I have 2 quick questions. First time transfering video,
1. What are a few good choices for "amature" video editing software?
2. My Panasonic PV-GS85 didn't come with a fire wire cable, it came with a DV input on the camera and a cable with a dv input on one end and a usb cable on the other end. Is this OK to transfer my video to PC with or do I need a fire wire card and cable?
Thanks in advance.
Sorry I can't help with question 2. However, for Question 1 I recommend you take a look at Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0. I am stilling waiting for my camcorder to arrive but have been playing with Premiere Elements and find it quite easy to use. Will you or I out grow it? Hard to say, but it looks like a great place to start and the price is good.

The cable you have is most likely a usb cable. The small end that you think is firewire (DV) is mini-usb. They look a lot alike, but you may tear up your camera trying to stick it in the firewire(DV) port. Google mini-usb cable and also 4pin to 6pin firewire cable and look at some pictures.
The USB is great for transferring still pictures from the memory card to your computer. But it is only USB 1.1 instead of the faster USB 2.0, so you'll get much better video if you invest in a firewire card for your computer (if it doesn't have one) and a firewire cable for transferring the video to the computer.
Excellent reply!
Thats exactly what I have, there are 2 places behind the battery, one for USB and one for firewire (DV). So I figured out that my other computer (laptop) has a IEEE card in it. So all I need now is the DV to DV cable.
Still looking for editing software recomendations!
Believe or not I ve been having the same issue with my camcorder in terms of what editing software. I currently have a MG505 JVC hard drive camcorder. Editing the files via USB file download. I am also transferring old mini dv tapes using firewire.
4 ease of use try Power producer/director as this gives the best resolution, it came bundled with the camcorder. I have two other softwares which I have tried, Nero premium and MOVAVI. The former has good product support but the transfer to DVD is not as good in MPEG2 (cf to Power producer). It supports HD transfer as well. The MOVAVI is good and has video editing functions that are well easy to use. I love its software for enhancing video quality can be downloaded separately. It has split screen for direct comparison.
For the best effect transfer your video using the best uncompressed form either MPEG2 DVD quality or AVI. Then touch up the clips with an enhancing software like MOVAVI and add effects like text, voice over and finally transfer to DVD.
What is your price range and how serious are you about video. also whatever you do dont get anything from cyberlink
