does Smoothwall Express replace a software firewall

by 3151jeff - 4/6/07 1:49 AM

I have read the information on the Smoothwall site and it still is not clear to me if this will replace a software firewall. I found it is as good or better than a router hardware firewall in the information but it never really comes right out and says what it protects against and equal to software wise. Can someone clarify this for me?
Thanks

I believe it is NAT firewall not the common firewall software but you might want to ask in their forum:

No. Here's why.

While it does what it does, it won't stop an infection/attack that started inside your LAN.

how could an infection occur inside my lan?

Sorry for being dense but I am not sure what you mean.
Do you mean if I allow an infection in by poor surfing methods?
I am aware that this Smoothwall would not check outgoing requests but is it as effective with the incoming

Dumb things.

Computers are dumb things that do what we ask. If you carried in a document with a pest then that's jumped over the firewall and a fine example of infection from inside.

I'm sorry you didn't grasp that each (Windows) machine must have a firewall. Some OSes are better about this such as Linux and MacOSX but I take it your system is Windows so each and every machine must be firewalled from internal as well as external attacks.

-> There was another member asking is they didn't need an antivirus since the server had it. SAME ISSUE.

Smoothie

Smoothwall is a superior "hardware" firewall in terms of keeping your system from being broken into from the outside by hackers. And it has a lot of advanced features. But pure firewall products are not anti-virus, anti-malware and you should provide those separately. In fact, I believe that a software firewall in addition to a Smoothie is an excellent idea. Zone Alarm type walls also monitor attempts from programs on your machine to get out and "call home", whether they are potentially harmless program updates or a bot trying to infect everything else it can reach. More is usually better.
