I've had Cingular in the past, the main problem being dropped calls and not getting service in many areas. I am a 19 yr old college student transferring to either BU or Northeastern in Boston and planning on cancelling my Verizon plan and joining my famils Cingular plan while I'm away at school.
I currently have the Older version of the EnV, and am not pleased anymore with it. The calendar system is terrible, the applications are lagging constantly, and an upgrade now would mean paying market value without a contract. I'm cancelling my Verizon plan and moving to Cingular so I have a few questions and would appreciate feedback.
At school I'll be partaking in internships with companies in and around Boston for extended periods of time. I'll be busy with school, work, etc...I'd like a smartphone/PDA to keep track of my contacts, a nice calendar system to plan out my days, E-Mail, and if possible, View and/or Edit word documents and things like that.
Here's my question. I'm torn between mixed reviews on these select phones, The Blackjack, the Blackberry 8800(which I like minus the no-camera(not a huge deal for me) and the new 4-way trackball(mixed reviews on usability) and any of the Treo's. Basically, How is Cingular Service in and around boston, and overall? And anybody have recommendations on what phone I should look more closely at? Feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks for your time, and sorry so long.
Well it cost 175 to terminate the plan... well if u have the money to do that then u can add a little more and get a good PDA., not from Verizon, lots of people are selling bran new phones on ebay and craigslist. I have Verizon and ive compared service with every provider many times, I always came out on top. Why would you waist money to go into poor service?? i dont know, this is just my opinion but Cingular is also a very good company id say if not verizon then cingular those two are the best and almost the same.., hope i was helpfull, ![]()
Hey BoSox, I wouldn't be all that reluctant to switch to Cingular. I'm a Boston College student and I find the service in Boston to be among the best in comparison to the other carriers. I own the Samsung Blackjack and I find the phone to be generally good for what you are looking for. The only thing that will be kind of shakey is the Editing word documents part, since the phone runs on Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone edition which only allows you to view the documents. On another note, the Blackjack is recently much cheaper than the other smartphones so this would be appealing to a College Student type. I wouldn't go with the Blackberry 8800 considering the Blackjack killed it in the Prizefight hosted by Cnet. I had a Treo 650 before the Blackjack. I can't say anything bad about the Treo line, the phones are quite good, but I do like the Blackjack better. I find the interface and design much more appealing in my opinion. So I would say to look more closely at the Blackjack and if you don't like it then the Treo 680 or 750.
ps... Sux to BU ![]()
You need a better phone, not different service. Get a smartphone and then consider data speeds. For the need you expressed, having slow data speeds is the kiss of death and nothing is faster than Verizon or Sprint. Cingular data is s l o w.
Dropped calls with Cingular is only half the story. Getting the connection in the first place is the problem. They fixed the dropped call but shifted the problem to the initial connection. In many places it works just fine but elsewhere, forget it.
Gte the Samsung i830 Global Phone from Verizon and you'll have everything you need in one small easy to use package.
There is far more to mobile phone service than just the phone. It's the service. Verizon is tops and they will fix any problem you have with their service and the phone. Like all companies they try to do this with the least amount of cost but compare that to what Cingular and the others do, hang you out to dry.
Ask for early upgrades, they take care of it. Mistake in shipping, a new one is sent out overnight.
Then look at data speeds. Cingular just doesn't have it. Verizon data is the best in the industry and their tech support is tops as well. I've had T-Mobile and Cingular and whenever you have a problem with their service, somehow it's always your fault.
I've been with Verizon since before they WERE Verizon! In my part of the country (North Carolina, previously NYC) they were BellSouth Mobile until about 1989, then rebranded. They have some of the best customer service stores, but IMHO, have always been one step behind in phone selection and quality until recently. However, two glaring omissions led me to switch. I live in a RURAL area, and even though service has grown immensely over the past few years, I STILL cannot call with Verizon from some places. Since the Cingular/ATT merger, a good friend with Cingular reguarly calls from our home, where we have NEVER had good service with Verizon. Likewise, our son has Sprint and T-Mobile with his job and neither of those phones get any service where we live, but Cingular does. That was my deciding factor. Almost everyone has the Smartphone selection of phones available now, and you can make your choice not based solely on network, but also on hardware selection. Don't forget that if you decide to get a NEW plan, check places like Amazon.com who have GREAT deals on new sign ups/. I hope this rather rambling post gave you something to think about when making your decision.
