Just wondered if anyone is experiencing or has experienced probs when playing audio on this machine. Just got mine and all I seem to get is underpinning the music are pops and crackles. Any ideas as to how to rectify would be great. Tried Dell...and tried Dell and tried Dell and so on and so on! I'm sure you get my drift? Well they did kindly send a replacement....and guess what...yep the fault is still ticking away in the background on this fella too.
I followed instructions to play with the dram and some other bits n bobs they wanted me to self destruct with...well that's what it seemed like per the instructions. But alas the prob still persists even on this new machine.
Thanks world, I'm waiting on your replies.
You need to try another model.
I wonder if you got the 2GB RAM and all that is needed for Vista to run unencumbered but a repeating issue is Windows Media Player 11. Sorry, it's not funny to run Winamp and the issue vanishes. There is no cure for that one yet.

Thanks for the reply. The specs I have for it are as follows.
Processor AMD Turion 64 x 2 Mobile Technology TL-50 @ 1.60 GHz
RAM 894 MB

Check the Vista forum to read repeated nods to over 1GB (2GB!)
You'll want to try Winamp to see if it's the usual WMP 11 gaffe. No fix yet from my experience.

Ran a DVD on it and it seemed fine. Only needed the machine for basic stuff like WP and building reports to be honest.
I am beginning to wonder if it is WMP Eleven then!
Thank you again.

I had this problem really bad with an early version of Itunes 7 so try using Itunes or Winamp or Musicmatch Jukebox and if all of those have the crackling then I don't know why it would be doing this, although from my understanding so far Vista is not a very audio friendly OS
Thanks for that snippet of advice, I will get on to it later today and see what happens, I'll more than likely post up on here if, there's a rectification from using any of the suggested alternatives and conversely, if not.
Really helpful, much appreciated

It's also driving me nuts... I don't think there is a fix... I'm about to buy an external sound card for it:
http://www.x-fi.com/products/xmod/
Thats a little on the steep side ($79 - on sale for $59) but sound is important to me. You can also get cheap USB sound cards.
Also, about the RAM... it has a full gig of RAM but part of that is being used for the graphics card... it barrows some. Kinda sucks.
After explaining to Dell that I don't hold a Masters in IT and that the normal Techno waffle they spew at me to rectify problems...mean nothing to me. They have now sent me this.
They reckon that there is a patch to stop our sounds cards stuttering and f**ting along the route.
THIS IS THE REPLY TO ME SAYING I WANT TO RETURN MY INSPIRON 1501.
Hi Mr Andrews
I have been checking on what we could do about the audio issue in Vista. This is a known issue and as the audio drivers are not compatible with Vista,
Can we try following steps:
Microsoft has released a patch:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929685/en-us
Can you also tell me how is the Windows Log on music?it is also cracked and choppy?
Do you face the audio issue only in Media Player?
In that case follow these:
Control panel-> Sound-> Speaker Properties->Enhancements->Disable all Enhancements
In Media Player, click the down arrow under Now Playing and go to Enhancements.
Click on Cross fading and Auto Volume Leveling.
At the bottom of the Media Player, you should see that Cross fading and Auto Volume Leveling adjustments are showing.
Make sure that Cross fading is off and Auto Volume Leveling is off.
In windows Media Player, hit ALT and go to TOOLS and the OPTIONS. Go to the Performance tab and under Network Buffering choose Buffer and change it to 1 second of content
If the above doesn't work out then we can also go ahead and download another set of audio drivers which I would let you know later.
I understand that you may not want to try these steps, but please try them because this is a known issue with vista and we have tried them for many Vista laptops and that's worked out. I would appreciate if you could perform the above steps.
I have tried my level best to simplify the steps. In case if you are not able to do them do mail me back and i shall guide you in performing the above steps.
THIS IS ME AGAIN......I THINK
I hope this helps you and anyone else that cares to read this. I haven't tried it yet but I am going to later.
Thanks everyone, I'll keep you updated as this progresses
I can now report that this fix works just follow the instructions with reference to changing the settings in WMP and presto no cracks no pops no stutters. SORTED.
Hope this helps.
