As for text messaging on the timeline of technology, it shouldn't have come after the invention of cell phones. Even if you were kidnapped, it wouldn't do any good if you're tied up. Besides the fact that it cost more money than it’s worth, it’s just a portable instant messenger for people that can't stand to leave their PC/bedroom/dining room.
It does wonders for men that have a Pee-Wee Herman voice though.
I am 63 years old and I love text messaging. I keep in contact with my grandson that way. He is a text message junkie. I only do a few a month because I won't pay extra for it. I think the cell phone companies are ripping us off on cell phone charges and I'm not about to pay extra for text messaging per month. My company went up from 10 cents to 15 cents per message, so I don't mind spending a dollar to keep in touch with my grandson.
I wouldn't waste my time text messaging, but I'd accept messages from my husband and kids if they were included in my cell phone plan. It's easier to get a message saying "pick me up after school" or "I'll be home at 8" than to listen to a voice mail, and I won't answer my cell on the road because of the danger involved. I resent paying extra for text messages, so I've blocked my phone from receiving them. Wake up cell phone companies, and add a few free text messages to your plans!
My wife and I use text messages every day. I work at a place where I can't answer the phone all the time. So she will text me and I will text back when i can.We find it very helpful.
text messaging is an attempt by cell companies to bleed more money from their customers--totally unnecessary for 95% of the population. LEAVE A VOICE MAIL MESSAGE!!!!
Text messaging is a waste of my money. If I want to communicate with someone I use the telephone and voice mail or e-mail.
I don't have anything to say that can't wait until the person who needs to know it - can check e-mail or voice mail...or just talk to me.

If I did not have children, I probably would never text message. However, I have a child in high school, it's a great way to communicate with her during the day. Seeing students are unable to receive or send calls, she can text me between classes, during study, etc. It's a great tool!
I don't text or use my minutes. I use data mainly, and I usually IM people.
Thanks for changing the poll to include "I don't do no stinkin text messaging." I may need the feature sometime in the future, but not yet. The feature was used quite effectively in the Academy Award winning movie THE DEPARTED, but my need for that kind of clandestine communication is nillo.
I find it difficult to play with the keys to do texting. My wife's family is European, and they have been texting for years. They all love it, and they are proficient at it as well. ME, I'm about as nimble as a 747 in a nursey. It's not for me. I get it, but I suck at it. Give me a fast pipe on the Internet and I'm fine.
I wish I could do text msg as I hate the phone. I'm a 5 minute max guy. I don't like to jammer-jaw about nothing. I guess I'm an old school guy in a high tech world, but I love high tech gadgets... go figure. Call me Crusty.
I can talk faster than you can type.... and its free. Voicemail!!!
I recently looked at my cell phone bill and I had over 1200 sent and received text messages. I'm guessing I sent about 700 of those (since I tend to send more than I receive.
I specifically bought my new phone because of the Qwerty keyboard so I can text faster. What a shame.
I'm so far out of touch and over the hill it's actually funny! At my last employment (5 years ago) one woman's cell phone rang well over a dozen times a day... it was almost always one of her daughters. And I don't remember even ONCE that the call was about anything important.
I'm so puzzled about this. In my family we can go MONTHS without actually talking to one another, let alone emailing or writing a letter. We talk when we have something worth saying. We don't waste each other's time yakking about nothing like nattering children in a playground.
As far as "texting" (I guess we have another new word/verb in the English language - as if it isn't confusing enough) - I've never done it and have absolutely no need for it. I'm so happy to be retired frm the rat race. I feel so sorry for those trapped in it.
"Text" on, kids. It's your life and you get to spend it doing "whatever turns your crank" (that's an archaic expression spoken mostly by those who wear bifocals and use telephones).
I'm pro DJ Shortly after i took the time to master it I realized it's faults and limitations. True Communication can not be done this way.
no true feelings, expressions, or complete ideas and sentiments can be expressed in this impersonal, abbreviated manor, to say the least, I lost $1200. due to a miss under stood text message.
Here in Brazil text messages are so commom as they save time and money. Sure, the teens are the heavy-users but just about everyone here uses it. And i think it's great if you're at a soccer stadium or at a club and want to share something with your friends and family. For those who don't know it, Brazil is one of the hottest cell phone markets in the world, with diversified models and services.
