Cleaning TMP files and other slow downers

by Catmoves - 1/26/07 10:27 AM In reply to: How to clean unwanted files from hard drive....LastGood.tmp by anituh

I found and have been using a program designed for XP installations that finds the *.bak, *.~* and *.tmp files and erases them. It's called Drive Clean Up Wizard and it works great. It's a freebie and you can get it at http://www.thejackol.com

Hi,

I was cleaning out my old files the way you sugested. Posted by: Grif Thomas Posted on: 05/11/2004 12:16 PM when I got to the part of temp internet files. I ran across a problem I have win 2000. Under local setting/ user name I found the folders you said but under the Temp Int were subfolders called ContentIE5, OLK51C3 and OLKA1EO when I went to delete the files in them I got a warning about deleting a file may cause problems with windows. Are these files safe to delete?

Roc, OLK Files Are Interesting...

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 5/18/04 12:39 PM In reply to: Re:How To Clean Unwanted Files From The Hard Drive by roc045

For some reason, and I've only seen it on Windows 2000, the Microsoft Outlook program will start saving it's messages to the "Temp" OLK folder. It becomes the "default" save location for messages when you choose "Save As" under the "File" menu. It's not supposed to be that way, and the user needs to pay attention that saved messages are NOT placed there, but it does happen. Open those folders and make sure you have backups of all the messages that are in those OLK folders, then you can safely delete those folders.

We've got a couple of Win2000 machines in our agency which did the same thing. Once the messages were removed from the OLK folders and saved elsewhere, then the folders were removed safely.

Hope this helps.

I use the Drafts folder as a 'holding tank'. Click Forward as if you are going to send the message to someone. Make all the editing changes and notations you wish. (See below.) Then click File and Close and answer Yes. It goes to the Drafts folders. Use Subject line to enter the nature of the message. For example, I use: Jokes, Health, Animations, Cartoons, etc. These are items I want to hold for later use, filing or reference. And you can sort by Subject. You can also use the To: box for further sorting needs. I use it to indicate the message source.

Is there a way to change the default Save As location from the OLK folder to another folder in Outlook 2000?

jsergienko , I've Found...

....that after you delete the OLK folders, then a new default location is created. Normally, that default is the "My Documents" folder on your desktop. If you would like to save a particular message to a different folder within Outlook, you should be able to "move" the message to a different folder by clicking on "File" in the upper left of the opened message window, choose "Move to folder", then save it to the Outlook folder of your choice.

Hope this helps.

(NT) OLK files: how do you locate and open them? WIN XP

Dk, Finding OLK Files and Folders

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 1/25/05 10:09 AM In reply to: (NT) OLK files: how do you locate and open them? WIN XP by dkkeller

On Windows XP, IF they are there, the OLK folder should reside at the path below:

C\Documents and Settings\Yourusername\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files.

Occasionally, it the OLK folder may be placed in the "C\Windows\Temp\Temporary Internet Files" folder.

Opening the folder simply means navigating to the folder in Windows Explorer, then double clicking on the folder, then the message. The message, which was saved in the basic Outlook "message" format, should open normally using Microsoft Outlook.

And remember, not all computer's create the default "OLK" folders..In fact, most do not...so you may not be able to find any on the computer. IF Outlook on your computer IS saving it's message in an OLK folder, you should be able to determine the OLK folder's location by attempting to save a message and when the "Save In" box loads, click on the "drop down arrow" in the "Save In" line. You should be able to determine it's location by "back tracking" using that drop down menu.

Hope this helps.

XP and OLK folder do NOT show up in windows explorer

by c4poa - 4/20/07 11:46 AM In reply to: Dk, Finding OLK Files and Folders by Grif Thomas Moderator

I know the OLK2 folder is alive and well as if I open a Word document that is attached to an email message in Outlook, I can do a SaveAs or a File, Open and it defaults to that location and shows me the list of files already in that folder. Someone has to know how to make Windows Explorer show me this folder. I can work around it but it seems very silly that I should have to do so. Thanks in advance!

Re: showing folders in Explorer

Try setting some options in Config Panel>Folder options or Tools>Folder options in Explorer. Go to the View tab.

Relevant options:
- Show the contents of system folders (check).
- Hide hidden files and folders (uncheck).

Hope this helps.

Tried those things and none seemed to help

by c4poa - 4/20/07 2:11 PM In reply to: Re: showing folders in Explorer by Kees Bakker Moderator

What I did find on another site is that it's designed to be a hidden folder and the only way to get to it supposedly is if you know the OLK folders exact name, you can type it in the address line and then it will show itself and this does seem to work. At least it's something I guess.

It Shouldn't Be That Difficult

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 4/20/07 5:19 PM In reply to: Tried those things and none seemed to help by c4poa

As Kees described, make sure to show all hidden files, all system files, etc. in the "Folder Options" section. Once that's done, first look in the two locations I described.. If not there, you can simply click on Start-Search, and type: "OLK" in the search engine.. They should then turn up..

In addition, not all computers have an OLK folder.. Although the machine may first allow you to "save" a file to the folder, if you choose not to, it may not ask you again.. I don't have an OLK on any of my computers.

Hope this helps.

Try this

by raycx9x - 6/27/07 5:50 AM In reply to: Tried those things and none seemed to help by c4poa

Start>Run>%TEMP%
This will open the Secure hidden folder you are looking for so that youo can delete what you would like to - unfortunately somtimes it opens the one under C:\Windows\... which is not much help if the OLK is under ~\locals~

Click folder button to expand tree and then find the Temp internet folder....OLK folders should NOW be visible... Good LUCK

OLK folder not showing in windows explorer

by lisahorney - 7/20/07 6:50 AM In reply to: XP and OLK folder do NOT show up in windows explorer by c4poa

I am having the same problem at my company too. I'm not sure when it started - I believe we used to be able to see the OLK folder and delete the contents. We rolled out new computers last fall and I think it could hzve been since then or since some update that may have affected it. We recently found that this folder does exist, but opening attachment, clicking save as, getting the name of the OLK folder and pasting in the path after the temporary internet files\OLKxxxx. The directory then appears. Problem is I am starting to find users with thousands of these files and the only way to delete them is to manually put the OLK folder name in the path. I can't find a way to make this folder show up so that users can see it and keep it cleaned out. It is starting to cause problems

OLK Folder Not Showing!

by lisahorney - 7/20/07 7:27 AM In reply to: XP and OLK folder do NOT show up in windows explorer by c4poa

I agree - I am having the same exact problem and I need to find out why this folder won't show in the temporary internet files directory- nor does it delete when deleting temps. Therefore, my users OLK directory is now growing to a very large size that is causing some real quirky problems. I know how to find it and delete the contents, but doing it the long way it way too much to ask our user community to do. We are trying to script something to put in our login script.
