Canon SD700

by lgcincy - 3/4/07 3:33 PM

Why do so few major retailers carry the Canon SD700 either online or in-store? Is this a bad sign?

No....it is not a bad sign.

The SD700 and SD600 were introduced at the same time and since the SD700 has image stabilization and a 4X lens, it cost about $100 more.

Most high volume store will stock the camera the sells the best.

That means the SD600 gets the shelf space.

Then 6 months later, along comes the 7 megapixel SD800IS and stole all the thunder from the SD700.

I imagine all the high volume stores pulled the SD700 and stocked the
SD800IS instead.

I just checked some sample photos from the SD700 and it puts out razor sharp images. Sharper than the SD600.

You may have to look harder to find one, but it will be worth the effort.

Canon makes so many models....sometimes they step on their own toes when it comes to pricing.

SD700 vs SD800

Thank you for the response.

Would the SD800 then be a smarter buy given the extras over the 700?

SD700 - SD800

Here is a link to a look at their specifications side-by-side.

For about $45 to $50 more.....the SD800 offers you one more megapixel and a wide angle lens. 28mm focal length instead of 35mm focal length on the SD700.

The SD800 also has a razor sharp lens.

You will have to decide if it those features are worth the extra money to you.

Although I think all are great cameras (I'm a fan of the SD series), I'd personally go for the SD800 because it has Image Stabilization built into a pocket camera.

I bought the SD700 for a friend and it's a fantastic camera. I got myself the SD750 last week and was not impressed. I couldn't believe the difference! I returned the sd750 and am searching for the SD 700is

Just shy of $300. I got my SD800IS for $250. At 100x crop the image is slightly softer, but I'll take my chances :)
