What do I need to purchase to upgrade to 64-bit?

by phendrics - 4/13/07 12:56 PM

Hi,

I recently bought a Dell laptop running XP Media Center Edition, and it came with an Express upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit). When the upgrade DVD came, I installed Vista, and am enjoying it.

However, I have a question. If / when I want to install the 64-bit version of Vista (I'll want at least Home Premium), what do I need to purchase? Can I get just an upgrade DVD? Can I download the upgrade from Microsoft? Do I have to purchase a full retail copy and install from scratch? I'm a university student, so I'm guessing they'll have copies of Vista at a student discount, but I don't want to spend more than I have to, when the time comes.

Thanks,
Phillip

PS - I'm an engineering student running lots of Matlab programs. Do I even need the 64-bit version?

That's a no-go

Is this the part of the page you were referencing?

"64-bit DVD

If you bought Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, or Business as a retail, packaged product, and you would like a DVD of 64-bit software media to install on your PC, please choose your language:

[dropdown box allowing me to choose my language...]

Note: 64-bit media is included in the box with Windows Vista Ultimate."

If so, that's a no-go. Note that it specifically specifies that your version of Vista must be a retail, packaged product. An express upgrade from Dell is not a retail product.

I saw that page already, followed the link, but they wouldn't take my product code, probably for the reason I listed above.
