I hope this is the right forum to ask this question. I am looking for a new anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-rootkits, anti-trojan horses protector. I have Windows XP, and I have 1 gb of ram, so no worries there. I have read mixed reviews for:
Norton SystemWorks Standard Edition
Norton 360: All-In-One Security
McAfee Total Protection 07
Windows Live OneCare 1.5
Norton Antivirus 2007
Now, I download a lot of torrents, so I need some good protection, something very reliable. I would prefer not to download anything from here (spyware doctor, avg etc).
What should I use?
The answer is not so simple and can upset some. The problem is there is no Magic Shield product that will guard against all products and what the user might do. The owner is a critical component in protecting the PC and Windows. If the owner opens all emails and runs all attachments then it's clear to most that no software exists today that would protect against this.
The sticky in the noted forum has that forums most common protection software. But it only works if the owner learns a little more.
Today I'm installing, using Free AVG AntiVirus, Free AVG AntiSpyware, ZoneAlarm and do not use Internet Explorer except for Windows Update. I also have the PREVIEW turned off in the email client since that can be exploited. My email is filtered with POPFILE.
"Now, I download a lot of torrents"
All bets are off since those can contain threats that are just minutes old. Sounds like this owner needs to crash and burn a few times.

I use Avira Antivir Personal Edition which is free, Zonealarm as my firewall (also free) and Spybot S & D for spyware etc. This has been a pretty good setup for me for a long time now and I use Bittorrent too and sofar no problems with viruses etc. I use mostly use G-Mail for emails so I don't worry about email clients. If you don't mind spending some money, both Avira and Zonelabs have pretty good Internet Suites with antivirus, firewall, and anti-spyware software all in one.
Do all of these run in system tray hogging up memory?
There is no loss, actually a lot less loss than if you had Norton. As lony as you have at least 512 mgbs of ram you will be fine.
