How do I easily create a bootable USB HD with WinXP on it?

by Golem_one - 4/29/07 9:46 AM

I have two computers, a laptop and a desktop which can boot from USB and I have a spare 2.5" HD in a USB 2 case on which I would like to install WinXP and a web server and be able to boot from it. I had thought of using a USB 2 flash/thumb drive but I think that it would quickly become unuseable due to the potentially huge number of rewrites to it which would use up its limited rewrite capability. I have done a Google search and found many pages which give different ways to do this but they are quite complicated and many people who have tried have lots of difficulty and few have been successful. Has anyone successfully done this and would you please provide instructions too?

Microsoft doesn't supply XP in such form. Look up BARTPE on google to see how to do what you ask.

Also, did you read the STICKY about what this forum is for?

To: Not from Microsoft,

I read this forum's sticky but there's nothing that precludes anyone from asking a question like mine as you can see by reviewing the topics and their content posted in this forum. As well, in the header to the posting reply it has the following statement:

"Note: If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended."

Consequently, I don't think my question posted to this forum is inappropriate.

As well, I have looked at Bart PE and other potential methods to creating a bootable usb hard drive but, as I stated in the post you criticized, they are quite complicated and most people who have tried them have difficulties and most have been unsuccessful. I did try one method which involved using an HP utility and it resulted in causing my 2 1/2" usb hard drive to become invisible and I had to take the hard drive out of its case, connect it to the IDE cable inside the computer and reformat it. Now I am trying a method posted on Addonics' web site which used a DOS boot floppy. I hope that will work but I am not betting on it.

Have you checked the bios to see if it suports booting on usb.
if it did then mybe if you clone your c:drive, just with windows and no startup programs. Then reset bios to boot from a usd drive that may work, good luck with it
