I wish I could figure out how to use the "automatic back-up" my new HP w/Vista has built in so I don't have to remember to actually back things up to a CD or DVD every month or so.
New PC's these days don't come with ANY brochures that 'old' pc's used to come with that explained everything that you wanted to know about everything in your PC.
They say it's to save $$ on printing costs but thats just a bunch of crap. When you sell millions of computers, the cost of printing up brochures cost pennies per PC.
It's all "built in" they say but finding it requires a call to their help center to guide you through the gamut of stuff they loaded on the PC.
That's my rant for the day.
Since I run Projects I understand how far my OS will go(3-Months)MAX..or 3-DV Projects..maybe some 60GBs in files being edited or Directed..first thought is to always SAVE TO:external HDD..
..
as far as the DATA-side of my OS..I moved onto a KVM-switch..
useing two PCs..
this allows my Project PC to remain more stable(not venturing)onto the Internet(Updates only)..
My Internet PC(DE051)by DELL runs the show..it really has the job of saving the Self-build/its a defence..not a BackUP..
..
Since I do Video Files I need every available-->>MB..no room for BackUP DATA..I think its a better move to just run for a time/complete some things and Re-Install the OS..
Usually some of my Component ICONS begin to show up in places they should NOT..the PC is kinda' OK..I do know how to push it a little bit-farther down the line..and the ARCHIVES really allow for some RISK..considering the HOBBY-aspect..
..
I think I have heard the result/Mirror..
I usually consider the result/simplicity..
..
I do lose 3-days on the re-install..
But the results are 100%--every time..for video..that's the way to do DVD..
..
I also have learned lots because I constantly RUN this way..
My PC install systems get read every three months..if you consider 5+ years of Desktop../
I have read just about every Dialog BOX Windows uses..and re-configured every CheckBOX..
..
Maybe things might change if I learn to place my PCs on a Networking schedule..DATA BackUP..might be conmsidered for simplicity there.
I haven't backed up in, say, 10 years or more. !! I'm very fortunate I haven't had any catastrophes yet.
I need to find out a good way to backup, though.
I should probably start by doing a complete hard drive mirror backup. (Then, I should redo it every several months, or something like that.)
And, how about a frequent (like a few times a week, or daily) incremental backup?
Now, for one of the major problems I've been having for backups...
What media do I put it on? I'd like to fit the data from ALL my hard drives (80GB, 200GB, 250GB, and possibly a 500GB or so in the near future) on 1 piece of media, or 2 if absolutely necessary. I also want it to be significantly cheaper per gigabyte than the hard drive. I remember something like 15 years ago or so, something like a 80MB hard drive was $250, whereas a 200GB tape drive cartridge was like $50, or some ratio like that. (I can't remember the exact prices.)
My policy for any data storage on my computer is basically that at least 90% of the cost of such data storage goes toward normal storage, not backup. (external flash media and optical media, like DVDs and CDs, aren't included in that ratio.)
So is there some media I could use to backup onto, or do I need to rethink my philosophy that was, in part, developed 10-15 years ago?
I used to backup my computer occassionally, but now I have installed "Windows Live One Care" (trial version) which will not let me back up my system. Do you have any answers as to why I can not do this?
Yes, I use Apricorn EZ-GIG II. This is a really wonderful program. I recently had to reformat my hard drive and restoring info was so easy because I took a "snapshot" of my hard drive before wiping and saved it to my USB drive. Invaluable.
Yes- I use Acronis True Image (great software) to make weekly backups of the computers on my network to a Linkstation network drive (great hardware). A month ago my laptop died and I had fortunately done the last incremental backup several hours prior, in the middle of the night, and lost ZERO data, including emails. A friend of mine had his laptop, with ALL of his own business's info, stolen, and was up the proverbial creek. Backing-up is NOT an option. Think of it as wearing a seat-belt in a sports car.
I use windows backup utility to save my important data to my second hard drive on a daily basis. I do this with all three of my PC's. I also have copies of my important data on each PC; sort of a redundant backup just in case.
Hello i'm living in Belgium ,and I make every 2 weeks a backup ( Image )of my entire PC with 2 build in HDD ,and I make the Image on a extended HDD ,with this fantastic tool " NORTON GHOST 9.0 " ,and it works very very good .I can even startup from scratch .And I planned between this 2 weeks incrementele backup tasks .I think that I have use " RESTORE " 15 times since I have these fantastic tool without no data loss .
Yes i do a complete hard drive backup about once a month using Trueimage. This has worked flawless for me for over 2 years.
I use a 300 GB Seagate B/U drive with Bounceback Pro software.
Also use a 200 GB internal B/U drive for my "D" data drive files, that way I have 2 copys of important files. Business & Financial files are auto-Backed up every day. I use Paragon Drive Backup 8.5 for cloning to DVD's for a Disk Image to store off-site. This is done monthly.
Found out the "hard way" back in the day about not having back-ups.
No, because I do not know how, but I want to learn.
It's easy.
Step 1- buy a USB external hard drive (simple) or a network drive (more complicated).
Step 2- buy a good backup software package- like Acronis True Image.
Step 3- Hook up the drive to your computer, then install the software and follow the directions to make a backup.
The first time you have a hard disk problem on your computer you'll be grateful you did it!
Cheers!
It would be interesting to hear people's experiences of actually putting their back-up methods to the test. How easy or difficult was it to restore your system or recover your data? Just a thought...
Shortly after beginning to use True Image I had a problem with my laptop. I did a restore- smooth as silk. It took awhile but at the end everything was back to normal. That made me a believer!
I constantly backup my data since i lost my HD with all my information, i lost pictures, documents and all sort of things.
My fraind recommended me to use this product and it works like charm.
i recommend it too...
