/07 9:57 AM

Good Day Buzz Outloud moderators and participants.
It has come to my attention that MySpace is guilty of reprehensible discrimination. MYSPACE and many other sites have now employed the CAPTCHA technology. To review, this is the technology that demands that users key in an immage they are seeing before proceeding with registration of any kind. What's wrong with this? On the surface nothing. Think again about this. When employing CAPTCHA you send the following message to blind and deaf-blind individuals. Stay out of my site and MYSPACE. If you use Braille and speech technology you are in effect unwelcome. This is no different than racial barriers that were present in the 1950's at public accommodation places. CAPTCHA without an alternate means of access says totally blind and deaf-blind individuals are not welcome and not included. CAPTCHA without an alternate means of input is also a violation of ADA and Section 508 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act as well as many state and local government Civil Rights laws. Asking for sighted assistance is also not a solution. CAPTCHA without an alternate is totally unacceptable. By the way Yahoo, that means a workable solution. Just the thoughts of an angry computer user who by the way employs JAWS for Windows as his means of text to screen output.

While you kick CAPTCHA to the curb, you didn't offer any alternative solution.

Telling them to offer such is one thing, but what do you propose?

Put another way is that many will point out something is wrong but the voice or message that will be heard is the one that helps them solve it.

Hi Bob,
I'm not a MYSPACE user however, I neglected to point out one point. Users of this particular site have attempted to contact the management of MYSPACE over this issue of CAPTCHA without success. While there have been attempts to deal with analog solutions around CAPTCHA they have been almost inaudible or they will not function with Braille display devices. In the instance with CAPTCHA in conjunction with Cnet, I received one support desk indicating interest in using an analog solution but no further response. Thanks for the response.

Well, I guess if you are so angry at MySpace, why don't you look them in the eye? Wait, you can't because you can't see. Stinks for you.
