buddy do not give up. Vista is great!!! All you have to do is go to Microsoft and download little software programs for whatever your application needs are. Its not that hard. Good luck downloading. Bill
It is refreshing to hear someone so cheerful in this forum. For me, I got a lot more grey hairs since I bought my new Vista PC.
After investing a fortune on XP compatible peripherials & computer programs in the last few years, it is rather sad & frustrating to see my new Vista PC popping out fatal warnings when I tried to install them....in most cases, my new Vista computer simply refuses to run/install the origianl CD drivers & programs.
A few peripherials can be saved when the manufacturers are kind enough to post new Vista compatible drivers on their website (i.e. if the customer can afford or willing to waste hours & hours sitting in front of their PC downloading & installing them). But for me, some of my beloved programs & peripherials are already "death sentenced" by my new Vista PC...& had prematurely retired to the storage shed in my backyard. They will head for our local land-fills (still in good working condition) if I can not find the suitable Vista compatible download on the internet in the next few weeks.

DON'T haul your peripherals and programs to the local landfill. There are many places which can use your discards. Check with charities, schools, etc. before you get rid of them!
Hi,dr davis, could you list a few of the programs that wont work and who makes them, ill try to get some drivers for you.

Denni,
I'm sorry but I don't have any list of Vista-compatible or Vista-incompatible programs or drivers. The Microsoft website has a list of Vista-compatible programs, but I understand that it's far from complete.
My point was that good hardware and software need not be added to already overburdened landfills. Schools, senior citizens groups, Goodwill, and others may well be able to make use of these items.

The way to get your peripherals that worked in XP working is to install a second hard drive and install XP on that new hard drive. When you want to use those peripherals switch to the second hard drive. You can get deals on hard drives right now. Along with that hard drive, buy a new new edition of XP for a new computer, XP is selling at a reduced price right now. If this is challanging, step into a neighborhood computer shop and you will probably find a young guy who can get right on it and you'll have your computer back in a couple of hours. I did it and when I want to switch drives, I restart, push down on the F2 key on restart, and with a couple of steps change hard drives and when the computer restarts I can use my peripherals that I thought I would have to replace. I could not use iTunes to manage my iPod in Vista and my scanner was not supported by HP for use with Vista. I'm a gizzer and is not too confusing. CHFink
Open device manager, select the device that needs a driver and load the xp driver. Vista will accept xp drivers if you manually load them.
It's not Vista that bothers me, it's office 2007. Star Office is looking like an easier upgrade.
My co-worker just got back from a seminar for Microsoft, and actually the engineer made a great point. There is always an option of running windows XP for programs that don't work in Microsoft's Virutal PC 2007 which is a free download. I know that allot of people on here asking for advice are not the most technically advanced, but this option would enable you to run software that is neccessary and give you the ability to wait out some of the issues that companies are having with Vista. I personally beta tested Vista RC1 and I'm going to wait until the bugs get worked out, but if I was going to be running a new PC with Vista installed, I would defintely consider this as a option.
I UPGRADE THE VIDEO CARD TO 8800 SERIES 640MB; EVGA. BUT I HAVE BAD VIDEO OR THE LETTERS IS BLURRY. I CHANGE THE RESOLUTION BUT NOTHING. WHEN USE VISTA BUSS. IS GOOD WITH XP PRO HAVE PROBLEM. THE VIDEO CARD IS PCI-E

Your best bet is to break out of the M$ rut and switch to Linux, try Ubuntu. This is fast, free and does not have the restriction which Microsoft places on its software. Their business model has got to go! ;-( BB
To Frankling yes give vista a chance mybe microsoft will fix all the the things that are make people unhappy one day,its a few things I can run. If you can, do what I did I have 2 Hard drive when I get tiere of vista I just put my 2 hard drive back in, and I back to windows xp media center. Then you can try to figer out vista when your good and Ready.
I recently purchased a new Sony Vaio VGN-FE890. Excellent notebook with a great bang for your buck, but alas, it only ships with Vista. I figured I'd give it a shot (and I did mess with it for about 1 day), but I have many, many programs that I need to be able to use and I KNOW that some of them will not work under Vista and never will for various reasons. For this reason I ordered a second hard drive from a 3rd party with the intention of loading XP on it and keeping my Vista HD handy whenever I wanted to play with it or permanently start using it.
Of course I knew I was going to have my hands full trying to load XP on a laptop full of proprietary equipment, when Sony U.S. does not have XP drivers available. I was having a lot of trouble until I found out that Sony Europe DOES have XP drivers available for many of their VAIOs, not just the VGN-FE890, that only ship with Vista in the U.S.. The files are located on Sony's FTP site here: ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/Vaio/Original/
For those of you who either purchased or want to purchase a new VAIO and want to run XP on it instead of or in conjunction with Vista, you should be able to find XP drivers and utilities for ALL the devices on your laptop at this FTP site. There is one "drivers" ZIP file and one "utilities" ZIP file for each series VAIO, so you'll need two files for each laptop. Unfortunately there's nothing that tells you exactly which filename corresponds to which VAIO, but it's somewhat intuitive. For example, the VGN-FE890 series VAIO requires the FE3.ZIP files. You might be able to get some assistance on various Sony forums to help find the exact filename that you need.
FYI, I was able to get every device installed and working properly on my FE890 VAIO under XP, except the integrated Bluetooth and camera. The camera says it's installed properly but it just doesn't work, and the Bluetooth driver won't install properly. Others that have tried migrating their Vista VAIO to XP have complained about the same problem, so far with no resolution that I've found but I'm still hopeful. These aren't critical devices for me at this point so it's not the end of the world.
Hope this helps a few people!
Thanks for your help....i'm also taking an vaio fe890 back to xp....I can not get the two items installed....the items still remain as unknown devices....pci device and UGX any further instructions to resolve these unknown devices
I like you love the computer, but not the Vista. I too have everything working (as far as I can see up to this point), but not the Bluetooth or the built-in web cam. I do require both of these due to my extensive travelling and need for web conference calls. Have you found any recent fixes for these two items? Thanks for you initial help which I found when trying to load XP.
