AVG

Why? Uses fewer resources, and it's free.

How do you know

by LionsMike - 4/27/07 9:20 PM In reply to: AVG by mattumanu

I have heard this same statement from several people. Where do you go to find out that it uses resources. I have not seen one person capable of answering that question, and big deal if it uses resources, who cares as long as it does not effect the operation of the computer.
If your automobile could only get to 166 MPH in the half mile, would you throw it away and get one which would do 172 mph because it was so much better even though it did not have pasenger seats or brakes.
I have used Norton in at least one of my computers for years, and I have never seen anything to tell me that it uses any more resources than any other AV program. I did go to one computer that was running slow with Norton installed, but after uninstalling Norton it was still running slow. I added 64 Meg of ram to get it up to 128 Meg and that helped alot.

Which AV ?

by BobM1 - 11/22/07 1:50 AM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Avast Home Edition 4.7. Updates regularly (usually daily) I've used it now for 3 years and no problems. I tried AVG and Norton in the past but for a free AV, I would recommend this to anyone. I run XP Pro SP2.

Sophos

by Redstolly - 11/22/07 1:56 AM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I am a reseller for Sophos based in Abingdon UK, operates out of Vancouver, Boston and Sydney as well.

Unobtrusive AV with 24/7 telephone support by guys who know what they are doing. I become a reseller because I liked the software.

Sophos is reluctant to deal with the general public so minimum purchase is 5 licences.

Th bottom line for me is that it takes a third of the time to install compared with Norton and Macafee.

surprised nod32 is so low in the poll...

by coocooforcocoapuffs - 11/22/07 2:06 AM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

as it's really saved our butts in this virus-infested swamp we call south asia. it updates everyday and catches everything, although now that we have gone mac, there is no longer a need for such silliness.

I agree!

by morninglory - 11/23/07 8:20 AM In reply to: surprised nod32 is so low in the poll... by coocooforcocoapuffs

I tried the nod32 trial version and really liked it although, with my limited knowledge of 'net technology I didn't get all I could from it.
When the trial period was up I didn't have the $ to buy it so I switched to Avast. I am happy with it but would still like to try nod again.
I also could get CA free (I have roadrunner) but think I will stick with Avast for now. I am also VERY careful about opening my email. I am using the free version of Mailwasher and it's great!

Like my Norton

by SargeAF - 11/22/07 2:23 AM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have been using Norton now for 7 years, I did try McAfee and another one that I can not remember the name of, ended up with a bunch of viruses, a trojen, Tracking bugs, went back to my Norton and it cleaned the system. I also have the system works & Firewall on here as well, and all have served me well. They do sometimes cause the puter to slow but only when running checks, It does take some time to find the right settings, have to do a trial by error until you get it the way you want, but once you do it has worked flawlessly. I get daily checkups, weekly updates (unless a new trojen or worm shows up, then it is immediate). Yes Norton tech support does suck, but they have always solved the problem, but I have only used it 3 times in 7 years too so it is not an issue with me.
Not all the time is free always the best.
I have been always pleased with the service that my Norton has given me. There is some other things I do wish they would include in thier package though, but it is stuff I can live without.

Passing on experience.

by Bellerophen - 11/22/07 2:31 AM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hello, ...and how are you?
I began with Norton 2005, but when the time came to renew my subscription my financial circumstances had changed. Could I find good anti-virus protection for free, and fortunatly the answer is yes. I tried a few including AVG, and then I found the AOL Active Virus Shield powered by Kaspersky. This is quite simply the best free anti-virus protection currently available, and a true essential. The simple fact is that fortunatly you don't encounter a virus every day. However when the moment came, and I did. The Active Virus Shield performed perfectly it was delt with efficiently and no harm was done to my computer. I would just like to take this opportunity, and say thank you to Kaspersky. Very recently I came across an offer from Kaspersky. 50% off Kaspersky Internet Security 7. How could I resist, well I did'nt and is now installed in my computer.
Yours Bellerophen.

the best!

by astanga - 11/22/07 2:40 AM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

recent magazine surveys have rated Kaspersky as the best and most efficient protection. Refer to PC Pro especially. Norton came out surprisingly low in this one!

KASPERSKY

by alice_b0wie - 11/23/07 7:27 AM In reply to: the best! by astanga

i've tried all of them. i took them to the bowels of infection. i threw everything at them. i tested usability and convenience. i came up with this, for free anti virus AviraPersonal beat them all out, the worst free one was AVG. AS WITH FREE THINGS, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! i bought kaspersky internet security. it caught everything. it runs scans and i can't tell it's running. i can't tell its running when i surf. i hate anything that slows down surfing or has too many security pop ups. this works exactly how i want it to work. the worst i tried out of all the anti virus programs was norton 360. this has got to be the worst piece of junk ever made. it runs like pre-beta, lol

NOD32 #1

by erniemink - 11/22/07 2:53 AM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have used many other antivirus programs and tested them and so far NOD 32 is the best! More secure and not a resource hog:)
