I'll talk about Media Center in the new Vista, as well as touch on the old media center. And I'll make brief mention of Media Center alternatives like Sage and MythTV.

How do I Record TV with Windows Media Center For Windows Vista Home Premium? I've got just a normal Directv box and want to record shows. I don't have HD or DVR. How do I do that? How reliable is Windows Media Center for Windows Vista Home Premium?
Hi Tom,
I heard that I can play video on my Xbox 360 if my computer has media center, so do you know how that works?
How can I setup the connection between the Media Center PC and the Xbox 360? What Media Center version does it has to be? I'm guessing I should buy Vista with Media Center instead of using it with the XP and having to buy Vista later...
As you see my main concern here is using my Xbox 360 to play video and audio that is on my PC. Is there anything else I could to with it?
Thanks a lot ![]()
I did a video showing how to connect Xbox 360 to Windows XP

You basically download Zune onto XP.
Fore Windows Vista or an earlier version of Windows with Media Center, you download the media extender software from Microsoft, or you can do it with Zune too.
i have a media centre pc running windows xp and a xbox 360 (core) which has no hard drive. i was thinking to connect both of them so that i could view picture and videos from my pc to my TV. so my question is do i need a hard drive for this function to work?
I bought the Dlink DSM-320 and while it did fine on audio content Dlink failed to tell what encoding was needed for video files. They also didn't provide software to encode it for that unit.
I've tried untold encodings such anything that Virtual Dub would make, TMPGenc, DivX (all) and flat MPEG-1 from my VCD that plays on most DVD players. There were varying degrees of success but eventually the unit would screw up the playback and who wants their movie to screw up every 10 minutes?
This is not a plea for help but do tell that not all units are ready for sale.
-> Here's hoping the Apple TV does better.

are there VCRs with wi-fi, that can connect to computers?
this is just what i need, but VCRs and media centers are alien words in Brazil... (not that much now, but two years ago, you would not hear it ever from someone not techie!)
VCRs with Wi-Fi. I've never heard of that, but I'll look.
Hey Tom,
I was wondering if you would be able to give us a little bit of insight into open source alternatives such as MythTV or Freevo. I was also wondering if you could get into the basic system specs for such a system.
Thanks. Love the show.
How is the media center functionality in Windows Vista different from Windows XP?
Is it too soon to begin judging Apple TV?
I've got a really ragtag collection of video, audio & other mediafiles (.pdf & photos) in various formats spread over a rat's nest of old gear lashed together into a peer network.
I'd love nothing more than to hide this crap in a backroom & have a nice tidy device to access it all, in a room where guests & company would not have to know what a kludger I am. ![]()
Has CNet or anyone compliled a grid of just what formats various contender devices can handle?
Is there any advantage to 802.11a as a standard for shortrange wireless, since it occupies a less-crowded slice of spectrum?
There is also the free software Media Portal. This is a good Media Center Program, that looks and acts like Microsofts Media Center!

I, sadly, have Vista. . . It comes with "Windows Media Center" instead of Mediaplayer -- I prefer the interface/functionality of the older program, but I'm not allowed to install it onto my computer because Media Center is deemed a newer version. . .
How can I remove Media Center, please, so that I may go grab the latest Mediaplayer?
Would you mind mentioning Xbox Media Center for original modded xboxes? It's a fantastic media player, built by the community. It supports every codec known to mankind, has great menu and playback UI's, and tons of networking features.
Also- I think there's an Ubuntu MythTV disk out there too. And what about Cable Card support? I remember hearing back on BOL that they were going to require that every single hardware setup be tested if you put a cable card in it.
Not that this all matters anyway, since it's all a simulation.
I just wanted to know if you can watch tv and surf the internet at the same time like i PIP or Split screen function i would appreciate i would could answer my question thank you.
